So I couldn't even sit through a full video of any of this dude's youtube videos, but this is totally a thing for those of you who haven't heard:

http://gawker.com/the-bizarre-youtube-video-blog-of-alleged-ucsb-shooter-1581087159

It would appear that this guy thought he could just be totally into himself and would deserve female attention because of it. He even talked about girls with their revealing shorts but how he doesn't get to have the sex (???) The theory is that he went on this shooting spree (as he says in his last video) because he hadn't ever even kissed a girl even though he TOTALLY DESERVED IT, but it also seems pretty clear that he had no fucking clue how interpersonal relationships work. With this apparent lack, I would personally be amazed if anyone comes forward and even says they were friends with the guy, but that's neither here nor there.

The thing that struck me in this is that he spouts the same shit we dismiss as "trolls" in forums, while camming, on social media etc, as well as IRL dudes who feel outraged when they don't get to fuck a girl that they feel they "deserve" to. Obviously this guy's crazy goes way beyond the internet, but it reinforces the fact that some of the guys we summarily dismiss as "just trolls" could very well have some very serious mental problems.

Meh.

And the pity of it is, he had been diagnosed with Asberger's, and both his parents and social services had tipped off police, days before the shooting about the videos. They "investigated" and reported that he was "very polite."

I very much hope this doesn't further fuel a witch hunt for autistic people.

That second link is fuckin terrifying, I hope that is the extent of the deaths he's caused

Totally agree. Even Asberger's itself doesn't mean violence, but in this person's case, my only point was that this person had some major issues, and coupled with the disturbing videos, I wish he'd gotten help.

The thing is though, he did get help. The article said he was under the care of several mental health professionals. He did this out of pure hatred for women, because he felt so entitled to sex, that he MURDERED women for exercising their right to say no.

Yes. Poor wording on my part. I kind of meant by "help" a padded cell, and lots of medication. :)

Asperger's was likely not the issue. This kid seemed like a sociopath and betrayed classic signs of narcissistic personality disorder. Yes, he had Asperger's, and that likely made it difficult for him to connect with people, but that's a separate issue. People with Asperger's are rarely violent. He likely had other, more serious mental illnesses. Saying "ooh, Asperger's! There's your answer!" (I know you're not saying that, but that's the conclusion people jump to) does a disservice to the people who have that disorder and just makes life worse for them. I wish people would stop doing that.

In a strange sort of way, it's almost like he's talking about another person who he is observing--except for his mention of emotional responses to the things that happen around him. His writing seems so "sane" while he discusses to his journal his plans for a monstrous act.

http://nypost.com/2014/05/24/drive-by-s ... a-barbara/

He stabbed 3 people to death before his shooting spree.

"Attorney Shifman said the Rodger family called police several weeks ago after being alarmed by YouTube videos “regarding suicide and the killing of people” that Elliot Rodger had been posting.
Police interviewed Elliot Rodger and found him to be a “perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human,” but noted that he had few friends and no girlfriend, he added. Police did not find a history of guns."

it seems "sane" but also very flowery, like some kid on fuckin' DeviantArt writing his "eloquent" fanfic about sonic the damn hedgehog
it's like he was trying to impress the reader with his vocabulary

it is very very scary, it could have been stopped, and WHY does a 22 year old have so many weapons?? he was a white boy in california
a very very scary
white boy in california

Ugh. I just read some of the comments on that article. I feel ill. Trying to claim that this was caused by his "biological" need for sex at that age being prevented. There is some one actually arguing that maybe if people like this kid and other mass murderers like him had gotten laid they would have never been violent.

His violence stemmed from the same place that violence stems from in abusers: the need to control. Getting laid wouldn't have prevented this in any way shape or form. He would have had another reason to hate women and do this. Who knows, had he had a gf in the past and they'd broken up maybe he would have gone after her first.

Agree. I don't even think sex was what he craved that much. People probably did shun him because of his very odd behavior, and he probably tried to compensate in various strange ways which made people avoid him even more. If sex was all he craved, he may have become a rapist rather than a murderer...although I understand rape too is more about a need to control than a need for sex.

This dude had a sense of entitlement about literally everything that was so wide and unwavering that I'm surprised it was somehow able to fit in this universe. He is the ultimate special fucking snowflake.

He was so completely deluded that he apparently felt as though women should be throwing themselves at his feet just over the fact that he exists. For as much as he complained about not getting attention from women, he did NOTHING to garner it. He just sat there like a fucking crybaby waiting for all the girls to come up to him because HE DESERVES IT OMG LIFE ISN'T FAIR, and then stewed in his anger as all the men who, you know, actually approached the girls got attention.

I'm reading his entire manifesto and its fucking HORRIBLE.
His insanity and delusions stretch so far past the topic of women and sex that it's unbelievable people are still just making it out to be about women and sex.
Ugh.

Our culture has set us up for this kind of nonsense. Young men today are taught that women are a prize that comes from getting up in the morning and going through your day as a man. Surely, women aren't actually people that you have no rights to no matter who you are or what you do? Kids are underparented and overspoiled. Narcissistic behavior is considered normal or even admirable. The sickest part is that women buy into this shit as much as men do. If this guy hadn't died, there would be hordes of women at the mailbox sending love his way thinking he was a sad, misunderstood creature that they could fix.

For some reason this kid came equipped with the idea that he is better than literally every one else in the world (and I do mean literally, read his manifesto) and that all the status symbols that come with being "perfect" "fabulous" and "the best" should just fall into his lap because he deserves them. He's so amazing that he DESERVED a beautiful girlfriend and tons of money, just because.

He insulted both his father and mother because of this in his manifesto. I believe he called his father a financial failure at one point, and then blamed his mother for not remarrying someone richer so that he could benefit from the money. This kid was gifted a brand new BMW, had an expensive wardrobe, and bitched a fit when his parents were going to give the bedroom with the balcony and bathroom to his sister instead of him. What a horrrrrrible life.

I just hate that people are paying attention to this piece of shit.

There is another kid out there right now with the exact same mentality, who will see how much attention this kid got from killing people and will try to 1-up him.
Sure, there are things to be learned from reading his writings and watching his videos, but leave that to mental health professionals. Not to stupid assholes like me and the millions of people that watch TMZ.

The focus of this story should be the tragedy of the victims, the piece of shit that killed them should not have his name mentioned, his face shown on tv, nada.

Thank you. I think I'll save myself some time and take your word for it that he is batshit crazy. Crazy people do crazy shit, but we'll spend a week hang wringing over what we could've or should've done. Sure it would be great to figure out a way to keep, guns, explosive, cars and other dangerous objects out of the hands of mentally ill people with violent tendencies. But the rub is figuring out which ones are risk of violence, without stigmatizing mental ill people.

The worse school massacre in US history occurred in 1927. A former Michigan school supervisor pissed about taxes, and his wife's illness planted a huge bomb in a school. Shortly after it denoted he drove his pickup truck to the scene and denoted it to kill the rescuers. 45 people died that day and another 58 were injureid. What is remarkable is how the country reacted. Most people just shook their head and said man that dude was crazy and concentrated on helping the survivors. No congressional hearings, no weeks of media coverage, no movies and just one contemporary book.

I am not going to learn the guys name, watch his youtube videos, read his crazy poetry, or anything else. I am just going to ignore him. Tomorrow is Memorial day and there are lots of people worth remembering on that day.

But it's not only a mental health issue. That's what people need to learn from this. If it was solely a mental health issue than there would be just as many women who commit mass killings as there are men that commit them. This is not a mental health issue. This is an issue of entitlement. But instead of re-thinking about how we function as a society it's so much easier to just shrug your shoulders and say "Well, that person was sick."

Sooo, are you trying to say that the general public being made aware of the signs of severe mental health issues is a bad thing? Because that sounds like a horrible idea to me.
If only professionals were ever aware of these kinds of things, this may have turned out way worse than it did which is already really horrible.

There are so many factors at play here that we SHOULD be made aware.
I don't think there is any situation where ignorance trumps being informed.

Maybe it's a mental health issue, maybe it isn't. I could honestly care less. This guy killed innocent people, and he's now famous. People are treating him like a victim. It makes me sick.
I don't need to learn anything about him. If I read everything, and watch every video he uploaded, it will not change my life in the slightest way. I will learn nothing.

Like I said, there is another guy out there, who thinks the exact same way as this kid. He also gets to read his stuff and watch his videos. Yet that guy will relate, and see this killer scumbag as a victim and hero. It could inspire him to take action as well. I genuinely believe it should be against the law to plaster these sick fuckers faces on tv.

How is this line of thinking any different than people who want to ban books, video games, tv, movies, music, etc because theres violence in them?
Are we going to start policing EVERYTHING because it might set someone off? Should we all live in a bubble?

This is such an ass backwards solution.

I'm not saying ignore the situation. I'm saying we don't make the killer famous. I mean he killed a few people and he's on every tv in America. Doesn't that seem wrong to anyone else?

About 6900 people die in this country every day. Of those daily deaths ~30 are men murder, and 9 female victims of murder, but murder rates have been steadily decrease for a generation, whatever we are doing to decrease crimes seems to be working. In addition to the problem of encouraging copy cats, the time and energy we spend trying to figure out how to prevent future crazies from doing crazy shit is time not spent trying to decrease things which are far more deadly to young people.

Everyday about 70 peopole die of alcohol related causes, 105 commit suicide, and 110 a die of drug overdose (about an equal number of prescription and illegal drugs.) Drug ODs deaths have been increasing dramatically this century, and unless it is some celebrity dies almost no media attention is paid to it. I am sure there is a mental health issue associated with most of these drug deaths. It would nice if just a fraction of the attention and resource that this case will attract was spent on helping folks most likely to OD get treatment.

Only skimmed some of it but this stuck out to me also. He would go on walks and smile at women and seem to expect them to come flocking to him. He never even tries. He would play Warcraft and troll bb misc, he didn't even seem to attempt to go out and meet new people. He legit thought he was destined to win the lottery. He had a strange latte throwing fetish. He worked out for two weeks thinking that would make women like him. He wanted to kill his brother out of fear that he might be more successful than him. Dude was unable to accept responsibility for his own failures. The way he describes the tempur tantrums he'd throw is like a comic villian or something. Cops were so close to catching him too.

Yup. He had that attitude about everything.
The few friends that he did have he didn't have to work for, they were just dropped in his lap. He spent a lot of time talking about the "play dates" that his mom would arrange for him. When he was in school he bitched about no one noticing his extreme level of "coolness" and that everyone was too busy lost in their own worlds, never realizing that he was the one lost in his own world. It was almost like he just expected people to worship him.

The scary part is he was able to keep the depth of his insanity and his violent feelings so well hidden. He was able to fool several therapists and a team of cops that were sent to his apartment specifically to determine wether or not he was stable and a danger to anyone.

I guess it's also worth noting that he was prescribed Resperidone which is an antipsychotic but he absolutely refused to take it.
