OK, I just started Planescape Torment on Windows 8.1, but the game screen is too big on my monitor. I tried repositioning the screen in the Nvdidia control panel and this did work to a degree, but I still have some of my menu cut off when I am playing. Google tells me to go to the game file compatibility mode and do something with display dpi scaling (No clue what this means lol), but the option is greyed out.

Anyone have suggestions on how to fix this? I am incredibly non-techy so be gentle with me. Am I just gonna be stuck guess where to click on that side of the screen when I play?

try different screen resolutions. If you have a Nvidia control panel, it'll have settings for resolution in there. Choose the lowest resolution and work your way up.

Have you downloaded the widescreen mod and UI fix for it?

Double-click on widescreen-v3.05.exe (it doesn't matter where it is) and Browse to the directory on your computer where Planescape: Torment is installed (this is the directory where torment.exe lives, default by GOG it's: C:/Program Files/GOG.com/PlanescapeTorment). Click "Install" once you've done this.

When the new window opens, choose to install "Component [Widescreen Mod]" -- even if your monitor is not widescreen -- by typing "I" and pressing ENTER.

When asked for your X-coordinates enter the number of pixels wide you'd like the resolution to be. When asked for your Y-coordinates enter the number of pixels high you'd like the resolution to be.

If you have an LCD monitor, then you'll probably want to run the game at your monitor's highest resolution to achieve the maximum sharpness of graphics. Here's a list of common resolutions for those who feel unsure of what to type. You can keep experimenting until you find one that looks best for you.

- CRT monitors (X/Y): 800/600, 1024/768, 1280/960, 1280/1024

- Widescreen monitors (X/Y): 1280/800, 1440/900, 1680/1050, 1920/1200

Once you're happy with your selection, type 'Y' to install.

Note: You MUST follow the next step in order to fix the graphics at this new higher resolution!
instructions for UI change said:
STEP 2: Install Ghostdog's incredible UI mod

What it does:

Unfortunately, increasing the resolution of the game will knock many special graphical effects out of place, put videos in the top left corner of your screen, make the menu screens look really ugly, and possibly even make the text really hard to read. Luckily this mod fixes ALL the above problems... It's really quite amazing!

How to install:

This mod is a little trickier to install, but it's worth it, and all of the mods in the later steps are installed in the same way...

Download Ghostdog's mod.

When you've downloaded it, open it up (just double-click on the file). Now extract the entire archive directly into the game directory (this is the directory where torment.exe is - default by GOG it's C:/Program Files/GOG.com/PlanescapeTorment).

Once you've done this, double-click on the setup file 'Setup-GhostDog's-PST-UI.exe' from within the game's directory.

In the window that opens you will then get five options:

- Install the mod with the default fonts

- Install the mod with 20% bigger fonts

- Install the mod with 40% bigger fonts

- Install the mod with 80% bigger fonts

- Install the mod with 120% bigger fonts

It's a pretty hard thing to gauge from just looking at the numbers, but luckily Ghostdog has also provided a screenshot to help you decide. Take a look at the preview to see what size is easiest to read on your monitor.

To pick an option, just type a number associated with it and press 'ENTER'.

Note: If you're running Windows 7 and AVG anti-virus and you get a "permission denied" error, you may need to disable AVG's "Resident Shield" before this mod will install successfully.

Note: Don't worry! As with all of the mods below, you can always run the setup file again in order to change your options. So if you don't like the font size you picked, simply run the Setup-GhostDog's-PST-UI.exe again and pick a different option!

QUICK CHECK! Before moving on, try running Planescape: Torment and ensuring that it loads correctly. If it doesn't, then you need to redo the steps above before applying the patches below

There are other mods you should probably download to make the game more enjoyable, but that should fix your problem (and make the game look nicer then it did when it was released). If you need recommendations of other mods or help installing them I could do so tomorrow morning for ya. This should at least get you up and running though.

Have fun, that game is probably my favourite single player game ever. At least top 5. For sure it's my favourite RPG ever played, and I've played all the big ones.

In case you still need it. To get to the DPI thing mentioned. Open up your file explorer and go to the folder where you have your game installed. Then right click on the TORMENT.EXE file and hit properties at the bottom of the popup box.

Click on COMPATIBILITY. You can either let it do it's thing by clicking on "Help me choose the settings" there. Or you can try just choosing Windows XP service pack 3. This is where you can "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings."

When i chose WinXP it selected the DPI option for me.

You can also choose to "Change settings for all users" there if you have other user accounts on your computer that may play the game too.

Somehow this never occurred to me. Will give it a try. I did have it at the highest resolution for my monitor. Never figured it would be an issue for games.

The link on that page didn't work, but I googled it and found a working one (I think). Will give it a shot. I know very little about mods and was always paranoid about downloading them. Lol my brand-new computer that I bought to play new games but Planescape is the first one I go for. Nostalgic game that I used to watch my late-brother play when I was a kid. Now it's my turn. Bought it off GOG with all the other D&D games in January and just now getting to it. Can't wait.

I may just need more help with mods tomorrow. Thanks! :D

Perfect, I will give this a try. I didn't expect to have issues with such an old game; figured it would just work. Ah well, the work is worth it. Thanks!

OK, step 1 worked. installed Biggs widescreen mod and then Ghost Dog's mod. Took 4 tries to get everything in the right folder lol.

Makes the characters smaller (thought I may have chosen the wrong options when I set it up), but everything fits on the screen now, which is really what I wanted. Worked perfectly. Looking forward to other mods now. Watched a Youtube vid of the game with mods and it looked amazing.

And this worked too. I did this before the mod and it did just what I was looking for. Was really quite simple once I knew what to do. Thank you.
