I wouldn't panic too much yet. This change isn't a positive, but it's not the end of the world. Let's look at what the agreement actually says:

When investigating alleged violations of these Terms, Microsoft reserves the right to review Your Content in order to resolve the issue. However, we cannot monitor the entire Services and make no attempt to do so.

Now, I could be wrong about this because it's been a while since I checked and it could have changed, but Skype is a peer to peer service, it directly connects users when making calls instead of going through Microsoft's servers. They can't really monitor your Skype calls live. These terms also don't go into effect until May, Microsoft publishes these things early for feedback. There's time to change this. I think honestly they're just clarifying the already existing terms and they just didn't do a good job of it.

But as usual prepare for the worst, just don't panic too much just yet.

This FOSTA thing drives me nuts already. The term offensive is too easily used as a weapon of choice to aggressively shut down a discourse.
Yep, the whole thing needs to go right in the trash. Re-do!

Yes, that has changed. It used to be peer to peer. It isn't anymore:

This will be a great opportunity for developers... the person who programs the next adult friendly skype wins.

That's a great point. Except, the way I see it going down is someone creating a more distributed communication protocol. Something that isn't centralized with nothing/no one to be held responsible for it's content. Kind of like bittorrent or ToR. Or does something like that already exist?

All they need is their HQ in Russia or Cayman or something.

Yep, far too many try to legislate moral and/or social actions. Here in the US, both sides do it far too much.

This whole SESTA/FOSTA thing is starting to look an awful lot less like a well-meaning but misguided attempt to protect sex trafficking victims (whilst simultaneously placing legal sex workers and people who are sex workers by choice in danger), and a lot more like a Trojan Horse designed to give third parties carte blanche to censor the internet and read private conversations on a whim. Did we learn nothing from 1984?

I'm confused, what about all the long distance relationships? How will they have Skype sex if you can't do nudity on Skype?

Also, who's job is it going to be viewing all the sexual content and deciding if a ban is warranted? How many "shows" will they watch before they decide to issue the ban? This would surely be a voyeurs dream job!

The bit about Call of Duty did make me laugh though. That you can play a violent video game but god forbid you say "fuck" or show your boobs to your boyfriend over a private Skype call. The world is fucking insane! Wait... Can I still say "fuck" on outlook?

Exactly. This is by no means the end goal, not even close. It's not even a secret that the end goal of some of the lobbying organizations supporting this bill is the complete prohibition of internet pornography.

Any video calling app with end-to-end encryption would fit the bill, there's no rule that says you have to use skype for video calls. ICQ (there's a name I haven't heard in about 15 years) already offers this according to their website.

You mean like Skype? ;)

I guess if you continue to use skype, make sure you enable "Private Conversation". Then they really can't enforce their rules. I wonder if they plan on changing anything with that feature, which just got released, to allow for compliance with FOSTA.

Doesn't support video calls.

Honestly, I feel like a lot of what's going on is treating 1984 like a play book.

I reached out to Skyprivate for their opinion because well, Skype-based camsite.
"Unless someone reports it" ... but if you google "Skype sex show" they come up. How long until Microsoft slams them or otherwise?

No, we didn't.

I think Skyprivate is probably right. Over the last 1/2 dozen year, I've seen many proposed and several passed pieces of legislation both in the US and the UK that various people and groups claimed were going to have a major impact on sex workers/camgirl. They pretty much all have turned out to be nothing burgers. It will be interesting to see if CB follows MFC lead about date raffles. Are date raffles common on CB?

I've started using Discord in the past few months and so far I'm loving it. It has far more features than skype and by using the Discord App I'm inline with customers who have more disposable income than most..gamers. I'm also a gamer and a complete technophile therefore it's an easy transition for me, but I do understand that it may not be as easy for some people to adapt. I have several skype customers that just can't wrap their heads around shifting to alternative services.

But we shouldn't panic because these policies can be re-worked and re-worded once they review all of the push back surrounding these changes. So far Discord as far I can see is the only one to define their stance on adult content as recently as today. I wrote an article about it a few months ago with new policy updates if anyone would like to check it out Discord, The New Skype Alternative For Cammodels I'm currently working on some other alternatives as well.

Oops I'm not sure what happened with the link? Thanks Audri for pointing it out. Here it is again
Discord, The New Skype Alternative For Cammodels

Can a non Cammer use Discord too?

Yes anyone can use Discord. It began as a text/audio app mostly used during gaming but in 2017 they introduced video chat as well.
