I grew up on Ding Dongs--It was a time in grade school where the best part of the day was lunch time. I would take everything out of that brown paper bag and there would be the bologna sandwich on two pieces of wheat bread and a slice of cheap 'American' cellophane cheese (maybe a dab of mustard or ketchup on the sandwich), a little baggie of Doritos and a Ding Dong. My taste buds would explode with joy as I took off the top piece of white bread, dumped the Doritos and Ding Dong on the (sorta warm by now) bologna, and smushe--from top down--everthing together under those two pieces of wheat bread. It was as close to food ecstasy as I had ever experienced at that time--it was tough to stop doing it because it tasted so good! :nurse: The Ding Dong was a big big part of this and I will forever remember it fondly!

omg. I have to go to the store. I haven't had a peanut butter sandwich with Cheetos on it in decades..

Putting Doritos on a bologna sandwich is very common in jail.
Not so much the DingDong

I'm not in favor of prisoners having Doritos. Jail shouldn't be a pleasant experience. They should only be allowed plain Lay's.

Further connection between prisons and public schools.
You can knock public schools all you want, but let me tell you something; private schools aren't all they are cracked up to be.

In our little cafeteria we had Lance crackers (ok) and Oreos (also ok). Unfortunately, we also had Sno Balls. The fact they served a passable cheese pizza did not make up for it.

I would rather go to jail than try to choke down another Sno Ball.

The trick is to eat the marshmallow and the cake separately.

I fear I need to be educated in typical American snacks. Any suggestions of other nummy American goodies would be greatly appreciated. I thank you good sirs and good ladies in advance for your suggestions. :p

(or rather I'm going to Florida in November and want to eat loads of nummy American snacks.)

I'm sure many wish there were not so many plain Lay's in prison.

I highly recommend you look and see if there is a Donut Hole in your area when you visit Florida. They have chocolate creme filled donuts that are simply to die for. Omelets aren't bad either. But the real draw for me is their hash browns (though I'm not sure how you feel about potatoes, given the troubled history of Ireland-UK relations).

I'm sure the last thing you want to hear in prison is somebody behind you whispering "Hey there Sno Ball."

edit: tutorial on how to cut a Sno Ball in half

My favourite when I was in America was Koolaid, although in the last few years I've found places you can get that here now. I'd never heard of it before I went and ended up so addicted I was drinking gallons. It's a small miracle I had any teeth left at all when my year was over.

Used to be crazy about Koolaid. Then one day I tried Tang, and never looked back.

OMG I totally forgot about Tang, I love that too. I need to go and find somewhere to get that shipped to me now. I need it back in my life.

Edit to add Tang ordered
Be careful with that shit. Dangerous stuff.

I started off drinking it like you're supposed to. Soon that wasn't enough, and I was mixing it thicker and thicker. Eventually I found myself huddled in a corner eating it straight off a spoon. Yummy.

Reminds me of Fun Dip (formerly Lick 'm' Aid)

Kool-Aid Bursts are really good too! I like tropical punch.

Waffle House. Believe me, you'll find one anywhere you go in Florida...

Omg that's just made me soo hungry why do we not have stuf like this in the uk. We are soooo boring

I'm lucky enough to live where there's a Waffle House AND a Huddle House. 24 hour 'Any Meal, Any Time' deep fried greasy food to your hearts desire...or until it clogs and shuts down.

There's more than just these two pages.

Huddle House always left me flat. Mainly because their chicken sandwich consistently lacked flavor. Been a couple years since I ate there though, maybe I will go back and give the country fried steak a try.

American food always looks so good. I occasionally stream American TV shows and catch some of the adverts. 70% of them seem to be food-based and it all looks amazing. And so cheap. Over here, it's the equivalent of $10 for a Big Mac meal and $25 for a large Domino's pizza.

The government here subsidizes crops to farmers, $20 billion per year, of which the lions share is for corn production. So products made from corn are cheaper. High fructose corn syrup is a big one everyone knows about, it makes soda so cheap and is one of the main reasons for obesity. But there's a boat load of other products. Close to 95% of the items in a grocery store use corn in some fashion, right down to the ink used in printing the labels. Even the meat in the burgers; those cows are primarily fed a corn diet.

If the government would cease subsidizing the farmers, our food wouldn't be near so cheap.

The items in this list can each be derived from corn. Some of them can also be derived from other sources besides corn. For example, citric acid can be derived from fruit as well as corn.
