I just want to say that I LOVE that the biggest debate in this thread is over the terminology when it comes to agnosticism and atheism and not people attacking other's beliefs one way or the other. If I hadn't read it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it would be possible. Bring it in, everyone! :romance-grouphug:

I was only a little surprised. :-D

Generally there are three things you should never talk about in polite company, if you don't want craziness to ensue. Sex, politics and religion.

Sex? This being a forum that was mainly evolved around web models and cam sites, the sex was a given to be discussed and while not all sexual matters are agreed upon you could theorize most would be pretty open minded about sex.

Politics? Well, the one real thread about politics here is a good indication that, depending on the company and forum, craziness does ensue from these topics. If not for the presidential election, I doubt it would have come up.

Religion? In just about every other forum I have been on, craziness and name calling and general intolerance does happen when the subject of religion comes up. My theory as to why it hasn't here is because most are open minded about sex and generally pretty liberal about what other people think and believe as long as you don't try to force your thoughts and beliefs on them. :twocents-02cents:

I noticed that the debate in the politics thread wasn't about the hot-button issues. Instead, it was about what we think the candidates will do with those hot button issues. Most of us think that Romney will make the economy worse and try to outlaw abortion. There are a few who disagree with that. But no one here seems to be against abortion in general. THAT is where the really intense debates happen.

I thought this speech about religious tolerance from over 200 years ago is still pretty amazing. Wish people then had understood it, wish people now would.
Red Jacket on the Religion of the White Man and the Red

Red Jacket (c.1758–1830)

(1805)

Born about 1752, died in 1830; his Nation, the Senecas, his home, near Geneva; his real name, Sogoyewapha, the name “Red Jacket” coming from an embroidered scarlet jacket presented to him by a British officer during the Revolution; saw service on the American side in the War of 1812.

FRIEND AND BROTHER:—It was the will of the Great Spirit that we should meet together this day. He orders all things and has given us a fine day for our council. He has taken His garment from before the sun and caused it to shine with brightness upon us. Our eyes are opened that we see clearly; our ears are unstopped that we have been able to hear distinctly the words you have spoken. For all these favors we thank the Great Spirit, and Him only.
Brother, this council fire was kindled by you. It was at your request that we came together at this time. We have listened with attention to what you have said. You requested us to speak our minds freely. This gives us great joy; for we now consider that we stand upright before you and can speak what we think. All have heard your voice and all speak to you now as one man. Our minds are agreed.
Brother, you say you want an answer to your talk before you leave this place. It is right you should have one, as you are a great distance from home and we do not wish to detain you. But first we will look back a little and tell you what our fathers have told us and what we have heard from the white people.
Brother, listen to what we say. There was a time when our forefathers owned this great island. Their seats extended from the rising to the setting sun. The Great Spirit had made it for the use of Indians. He had created the buffalo, the deer, and other animals for food. He had made the bear and the beaver. Their skins served us for clothing. He had scattered them over the country and taught us how to take them. He had caused the earth to produce corn for bread. All this He had done for His red children because He loved them. If we had some disputes about our hunting-ground they were generally settled without the shedding of much blood.
But an evil day came upon us. Your forefathers crossed the great water and landed on this island. Their numbers were small. They found friends and not enemies. They told us they had fled from their own country for fear of wicked men and had come here to enjoy their religion. They asked for a small seat. We took pity on them, granted their request, and they sat down among us. We gave them corn and meat; they gave us poison in return.
The white people, brother, had now found our country. Tidings were carried back and more came among us. Yet we did not fear them. We took them to be friends. They called us brothers. We believed them and gave them a larger seat. At length their numbers had greatly increased. They wanted more land; they wanted our country. Our eyes were opened and our minds became uneasy. Ware took place. Indians were hired to fight against Indians, and many of our people were destroyed. They also brought strong liquor among us. It was strong and powerful, and has slain thousands.
Brother, our seats were once large and yours were small. You have now become a great people, and we have scarcely a place left to spread our blankets. You have got our country, but are not satisfied; you want to force your religion upon us.
Brother, continue to listen. You say that you are sent to instruct us how to worship the Great Spirit agreeably to His mind; and, if we do not take hold of the religion which you white people teach we shall be unhappy hereafter. You say that you are right and we are lost. How do we know this to be true? We understand that your religion is written in a Book. If it was intended for us, as well as you, why has not the Great Spirit given to us, and not only to us, but why did He not give to our forefathers the knowledge of that Book, with the means of understanding it rightly. We only know what you tell us about it. How shall we know when to believe, being so often deceived by the white people?
Brother, you say there is but one way to worship and serve the Great Spirit. If there is but one religion, why do you white people differ so much about it? Why not all agreed, as you can all read the Book?
Brother, we do not understand these things. We are told that your religion was given to your forefathers and has been handed down from father to son. We also have a religion which was given to our forefathers and has been handed down to us, their children. We worship in that way. It teaches us to be thankful for all the favors we receive, to love each other, and to be united. We never quarrel about religion.
Brother, the Great Spirit has made us all, but He has made a great difference between His white and His red children. He has given us different complexions and different customs. To you He has given the arts. To these He has not opened our eyes. We know these things to be true. Since He has made so great a difference between us in other things, why may we not conclude that He has given us a different religion according to our understanding? The Great Spirit does right. He knows what is best for His children; we are satisfied.
Brother, we do not wish to destroy your religion or take it from you. We only want to enjoy our own.
Brother, you say you have not come to get our land or our money, but to enlighten our minds. I will now tell you that I have been at your meetings and saw you collect money from the meeting. I can not tell what this money was intended for, but suppose that it was for your minister; and, if we should conform to your way of thinking, perhaps you may want some from us.
Brother, we are told that you have been preaching to the white people in this place. These people are our neighbors. We are acquainted with them. We will wait a little while and see what effect your preaching has upon them. If we find it does them good, makes them honest, and less disposed to cheat Indians, we will then consider again of what you have said.
Brother, you have now heard our answer to your talk, and this is all we have to say at present. As we are going to part, we will come and take you by the hand, and hope the Great Spirit will protect you on your journey and return you safe to your friends.

Well bless you, you're here too. Came back to meet the author, (he makes me employ that word,, Says, "Every Possible Opportunity"), when he logged back in. Says, there's some things I need to clear up.

First off, yes my character is maybe a tad macho, tho them who haven't lost all their Brotherly love, family values, to some mixed up belief system BS, being propagated by the socialist liberals, would tell you it's just being a man. And since we're on the subject, I'm not lost in the dark ages as some have put it. The author, (hey, what can I do?), is one of these good attentioned ppl caught up in this liberal propagateing. Even so there's plenty we agree on, like that, it's a bad thing, that men don't give woman proper respect any more. Like, sometimes getting the door for a lady, or helping her with her bags from shopping should be nice, and not just awkward. (I got to say on that last one,,, Well, I mean, when they ask you to hold, or even carry their hand bag, well it's no wonder men shy away.)

I digress, or just got away from what I'm sposta be telling you. I was going on about my character bc, the author, (I think I'll have a stamp made), says, I'm an egotistical, arrogant, greedy, macho, bastard, sometimes when he's mad, he throws in "capitalist cock sucker" at the end. Which I only half understand.... I mean I understand the sucker part, cuz as someone who has had so many rumors made up about them, he knows I'm a little sensitive on that sort of BS, and I learned something in the anger management class before I quit, that ppl will say stuff when their mad just to make you mad. Well I knew that, but mostly if I can see that happening, I don't punch no one anymore, just break things, if that.

Oh, but the other part makes no sense. Everyone knows capitalism is a good, well great thing. Without the competition provided by a capitalist economy, everything comes to a stop, talk about being stuck in the dark ages!

Well anyway, , I supposedly called the injun Red coat, cuz one, it was my macho arrogance, or two, my plan, "Idiotic Macho Attitude". Says, ether I started with such a pre conception of the junk in the article that I didn't even pay enough attention to get his name right, or I'm such an asshole, that I called him that to be a bastard. I'm betting on the second, but anyhoo, says, that was part of the sarcasm.

I'm not done explaining the macho thing yet, but the other thing to clear up is, saying that the early Americans had to, if you want to be exact, was forced to, kill injins like old Red. Well when the, (apply stamp here,,, Oh, alright), author, said that, but it would appear that the injun lived to be 72,or78, I knew he didn't mean we killed old Red himself, just others like him. That makes all the sense in the world. He was already an old man of 47,or 53, and what you might call a pacifist when he wrote that. (Odd word, pacifist, comes from passive, but someone swapped out the s's for a c, and sneaked, fist, on to the end as a little joke  )
So being old and whimppy, we prolly just reservationed his ass pretty deep. Gave him a seat so to speak, somewhere he couldn't start much. Then we continued our policies of provoking his ppl when ever we could, (unofficially of course), and at the same time fixing some of that turmoil, and claiming it all had to do with their crazy savage ideas of equality of everything including plants and such. Hell, can you imagine how many tree huggers we would have.

So, yea we were able to convince a lot of the heathens to get right. And it was policies like that and the systematic starvation by killing off their food supply, by shooting it or poisoning and cutting off their water, that among others, helped us tame this country.

So, we didn't have to kill them all, which got increasingly tough as they started to fight back and hide better, but also prolly would have been wrong. Tho there's a bunch in Reno, Las Vegas, and Atlantic City, that would beg to differ.

Now to the macho/man thing. We are not talking about the hard line Mexican kind of macho, or machismo. That is irrelevant, cuz it's an alien concept. It has nothing to do with the America kind of macho. It seems pointless to bring up what you might call an immigration issue in this discussion of Americans and America Indians.

But anyway, I asked how my dealings with a man injun could be called macho? Well I guess macho, just means, supremacists, that basses his supremacy on his maleness, and in my case also cuz I'm white and America, so he says, whatever that means. I mean what's his point. Has he been drinking again?

Victor Verbose.

PS. I'll tell ya how I know those liberal socialist are trying to divide good Americans, from our morals, and God himself, by propagating all that liberal commy crap. It's right there in the word. They PROPA-GATE, Or, Proper-Gate their dogma out there to Proper Gate us away from good God fearing ideas. If you look at words, sometimes that's all the answers you need.

I do not believe in A God, G-d, Gods or anything like similar. I am not spiritual either.
With that said, I am very religious. I attend church whenever in a city where I can find my church. I was raised Ethical Culture.

Sure
I was raised in Ethical Culture, it can be called many things....ethical society, ethical union etc....
Ethical does not take a place as to whether or not there is a higher being or not. That is up to each member. Rather on the here and now. If I had to compare it to something a little more mainstream I would say humanist. It is basically a religion centered on ethics and morality rather then theology. The purpose is to educate, encourage, and respect humanity over all....some lump nature or the environment into this as well. It puts a lot of efffises on "the golden rule" Treat others how you want to be treated. As with most religions it is very interpretative. We have regular Sunday meetings, A Sunday school (that i taught at for many years). Instead of reading from, or hearing stories from a the bible with valuable life lessons etc...we would sew sleeping bags for the homeless or come collectively on a issue the group felt strongly about (mostly child related issues because we were children...like labor laws in other countries) and discuss what we could do...and then do it.
Over the years ethical has been a silent partner in helping many social justice programs develop or started completely.
Some examples of what they founded....
Visiting Nurse Service
US settlement house movement
Free School lunch/breakfast (with the help of the black panther party)
Some examples of what they helped to establish
NAACP
American civil liberties union
National Child labor Commission

Someone said something to the idea of religions being cults with a political position....that sounds like us hardcore.

I said I attend church when I can find my church... because there are so few. Mostly in the NY/NJ area....north east in general. There is one in Texas, North Cali and a couple other places.
Hope I explained things....

Hi All,

Most of Canada has flushed religion out of our daily lives and Politics. The result speak for themselves... The basic line of religion " BASIC "
like " Don't do to others blah blah " are a good basis for a sociaty... That's it, and that where it should stop... Moral Fiber...

The US are wayyyyyy to Religious... Not has extremist like the Muslims... but getting there. The sooner Religion will be kicked out
of the day to day life and kept within your house boundaries... The better your country will be... When politics and religion meet,
nothing good comes out of it...

Democrats are by numbers way less religious than republicans and most scientist, free thinkers and genius of our days are Democrats...
And those statements you can check for yourself online...

What you guy's call Ethical Culture or Humanism is what we call in Canada " Moral Culture " and it's a class from 5th grade to end of
High School... ( Religious studies been phased out ) and it basiccaly a class where you talk about what good Socially and Ethically...

Yep, we have a atheist PM. She is also a redhead and as dumb as a box of hammers, but that is besides the point.

Our religious nutters have stuck to stopping the introduction of a R category for computer games. Which doesn't stop the game being released, just that they will have an MA rating instead.

Now that's a lie! The Great whites and crocodiles are not poisonous, the Kangaroos don't even bite (they disembowel you with their back legs). Wallabies, koalas and wombats are not even dangerous. That is 3 whole species that do not bite, poison or kick people to death, what more could you want!?!?

Nice try, but Koalas may be spreading STDs. So while not poisonous they still may be dangerous if they pee on you.

One Direction band members Harry Styles and Liam Payne are worried they may have caught chlamydia while in Australia last week.

Liam Payne and Harry Styles, who were in Australia on tour with their band members, cuddled up to a 3-year-old Koala named Kat who unexpectedly urinated on both of them. Ultimately, this is a health hazard, since 80% of koalas carry chlamydia, which is a sexually transmitted disease whose effects include severe conjunctivitis (commonly known as pink eye), incontinence, prostatitis and kidney damage.

"I'm genuinely scared. This is worrying," Payne told the Sun. "I’d have never picked the thing up if I'd known."

Can You get Chlamydia from Koalas?

While transmission from koalas to humans is unlikely, some koalas have a specific strain of chlamydia that can be passed to other species. Fortunately, chances that the 18-year-old singers contracted the disease are very slim, and in the worst case scenario it is said to be treatable.

Awww sorry, I meant our redhead. She has her moments though. This is another comment on how retarded the republicans are, but its actually her replying to a gesture by the opposition leader.

I had totally forgot this clip or would have broken up the Tim Minchin post with it. it fits very well I think.

I believe in God.

All hail the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM), Lord of Lords, King of Kings, and the one-true God!

And no, I'm not kidding. The FSM is no more, and no less, ridiculous than the God or Gods of other religions.

In a very nominal sense you could say that I don't believe in any supreme beings or higher powers, but only insofar as I take no position whatsoever on the matter. I simply don't even consider the question of deities one way or the other; as far as I can see, it has no bearing on me at all.

I believe that there is someone watching over me...or I wouldn't be here right now
