It won't affect me in any way, since I (mostly) dropped social media before TikTok really ascended. The case is very interesting, though. I'll be keen to see whether it will cause migration to other social media, or cause a notable uptick in region switchers and/or VPNs.

You can VPN but the thing is that the Google play store can block apps by region and as far as I know you can't just change that on the fly. You would have to do a different Google account or something like that, it's been like 2 years since I encountered a region block.

You can. I have ExpressVPN and I have the app on my phone. It’s really easy to use, literally just download the app, login to your account, set your preferred region and after that it takes one click to connect.

From what I’ve read, TikTok would be removed from the App Store and if there’s a mandatory update, US users wouldn’t be able to update, making the app unusable. Some sites also block vpn traffic.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the company that owns TikTok is forced to sell and Elon buys it.

TikTok is one of my guilty pleasures, I do enjoy mindlessly scrolling through clips. I also have a lot of saved recipes and other helpful stuff for issues I've got, so I guess I'll spend some time downloading all that so I can access it again.

When it was newly trending back in 2020 I did get thousands of new followers from TikTok to my content pages, so that was nice, too. That fell off after a bit though, especially after my first ban lol.

I don't know what will replace it for me. I've tried IG Reels but it just doesn't operate the same. The algorithm on TikTok was magic and actually brought me stuff I liked.

I'm sad sad.

And for a side comment: Elon Musk looks exactly like the type of guy who would be the villain in a James Bond movie, he has that exact look. I have never liked the guy personally.

No, I don’t use TikTok. Facebook is the one I use most often, and I’d be upset to lose.

Every time I’ve ever heard about one of those stupid TikTok challenges that kids were doing (“Slap a teacher”…”The Benadryl challenge”…etc.), I shook my head about how sad it is that people will go to such lengths just to get social media likes from others who don’t give a shit about them. But I’m sure that even after the TikTok ban, they will just continue the stupid, reckless behavior on one of the other social media apps instead (Facebook Live, Instagram Live, Snaphat, YouTube Live, etc.).

Had a kid tell me about a month ago that he was absent from school one day, because he’d been up all night on his iPad. He is 6 or 7.

FB is still censoring. They’ve gotten worse than ever with that censoring shit, which is why I can’t stand AI. Some figures of speech that people are used to saying in their everyday interactions with friends…could get them flagged or their post declined on FB.

I’m in a soap opera FB group (There’s a list of names of all the group members, and there’s no one listed as the admin or moderator), and a lot of our posts get declined now for being flagged as harmful or “known to cause conflict within the group.” We can’t even type the word “a$$” now…which used to be the way we censored the word ass. But now the post will get declined if you post it as “a$$.” But if you type “a**,” it will go through. I also found out that the word “video” will automatically get your post declined…which is something new. SMH. But if you type “v i d e o,” the post will go through.

Sometimes you’ll post a comment on someone’s status, and FB will put a disclaimer “This message has been hidden.” And then a person has to click “unhide” if they want to see the comment. Lol. Earlier there was a hidden post that said “Tear that ass up.”
