My husband is happy because his coworkers can stop bugging him about joining in on tiktok dances and maybe instead properly chart their patients

I find the extent of data harvesting that social media apps conduct scary.
The AG's office here in Australia banned the use of TikTok on Commonwealth-issued mobile devices in April 2023, after the federal government was cautioned over the compromised security potential of Chinese input.
Not sure that I'm any more comfortable with all my personal data and usage habits being held by Western entities.

Same. I considered it an annoyance when their main goal was thought to be advertising. Now that the major social media platforms are all tripping over themselves to worship the orange guy, the data mining is more scary that annoying.

If they’ll change their policies to make one political party happy, we should safely assume they’d share user data for purely political reasons, too.

The videos are a byproduct a method to get much information as possible and throwing ads to the user.
Videos is the wrapper...
Sell data = 💰
Sell ads = 💰💰💰

The only social media or type thing I use is Twitter. I've never used TikTok. I just don't like them all.
I only use Twitter because it was the one that used to be cooler to sex workers, and I only use it because it is for my business persona.

I use none of that stuff in my everyday life, under my real name. Not as much privacy concerns (although those do sound shitty) more I just don't like that stuff, because everyone else does.
If I need to talk to someone they have my phone number. I don't want to be showing everyone pictures of my life, because I'm private.
I only do it under "Eli" on Twitter to make money, for my family.
There's literally no other motivator, for me personally ,to use any of this stuff.

I watched an episode of Black Mirror that totally resonated with me, that was kind of related to facebook. I can't really put it all into words, why I don't like that stuff, but that episode kinda amplifies it and puts it forth in an extreme and dramatic way. Nosedive was the episode.

Tiktok I don't use purely because I hate shorts. I can't even stand 20 minute youtubes, because I never learn enough on any one subject. I need at least 45 minutes worth of depth on anything and everything, or I'll be left mentally asking way too many questions. Which will keep me up at night. I'm weird though, I do accept that.

None of that is entertainment to me, it's all Hell lol

But if TikTok keeps everyone else happy, motivated, and inspired, then I say no ban. I guess the positive has to outweigh the negative. I think it's cool how many people are incorporating little dances into their day. I believe that's super healthy. Not necessarily with the main motivation of showing to others, but to kind of let your soul free, and enjoy the music for the pure enjoyment, at regular intervals through your day. I think music, dance and song regularly, are super healthy and de-stressing for all of us.

TLDR; I don't care personally, for myself, but I do care if it takes away stress relief and enjoyment from the lives of others.

I feel like true, sustainable privacy is an endangered species these days (I don’t like that I believe this, but I do).

Regarding social media: I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. I hate the ads, the algorithms, and the way it makes people behave. On the other hand, I keep an account because I find some of the groups I’m in to be legit helpful and entertaining. If I could recreate that experience on a better platform with the same group of folks, I’d be out of FB entirely.

I use IG but I don’t post anything private. Threads is basically a slightly less bloated X, and I don’t mean that as a compliment.

I use X for work purposes only, and I don’t post (just viewing other posts). It’s infested with hate posts, advertising and engagement baiting. Plus the search sucks now, so it’s not even a useful tool for looking up things by topic anymore.

TikTok was never my thing, but I acknowledge it’s a big deal for many. Could the same experience be replicated over to YouTube shorts, perhaps? (Asking for those who are more familiar with TikTok than I.)

So Tiktok is monetized, right? Do these people get 1099s or is just free money? That might be part of the problem, too.

I like them...without them we would all still be putting up with Myspace.

I believe that I saw a mention of a 1099 from a tiktok shop once. What did you mean by free money?

No tax reporting.

Stripchat doesn't send me a 1099 but there's no escaping uncle sam...well....I suppose if I was braver I guess could try paying out to crypto and hiding it like that.
if you don't have a 1099, you don't have an EIN for Stripchat, so how does that work?

It's a statement of earnings we use to report our income to the IRS
It's a copy of the 1099 they send to the IRS. You don't technically need to receive it to pay taxes it's mostly just the us companies obligation to show the IRS and then you get a copy of it.

I suspect you're the only one doing that.

...wait you haven't been including foreign income when you pay taxes? Hopefully you won't get audited.

I don't have foreign income. I'm not stupid.
