OK, so the other day I was helping my youngest daughter with her reading, when all the sudden she comes to a pause. I figure that she must be stuck on a word, so I move in closer for a look... it was at that moment I realized her pause wasn't from being stuck on a word, because she ended up sneezing right in my face lol.
Well within a few minutes, I started to get that "sick" feeling. You know that feeling you start to get in your throat, runny nose, head ache, ect... And yup, wouldn't you know it, I've got one fierce head cold now.
Someone told me that I can "flush it out" by drinking lots and lots of water. So far, it hasn't done anything but make me have to pee every 15-20 mins.
Anyone have any remedies besides the old "plenty of liquids and rest".

one word: Buckley's!
it tastes awful but it works :)

as soon as I feel as much as a hint of a cold/cough/etc I start chugging the stuff back.
I think it's mostly in Canada, so it probably has limited availability in the states.

In those moments I take zinc supplements, even though I know that most studies say it doesn't help. It's one of the few remedies that at least a few scientific studies have supported.

Mayo clinic files it under "doesn't work", but also says it "seemed most effective taken within 24 hours" Just don't snort it: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-cond ... t-20046403

I take those, and they seem to work. I do not care if it is a placebo effect.

And also, old home remedy my nan used to do for me, at least it seemed to help ;) before you go to bed, rub your feet with vicks, a pretty thick layer and then put a pair of cotton socks on and a pair of woolen socks óver that. (so two pair) you'll sweat it all out!

My sister swears by drinking as many fluids as possible like you are already doing, but also cranking the heat up/piling on clothes so that your temp is elevated and you sweat like a pig.

A combo of aspirin and zinc taken as often as is safe, but only during the first 24 hours of symptoms is my Dad's "cure".

But I swear by bacon. I know, it sounds stupid. But I swear my colds always clear up within a day of me eating a plate of bacon. I've convinced a few friends to try it with good results. Not just a slice, and only real, fatty, pork bacon. Half a pack, minimum.

Hot toddy:

Let a teabag (you can use black, green, or herbal tea) steep in a shot of brandy and a tablespoon each of lemon juice and honey while you boil water. Ad the water and steep for the recommended time, remove the teabag and drink. This will warm you up and help you to sweat it out.
