Mass firings are currently underway for federal employees of probationary status, across over a dozen departments, with more reportedly to come. Owing to the sudden, chaotic way this has gone down, it's hard to pin down numbers, but it seems a minimum of tens of thousands of probationary employees have been let go, and some claims say possibly hundreds of thousands of people have been fired so far, or are going to be. For those who might be wondering, probationary employees are full time permanent employees who are still within a probationary period. For example, I work closely with employees of the National Park Service (one of the departments being affected, with 1,000 probationary employees having now been fired) and their probationary period is the first year of employment.
Here's a Reddit thread discussing it (while I'm not much a fan of Reddit discussion, there are a lot of source links providing info.)
If this was about government efficiency, and not causing total chaos, and doing as much damage to US public institutions as possible as quickly as possible, where is this zeal in cutting the fat from a near-trillion-dollar annual
PEACETIME military budget? Instead, almost half a billion dollars had been promised to Tesla to build armored Cybertrucks --
until the news got out, of course.
Never forget, in American Democracy, billions of dollars are more important than millions of lives.
