UK Digital Economy Act Coming April

For those that haven't heard and that live in the UK.

UK Government are bringing in a new law this April that requires websites that provide pornography to ask their users to prove they are over the age of 18.

This new law comes into effect in April of this year. If sites do not comply they will have their site blocked by UK ISP's and fined £250,000 or 5% of their financial turnover.

Users in the UK will also need to provide their passport / credit card information before they can proceed to that site.

At the moment it looks like one of the providers of this age verification solution will be Mindgeek (not aware of any potential competitors at the moment, in fact), which I imagine most of you on here will be familiar with from sending them DMCA notices for their various sites (pornhub, redtube etc). Do I want to trust them with my personal information? I'll give you one guess.

As for blocking, this legislation looks like the government finally giving themselves the (legal) power to censor the internet (debates about the ease of circumventing blocks are a separate matter), something they haven't had until now. Prior to this any blocking was either ordered by the courts following legal cases brought by big film studios (usually torrent indexing sites) or implemented voluntarily by service providers (that is the service providers voluntarily signed up to a blocking service and imposed it on their subscribers - most UK homes already get a censored version of the Internet). So a watershed is crossed.
