Anyone got any books they're reading right now?

Currently I'm reading through Girl in Translation and it's about a first generation Chinese teenager coming to America at 12 and learning English and existing with the culture shock.
It's really good so far. :)

Not big on books( what is this, the 1800's?) but the last fun book I read was I Am America (And So Can You!). As a kid I thought the Wayside and Goosebumps books were fun.

STOP MAKING ME LIKE YOU!

But yeah, I'm not sure anything I read currently would be considered fun. Unless you wanna count comic books, see it has the words books in it. Everything else I read it horror(ish).

I recently finished reading The Lord of the Rings! I love fantasy & was crazy about the films back when they came out, so it is bonkers that I have only just read them. I LOVED them :h: like so much I am tempted to just re-read them right away because I am sad they are over.

I just started reading a book called The Shadow of the Wind. I saw it on my dad's bookshelf and was drawn in by the cover&title right away. I refused to read the back, so I don't really know what I'm in for, but it begins in Barcelona in the 20s with a boy and his father - the first chapter was called The Cemetary of Forgotten Books and it was absolutely magical. I'm intrigued :h:

I realized I came up with a dumb name. I guess I should've put something else.
That's what happens when you create topics on a popsicle high.

Any book you enjoy reading can be talked about.

:D

I resisted reading the Harry Potter books for years. But after LilyMarie raved about them, I figured they must be something special. And they truly are. The Hunger Games trilogy is also great fun. If you like crime stuff, John Sandford's Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers novels are wonderful.

Fight Club has been one of my favorite movies of all time, and for that reason I resisted reading the book for fear of it being way better than the movie and possibly ruining it.

However, there was a recent announcement on an upcoming "sequel" to the novel. It's going to be a graphic novel series apparently.

Anyway, I figured it wouldn't make sense to read that without reading the book as it will be a sequel to the book and not the movie.

I am about one-third through the book, and wow. I am loving it so far. It's really a completely different experience than the movie. The movie was more like a 3rd-person perspective watching all the events unfold. While the book is directly from the narrator's perspective. Almost as if someone is simply transcribing every thought flying through his brain.

The story bounces around so much because his thoughts are bouncing around so much.

Really enjoying it so far.

Currently reading the Vampire Academy series because I saw the movie for the 1st book & liked it. More comedy & action than Twilight. Main character is a smart ass, teenage, female vampire in training to become a protector to vampire royalty.

I'm re-reading the Ender's Shadow series. I have so much mad love for Bean and his tragic life.

Ender's Game was the first series that got me into reading fantasy/sci-fi. It is amazing. I am afraid to watch the movie for fear of it ruining it. Bean is the man!

If you are into sci-fi, you need to check out The Reality Dysfunction by Peter F. Hamilton. It is a 3 part series about a futuristic human race that has split into factions, the Adamist and Edenist. The series takes place over 300 years but 95% of the events occur over one year, I believe. I don't really want to give anything away but something happens to the humans that threatens to change everything forever. It is not your average series but it is well worth the read.

If you are into fantasy, well then, there are a few series you NEED to read. The first is the Mistborn Triology by Brandon Sanderson. The main character is Vin, a girl who is a thief and lives on the streets. She encounters a group of people who try and bring down the Lord Ruler, who has controlled the world for 1,000 years. There is a magic system unlike anything you have ever read called Allomancy. It is a magic system that is based off of metals. Allomancers injest metal shavings that they then 'burn' to give them special/enhanced abilities. You will fall in love with this series I promise you.

Another series is The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. It is coming of age series, kinda like Harry Potter or Ender's Game. It centers around Kvothe, who is telling the events of his life to the Chronicler. After his parents are murdered by the 'Chandrian', he sets out to enter a dangerous school of magic. Pretty much everything has already happened and is continuing to happen and you read the events leading up to the present. Patrick Rothfuss is still currently writing the 3rd book but it is a great series. It has interesting magic system, fae, kings, all the classical good shit that is in a fantasy.

Of course there is A Song of Ice and Fire, also known as the Game of Thrones, by George R. R. Martin. Amazing series, if you watch the show, it goes pretty well with the storyline in the books.

Last but not least, there is a series called The Wheel of Time, by Robert Jordan. It is comprised of 14 books, not including prequel and companion books. This is also kinda of like a coming to age series. I don't know how to describe this one in a few short sentences. Needless it say, if you enjoy magic, fantasy, conflict, love, struggle between good and evil, you will love this shit out of this.

Check any of these out and let me know if you like them or not. I look forward to see what everyone else is reading atm. :twocents-02cents:

I've skimmed Patrick Rothfuss' books before. I will second that they're pretty amazeballs.

I'm also finished the book I mentioned, and am gonna restart reading the second Howl's Moving Castle book. I kind of read it and left it so I want to start over so it's fresh.

A book that ANYONE with an interest in video games and/or 80s pop culture will LOVE: "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline.

I got it as a gift and put off reading it for months. Then I read it in 2 days. Couldn't put it down. Read it on cam, and I've never seen more grown men beg for "Awww, just ONE more chapter? PLEASE?!?!?!" After that, 5 of them had rented it from their library or bought it to re-read. And over 20 had recommended it to their real life friends. You won't regret it.

Okay. Iris,
You made me want that book.

THREE people told me about that book in the past few days.
I guess it's time to put it on the WL.

Btw, does anyone like teen fiction? (With a gory twist).

There's a book series I fell in love with, called The Cirque du Freak series. I enjoy his take on vampires a lot more than a lot of other novels. (Even though the villains are kind of odd...Not gonna lie there).
But his other series.
Man, his other series, The Demonata Series, if you have a weak stomach, do not read. Some of it is super violent, but it's written oh so good.
Darren Shan is the author.

Don't. Though I wouldn't say the movie ruined the book for me, because it's so lame I don't even put the two together.
Thanks for the book recs, I'm more into sci-fi than fantasy but Name of the Wind has been mentioned to me several times.

I second. I heard the movie wasn't good...

(Also the movie for the Cirque du Freak series was god awful)

Science Fiction/Fantasy has always been my absolute favorite! I'm an avid reader and would often read a book a day when I was in junior high and high school, I wish I had that kind of time now!

If we're talking about FUN books I would highly suggest Terry Pratchett's Discworld series!!

Also, here are some other threads about great books for anyone looking for more awesome book suggestions!

Discworld has some great books, but Raising Steam was sad and disappointing to me. It felt like I was watching a magical place die, and be reborn as a pigeon instead of a phoenix.

I'm reading A Feast for Crows and Akira Vol. 3 Kodansha Paperback. They're both great books and it's interesting to see the similarities and differences between the Akira movie and the graphic novels.

Fortunately there are far more in the series that are amazing! I'm very glad that the series isn't really the sort that needs an ending or anything, like if George R.R. Martin dies before he can finish his series everyone will be quite distraught but Discworld is like a forever living, breathing place and its story never needs an ending.

I'm really sad to hear about Raising Steam, I haven't caught up with the last few books mainly because I've been worried about this very thing. The last one I bought was Unseen Academicals but I've been scared to read it because someone voiced a similar feeling that you have about Raising Steam.

It is so sad and scary what Terry Pratchett is going through. The fact that his Alzheimer's has specifically attacked his ability to write is so completely fucked up. I'm actually REALLY surprised that he has been able to get out as many books as he has since his Alzheimer's really took hold. It's really sad, but he is doing some amazing things as far as raising awareness for dementia, which is just a horrifying disease. I had heard that there might be someone that was going to take over for him, so we'll see if that pans out.

I was reading Wheel of Time when Robert Jordan died before finishing it, it turned out okay. The big problem with George R.R. Martin is that he became too famous, and he only writes when he is home. Even if he lives to two hundred he is super busy all the time.
