Hello, sexy men and women of ACF. I need some logistics help!

My current cam setup/sex cave is in the garage. I am using wireless Internet both for my laptop and my desktop. I use both computers when I cam. However, only the desktop is strictly necessary.

Our router/modem/magical Internet box is upstairs, in the room directly above the garage. In that room, there is no space to cam. I am happy with camming in the garage because it's a permanent space where I don't need to move all my equipment around in several trips just to hop on cam. In any other room of the house, I would have to do that.

I am trying to figure out how I could get a sexy magical Internet cable from the Internet box in the room above me to my camroom down here. The best solution I can think of right now is to just buy like a 100ft cable and let it wrap around half the house to get to me. It seems easy enough to pick it up when I'm done and put it back when I'm ready to cam again. I also highly doubt Mr. Evvie will let me drill a hole through the floor/ceiling.

Can anyone think of a better way to get the Internet plug-in thingajigger to the garage from upstairs?

Nope, this is pretty much what I do. There isnt a cable connection in my cam room..so my router is in my bedroom and I have a super long Ethernet cable coming into my bedroom. If you think if a better way let me know!!
What kind of cable do you use? Will any 'ol cheap one do?

My router is out in the living room and I have the wire from the router dragging across the kitchen floor into the bedroom, it's only like a 30 ft cable and it was the cheapest one at Walmart... Maybe you can string it up against the molding on the ceiling in some way or the floor boards so it doesn't look quite as obtrusive and paint it the color of your walls or something.

Yes, you can pull a cable. Any RJ45 CAT5 cable should work if you want to cover 100ft. Longer, you will need to look for a quality cable. CAT5 cables don't work over 100 meters or ~329ft.

Maybe I am missing something, but why don't you setup a wireless network?

I do have a wireless network :) but on SM, the only venue I have left to increase my ranking is to have a hard line for the Internet. I'm maxed out on everything else.

I do not know if they work, but you could try to use an outlet network thing. I just use a wireless network in my home.

I run the wire. I also leave it out, for now. Of course, ask Mr Evvie if he'd rather the wire running through the house or the hole in the floor/ceiling. His answer may surprise you.

And the ideal solution is to have a friend or relative who's handy in electrical or carpentry work who knows how to pull the cable down behind the walls and have a proper ethernet wall plug.

I have a pair of these at home, connecting router and bedroom. They about 20 meters apart and I can confirm they work very very well. I suggest that you try it, if you have the possibility to return it if it doesn't work for you. But for me it performs better and more reliably than wireless.

If you absolutely can't drill holes, then I have two suggestions.

Depending on the age of the house, it's possibe that the phone lines themselves are actually cat5 cables. In my old place, this was the case, and I was able to use the existing wiring to create a wired home network. It wasn't pretty, but it worked. This assumes that there's a phone outlet closer to you in the garage than just dragging a really long cat5 cable.

The other option you might look at is ethernet over powerline. It might (I stress might) give you better speeds depending on the quality of your wireless as well as the electrical wiring in your place. This may not really be any cheaper than be quite a buying a 100ft cat5, but it might be more convenient.

But, to be honest, I'd encourage you to consider drilling that hole. Depending on the layout, it might not be as hard as you think. I'd be happy to lend whatever advice I can, as would others, I'm sure.

I tried this and it sucked for streamate purposes - but ymmv...:/

Sometimes it does suck. Just because I was lucky with it, does not mean it works for everyone.

Just a few reasons why it might not work well enough are:

  • - The adapter was connected to a "filtered" power strip. The filters in the power strip see the flow of data as interference, and so they try to fight it

  • - There is some home automation system that sends commands over the power line, or some intercom system. The different signals from different systems might overlap each other and become unusable.

  • - The adapters are connected over two different phases in a 3-phase system, so they are practically disconnected from each other. (no wire running from one to the other)
3-phase systems are not very common in the part of the world where I live, but they are available, and maybe are more common in houses elsewhere.

  • - There are motors or dimmers in the house that send interferences down the power line, and this disturbs the data signal.

Bottom line, as Cammi said, ymmv. :)
That's why it's important that you make sure you can return the kit if it doesn't work well enough for you.

I've found these two guys on Amazon. Will they work out? I dunno about these things :crybaby:

http://www.amazon.com/RiteAV-Network-Et ... rnet+cable

http://www.amazon.com/100FT-CAT5e-PATCH ... rnet+cable

The reviews on both of those are bad, but they are cheap and maybe you will get lucky. I would try a dry run to see if the quality was good enough to work, before you make it permanent. A couple people said the cables were not made with twisted pairs, and that can increase the amount of noise in the line.

I'm having trouble finding cables that aren't all lies.

Is there a cold-air return (A/C duct used to return air to the furnace) or other type of vent between the two areas? Often rooms share a single cold-air return duct in the wall. If so, it might be just a matter of taking off the vent grille in each room and dropping the cable down the air duct.

This sounds like a good idea, but I'm looking around and I don't think the garage has an AC vent.

If its truly above you already, dropping it downstairs wouldn't be much hassle at all. Maybe even look in the local free shopper paper for guys that add outlets and run home wired networks. Many are quite reasonable. They already have the long flex bits for wall running and for maybe $50 they could set you up with an outlet in the wall. A friend had it done for only $35, but he already had the cat6 and the wall outlet.
As far as a long cable, be sure to check Ebay. I got good quality, 2-100' and a 50' for $28 including shipping. The local electronic parts house was asking $21 for the 50' alone.
