Hey Ladies, Jewell here!

First I'd like to apologize for not being on here for the past few weeks. First week my husband was on vaca and he was hoggin' the computer. Then this past weekend I damaged my back. Hahaha, saddly I was putting a frying pan in my dishwasher when the next thing I heard was a loud CRACK and my legs went out. I ended up going to the ER Sunday Evening/Monday Morning because my back and hips were killing me. After being in the ER for a total of 4 1/2 hrs I was told I have a bulging disc on my L5 which is right before my tailbone. I'm feeling a little bit better now with the muscle relaxers and and noninflammatory.

Anyways, my nurse and dr. told me I needed to strengthen my core muscles which will in the end help with my back. I was wondering if you ladies had any exercises that you would like to recommend or anything that could help me get those muscles in better shape.

Thanks!!

I have a similar problem, when I was in a car accident when I was young, I really injured my lower back. I periodically have pain, where it feels like I lose the feeling entirely in my left leg, and it just gives out.

I don't workout as much as I should, but if you have lower back injuries STAY AWAY from crunches/sit-ups. It's the most stressful way (if you have back problems) to strengthen your core.

What I do is the following: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz0oFaVGuh4

I hold it for 30 - 45 seconds, and I repeat that for 5 - 10 minutes. It does work, quite well... but of course, with any exercise -- verify with your doctor/specialist first if they will be safe for you. :)

Horseback riding & ballet are also both amazing ways to strengthen your core and to help your hips, thighs, etc.

holding plank is great for core! i recommend yoga or pilates- but i strongly believe that with either of these it's important to start in a studio that teaches so you can learn the poses properly.
if a studio isn't possible and you wanna try- the best videos for yoga i've found are http://www.yogaglo.com for $18 a month you get unlimited access, the teachers are quality, and there are great beginner classes and workshops to explain how to start a practice (i'm a yoga teacher too so i'm really particular about finding good teachers, and i LOVE yogaglo when i can't get to a studio). sorry for sounding like an ad.. i just really love the site.
good luck with whatever you decide!

Hey Jewell, i am a personal trainer off cam and would recommend yoga and some strength training. With your back the way it is right now, i would use your own body weight for right now. Maybe later use some actual weights. But yoga will really help you strengthen those core muscles.

Thank you SO much ladies. I will def. try these when I can hopefully next week. I got to have a follow-up with my regular doctor and hopefully can go from there!!!

You ladies Rock!

I was going to suggest yoga as well, especially to begin with as it is a little more gentle which would be good in your case. Once you are feeling stronger, you can always try pilates. In any case, speaking with your doctor who should be familiar with some basic types of exercise and asking him or her for advice is your best bet.

personally, I try to do 44 mins of yoga at least 3-4 times a week (heart problems tend to run in my family)

however... since I don't like videos or books, what I do is use the Wii
we have Wii Fit Plus that has an entire section of Yoga workout

:D

for anyone that hates exercising like me, I find Yoga is the best

I'd LOVE to get the Wii Fit. Sadly thought I've been too broke trying to catch up on all the doctor bills I got out on me right now. Good to know it's got Yoga on there. I'll have to see if it can't be rented or something!

Most game rental places won't rent stuff like Wii Fit because they can't rent out the hardware for it (the mat thing). But it's definitely worth it. The workouts are amazing, and it's a load of fun as well. :]

the only workout i get is going up and down stairs about 30 times a day maybe more. but since last July i have lost 100lbs. now i just need to figure out how to flatten this belly i got from having kids.

that's great vida. It takes a lot of determination to lose that much. The first thing about losing is eating clean and plenty of cardio and strengthing exercise. If you are doing crunches and stuff like that, get a stability ball. That also helps your core muscles and gives you a better range of motion.

I'm a fanatic for Bikram yoga. It is an intense form of yoga practiced in a heated room. I love it because I am not naturally flexible and it softens my bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, to where I can do things I never thought I would be able to in this lifetime. You don't even realize you are working your core throughout the 90 minutes. People ask me all the time how I get my abs and it's from Bikram just 2-3 times/week. It is extremely intense and some studios are pushier than others, but at mine, I go at my own pace and sit down if need be.

I've found bridge pose, planks, side planks, and leg raises to be really beneficial to strengthening my core. Also, when I'm doing cardio (running or walking) I try to concentrate on tightening my stomach muscles as much as possible to strengthen and tone. Also, I'm a sloucher (bad habit) so I try to work on my posture which in turn strengthens my core. Good Luck.

I use to have pretty vicious back pains when I was in high school, and found that propping the curve of my spine with a stability ball would help ease the pain and relax the muscles.
My mother swears by her inversion table, but you might just end up with bad ankles as well as a bad back :)
