I bought a juicer today as an early birthday present to myself! I'm stoked to go out this afternoon and buy up lots of produce.

Camstory, you're darn inspiring in this juicing thread. As of your last update you'd lost nearly 20 pounds from the first weight posted and I applaud you.

I'm going to watch that video today, too and hopefully become even more inspired. I have big goals in mind and I'll post some before and after pictures when I start seeing results. =)

Yay for juicing!

How nice is that, thank you.

I have some bad news. I had a f'ed up Friday and being out of produce gave me excuse to binge eat since. I just weighed myself and 230. Not bad but backwards, or upwards, or I guess most correctly outwards.

I am so glad someone else is posting here, I know without any doubt it will help me stay on track. Now let me tell you something that is not made so clear in the video. If you do it the right way, it's not jumba juice bb. Before I got my juicer and for a while after I had a lot of fun making all sorts of fruit juices. The day I added some veggies is the day the fun died.

I don't want to run you off before you even start, it's not that bad. Though I would have appreciated more honesty in the vid, I think. There would not have been so many juicers sold, and maybe I would not have wanted to start, so maybe the video is exactly as it needs to be. The mean green juice of Joe's is for me doable but not fun. I don't like cucumbers so that is a huge part of it. For me it was the smell more than taste that took some getting used to. I now juice a modified mean green, that I'll call a, "Not so mean, funer green". I have reduced from 1 cucumber to half, have added 1 Apple or 2, increased the half lemon to 1 roughly pealed, done away with the celery, (MFC profile, favorite food = well, I don't like celery) and kept the Kale, and ginger the same. With the 1 Apple add, it is better than without, and Prolly not too sweet. With the 2 Apple add I have gotten to where I enjoy it, tho it proly is too sweet to keep blood sugar at a optimal level. I have just before running out of produce, added two carrots to the mix and found it hardly changes the taste, and for the better I think, and makes me feel better about the fruit to veggie ratio.

Bottom line it is, no big deal if your ready to diet, and the results are pretty good, but it is more diet than fun. I am pretty stoked that you will be here for a while anyway. I sure wish some of the others would post again. Like, Sophia, JJ, Nerdgasum, FernshKiss and the other Ladies who were posting here. Oh, also I found that Jaydenrainey was right, when she suggested that even tho it was not stickily a juice diet, that eating raw can help to stay dieting when you feel like you just have to eat something. (a large spinach, mushroom, olive, pepper, and tomato salad can fill you up the way juice can't) Can't forget the guys, Lex was posting for a while, and there is SoTx, and Nordling, who never said they were juicing but keep some fun mixed in with their juice and smoothie ideas, and MyNameIs, who was creating some really good combos if not strictly diet  juices. Schlmoe, was the green grocer it seemed, with a fantastic wealth of knowledge about foods.

I am again motivated to reach my goals, but will have to sub v8 and beer for today - a fun juice,,,,, what, hops and barely are a grain which is a kind of fruit or veggie I'm sure of it. (BTW Janbe I could use a ride tomorrow to restock, if you can.)

Thank you for the post Allison.

I've got some cactus in my front yard. I've "harvested" a few paddles in the past, and they are pretty good with eggs, etc. But they are a PITA to prepare (always get a few needles stuck in my hand).

I wonder if they can be juiced without removing the spines/needles?

They are pretty easy to prepare once you get the hang of it. You can use an open flame to burn off the spines (or the needle ends ;)) I will throw them on the grill for a bit on each side, or if I'm not grilling I'll use a torch (the $10 kind with a screw on propane bottle). Then, using a sharp knife, scrape against the grain to remove the spine nubs and "eyes" (like scaling a fish). Hold on to the cactus paddle with tongs, or wear those cheap leather palm gloves. After that, you're ready to prepare your dish.

You are lucky to have one in your yard. For eating, I try to select paddles no bigger than my hand (more tender). As far as juicing, it may not matter if you use the bigger (older) paddles. I bet if you blanch them first (20-30 seconds), you will get more juice. And for juicing, I doubt it would matter if you removed the spines or not.

I'm going to try juicing a couple of paddles without scraping them first.

If you never hear from me again, it means it didn't go well, the spines killed me :)
OK, its been a while I'm worried.

I'm gonna be dieting/juicing from the day after my birthday (which is tomorrow).
Gonna be having juice for at least one - and maybe two - of my three meals a day. Breakfast will either be juice or low fat cereal, I'll have a juice after I get back from the gym, and then eat a low fat meal in the evening (Quorn stuff seems to be low in fat/calories so I'm gonna stock up on that shit and chuck it in the Foreman grill, and then throw in some form of potato and some veg). Gonna cut out any drink that isn't water or juiced fruit/veg (unless I'm out at the weekend, in which case I'll allow myself a few beers).
That's the plan anyway :)

My refrigerator is full of yummy (and some not so yummy) fruits and vegetables. I even bought a juicing recipe book so I can try to make yummy things.

These are a good start, right? Kale, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, celery, kiwi, honeydew melon, apples (red and green), blueberries, strawberries, oranges, peaches, pears, limes, lemons, raspberries, blackberries and 2 sweet potatoes.

I have a question though. For those of you that did a juice fast, how much did you drink every day? Just 3 servings? Were you hungry?

Those are all good choices allison!
Sorry I disappeared cam. I haven't been juicing as much lately and my double shift cam schedule makes it pretty hard. I need to get back into doing it soon.

Apples are pretty much essential as almost every recipe I've come across uses them. Plus, they go with just about anything, you get a lot of juice out of them, and they sweeten the taste of your juice, which, if it's mainly vegetables, you'll probably appreciate.
Kale's really good too as it's rammed full of nutrients and it doesn't really taste of much. Cucumbers and celery don't taste so good when juiced but I found carrots to be fine.
I didn't get on too well with oranges but I don't like bits in my orange juice, and my juicer did nothing to sieve the bits so they wound up in my juice whenever I used oranges.
Lime juice is pretty potent, so be careful not to use too much in any one drink.
Raspberries, blueberrys, etc. are the fucking bomb and taste amazing when juiced.

I would also recommend getting some pineapple and some ginger. Pineapple juice is lovely and sweet and ginger helps mask the taste of less than tastey vegetables.

If you use carrots use the carrot tops as well. They contain tons of nutrients!! Me and a few friends have tried 10 day reboots and all have lost lots of weight and did feel better and 'clearer' after.

"a large spinach, mushroom, olive, pepper, and tomato salad "...... Mmmmm BB ! Dinner tonight ! with cheese, bacon and ranch dressing

While I'm not looking for the diet aspect, I'm still on the "whole fiber" smoothies almost daily. Also, if your juices aren't tasty enuff BC of veggie content, try dumping it in a blender and add a peeled banana, Guava or Papaya chunks and blend up in the juice.

I just did 2 apples, a pear, 3 carrots and a celery stalk. It was delicious. I apologize in advance for what I assume will be excessive posting. =)
Excessive posting     love excess

And the longest straight juice fast for me thus far has been 6 days, and yes I was hungry, but only for the first two days. After that I found that the ritual of eating, being around others who were eating, was the hook. I am doing the hunger hump right now again, and get to go shopping which always gives me extra will. And WOW what a fabulous verify of produce you have, I'm using your post to make a list from.

Sounds like a good selection other than the raspberries & I never had kale. I think I would go with organic as much as possible.

As I was telling Cam earlier tonight, I totally fell of the wagon. I'm actually planning on starting juicing again next month so I'll be all sexy for the big convention. (And because Mr. Nerd has a physical in mid November) I...just have to finish the bag of mini baby ruth candybars in my pantry before anything healthy has a chance of happening.

The first person I can remember promoting a juicer was Jack LaLane (sp?). He was old when I was young and I doubt if he is still living. Anyway he was really into body building & physical fitness.

Yes he was older when I was young, and I'm sure I was older when you were young. I think its LaLanne, as this happens to be the last name of a close friend, which I believe is the same. And yea I think it was less than 2 years ago? But not too long ago he passed. As a toon watching aged kid i remember sometimes being up before the toons would start and watching The Jack LaLanne Show. Remember he had a big Shepard looking dog that would run on with him at the start of the show, and he'd pat the dog and talk to it a bit as he was setting up that days show. Then he would tell the dog to beat it, and the dog would run off and lay down.

I believe he once swam from Alcatraz Island to S.F. towing a small dingy by a rope. He was incredibly fit well into old age. RIP Jack.

I remember Jumpin Jack LaLanne !! My Grans used to watch his show and do the stuff in front of the tv along with him. I remember he died last year bc it was 1-11 and it was one of those 'oh shit, he was still alive' moments.. He was indeed old, pushing 100. I remember he was very pro USA and much the patriot. Many times he'd give a lil 'Yay America' speech at the end of his show beside the flag..... Not something that many people care about or are brave enough to do these days. hehehe, just for nostalgia sake, I think I'll see if I can find some of the old shows on Hulu or somewhere.... Black-N-White TV baby.. Anyone remember that?

HA! hes got a site still.. has one of his speeches on a lil tv on the front page...

I decided that until the day after my birthday, I'm just doing one or two juices a day and still eating solids, just healthier. So I'll be starting my juice fast with a terrible tequila hangover on the 9th of September!

Do most people just do a few things at once in the juicer?

I just did a handful of green grapes, a kale leaf, 2 celery stalks, 3 carrots, 2 apples, 2 oranges, a pear and a peach. (I'm juicing for two and a half people.)

Well, day 5. Need to buy some proper produce. Crystal Light wasn't getting it, so I thought beer and v8 - what the hell. Not the healthiest, but better than you'd prolly think. Well that was day 2, again CL wasn't getting it, so last night took the 8-10 oz. of v8 left and doubled it with a can of tomato sauce, some black pepper, a bunch of hot sauce, and lots of garlic. I had gotten so off any diet there for 5 or 6 days, and still wanting to meet my goal of 200 by Oct. 1st, I just figured a straight fast had to be the way. well I guess last night when I thought to finish the V8 I felt i needed some food, and then when i thought to double it with the tomato sauce and all, that was bc I thought if I just made some shit that killed me I'd make that goal no sweat. Obviously didn't work, but that V8spl and the large cup o coffee mix made me think I might die for a few hours last night.

Hey, it feels like I have drifted a bit off the healthy course I first intended? Still aiming at 200 by 10/1, but only as a secondary target. I must first retrain my sights on the health pov, i think.

Well after a week of nothing solid with the exception of a few salads, I weighed in at 221. So hitting a new low should have put me on a high, right? Wrong, feeling a little down I thought a piece cinnamon toast couldn't hurt. Just a little comfort food. I needed more comfort than I had thought at first. Turns out I needed about a half a loaf of comfort. Later looking for something raw, well close to raw, (I was totally out of anything raw), I found a can of peaches. Wow, peaches, even canned peaches, are really good in a bowl of heavy whipping cream. Wow, as I finished the peaches I read the carton, - incredible the amount of calories heavy whipping cream has!

Wheeling back from the corner store my nutritionist, and personal health counselor Janbe drove up and positioned her car between me and the crosswalk. Looking around there was no escape. Maybe she wouldn't notice the 36oz beer, and V8 hanging behind me in the open bike bag. Oh, I guess I just busted my self, (think she saw anyway), but if you read this before I e-mail you Jan, here's the list.
Bag of granny Smith
Kale
Cucumber
2or3 lemons
A few mushrooms
And maybe a little mint, if they have any fresh.

Back on it again, I have to break this pattern of rewarding my weight loss with quantities of high calorie food.

Dude, cam, I do that all the time. I'll be like "I ate carrots for a healthy snack today! I should have cookies for dinner!" We're going to pick up juicing again soon, we just have to make it a little more toddler friendly this time. Our munchkin is 15 months old and wants to eat whatever mommy and daddy have so we'll need to make sure we get some softer fruits and veggies this time. She can handle apples but not raw carrots so we'll have to find something that's not all fruit that she can enjoy.

I once, a long time ago, started a diet.. I stopped eating bread (I'm french :? ) and only ate 3 meals a day, once of each, no refills :D and no snacks. I lost 12 Kgs in one month

219 this morning, looks like I wont make 200 by the first, but I have been doing less starve/binge and more healthy raw/juice eating. I miss ice cream, but find the toughest thing to break from to be bread. I roasted some sweet potato, zucchini squash, and pear, that was killer good, but prolly pretty high in calories too. It and a spinach salad is all I had yesterday so shouldn't go backwards I hope.

Going to start off the morning with a juice, and maybe wont be tempted into 2or3 pieces of raisin cinnamon toast.

Well I did have 2 pieces or raisin toast, (Well raisin bread, which I carefully cooked, making raisin toast). One was a heal piece, - dam it made no sense to let the last of the loaf go to waist,,, what! This is very frustrating tho, in the last two days I have taken in like < 1500 & <1000 calories each day respectively, but somehow this morning weighted in at 222, + 3 lbs. So I am going to try to do a week straight with only juice. That means I can't justify eating near melted sherbet b/c, well basically I could have drank it.

Just made a pretty good, (like I would want to drink it, pretty good) lunch juice. It was 3 green apples, one huge carrot, a persian cucumber, 1/2 lime, chunk of ginger, 2 handfuls of blueberries, and two bunches of green grapes.
It was almost too sweet, but hardly any cumber taste, - sweet!

Oh BTW the juice that comes from even lightly cooked bacon is negligible, but it makes a very nice odor. :)
