Russian Store Recalls Toy Hedgehogs With Pink 'Holes' on Their Bellies
A chain store in central Russia has withdrawn toy hedgehogs from sale after consumers complained about pink “holes” on the stuffed animals' bellies — apertures that were designed to represent bellybuttons, but which critics said looked like female genitalia.

Ran across this article and thought it was rather interesting. It's from Feb. 9, 2012, so things may have changed by now.

U.S. Government Still Pays Two Civil War Pensions

Despite the fact that the Civil War ended April 9, 1865 (53,630 days ago, for reference), the government is still paying out veterans' pensions.

Records from the Department of Veterans' Affairs show that two children of Civil War veterans, as of September, are receiving pensions from their fathers' service.

Department of Veteran Affairs spokesman Phil Budahn says the VA last checked in on the benefits recipients in the fall. Both were alive, but in poor health.

Budahn says it's likely that the children of the Civil War veterans, who have wished to remain anonymous, both had illnesses that prevented them from ever becoming self-sufficient..

Trevor Plante, a reference chief at the National Archives says it's also possible that the beneficiaries were young when their fathers died and had no living mothers to care for them, which would also qualify them for their fathers' pensions.

Plante says unlike current times, where pensions are granted to dependents based off military service numbers or social security numbers, in the late 19th century, people had to prove their connection to a deceased veteran by sending the government evidence of their relationship. Children, parents and spouses submitted photographs, love letters, marriage certificates, diaries and gifts to prove they were eligible for pensions.

"Genealogists love pension files because you never know what you are going to get. Civil War pensions are especially fascinating because of the wide array of things people submitted as evidence."

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, only Union soldiers were eligible for military benefits. It wasn't until the 1930s that confederate soldiers began receiving pensions from the federal government. Prior to that, confederate soldiers could apply for benefits through the state they resided in.

The last verified Civil War veteran, Albert Woolson, died in 1956 at age 109. The last widow, Gertrude Janeway, died in 2003 at age 93.

Budhan says he respects the request for privacy, but would be fascinated to learn about the lives and memories of the last two people receiving pensions from the Civil War.

"I was hoping that someone would be able to talk to these folks," he says.

Josiah Zayner decided he's gonna have to science the shit out of this! — so he embarked on an extreme DIY fecal transplant.

I'm not even going to quote any part of it since it's all about shoving someone else's shit up your bum. But there's the article if anyone wants to read it.

Mum who urinated on Essex war memorial heckles war veteran in court as judge slams her actions.

A MOTHER who urinated on a British war memorial screamed at veterans telling them they had done “f*** all” during a shocking courtroom rant.

According to The Sun, jobless Kelly Martin, 42, was told to be quiet after three outbursts from the dock during statements from war heroes and their families.

The judge slammed her for showing “no remorse” as he sent her case to Crown Court saying he didn’t have enough powers to punish her.

Martin was caught relieving herself next to poppy wreaths on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, and was then caught on camera committing the same disrespectful act just a month later.

Both incidents happened during broad daylight in front of bewildered members of the public at the top of the High Street in Grays, Essex.

She was due to be sentenced at Basildon Magistrates’ Court but District Judge John Woollard said he did not feel it was “within his powers” to deal with the case.

He had to tell the defendant to “sit down and be quiet” after several outbursts, including after a victim impact statement from an offended veteran.

When Army veteran Stan Kaye read out an impact statement on behalf of offended veterans she shouted: “I don’t take no notice of that anyway.”

The statement read: “Veterans and members of the public from around the world have been very upset by Miss Martin’s actions with regards to the war memorial in Grays town centre.

“On behalf of serving and veterans of our armed forces and family members of those that war memorials were erected to remember the sacrifice that they made for our freedom and the actions of this person has upset them greatly and are all nauseated.”

As an ex-serviceman explained the sacrifices of the fallen, she screamed: “I take no notice of that, because they have done f*** all.”

Pointing to a number of aggravating features, Judge Woollard referred the case to the crown court. She was remanded in custody and will appear on September 22.

The judge said: “It’s difficult to think of something more outrageous than urinating in a public place on a memorial which is clearly designed to reflect the losses of family in the area around you in two world wars.”

Despite the shocking images previously emerging of Martin appearing to relieve herself on the monument on June 30, she denied two counts of outraging public decency.

She was found guilty on August 16 at Basildon Magistrates’ Court. She was also convicted on one charge of assaulting a paramedic and one charge of harassing him after throwing an empty glass bottle of Smirnoff vodka at his head.

PC James Shelton, a response officer from Grays, told the court he was “shocked” and “disgusted” when he spotted Martin urinating on the monument on April 13.

He was driving to an incident elsewhere in town when he got stuck in traffic and saw a crowd of 20 people looking at the cenotaph just 15 feet from his car.

PC Shelton said he saw mortified mothers and young children in the crowd looking at the memorial.

Mansfield Man Pleads Guilty To Stealing From VFW Post To Fund Internet Porn Habit

The former treasurer of the Willington Veterans of Foreign Wars post pleaded guilty Friday to emptying the post's bank accounts, mostly to fund his online pornography habit.

Frederick Brown, 72, of Mansfield, pleaded guilty to first-degree larceny for the Willington thefts, which totaled about $144,000, and third-degree larceny for stealing about $12,000 from the Vernon American Legion Post.

Of the money stolen from the Mansfield post, about $96,400 was spent on porn, authorities said.

The Vernon thefts were brought to the attention of police after Brown was charged with stealing from the Willington VFW Post, authorities said.

On Friday, in Superior Court in Rockville, Tolland State's Attorney Matthew C. Gedansky detailed how Brown stole the money and how he spent it. Brown had a plea bargain for a sentence of 10 years in prison, suspended after he serves four years, plus probation. Brown's lawyer, Brendan Putman of Rockville, will be able to argue for a lesser sentence at Brown's Jan. 20 sentencing.

According to the warrant for his arrest, Brown immediately admitted to the thefts when state police detectives went to his home last year to serve a search warrant.

"Mr. Brown said that he took full responsibility for the missing money from the Willington VFW Post, and that he was willing to do whatever was necessary to help," the warrant reads.

Brown said he received an ATM card for the post's bank accounts when he became its treasurer. At first, he said, he used the ATM to make withdrawals for groceries and other small expenses.

But in February 2014, Brown told the detectives, he began spending money to view live online videos of women exposing themselves and performing sex acts. He would use the money to buy tokens that he would use to tip the women. The more they were tipped, the more they would do for those watching via the internet. Each 900 tokens cost about $75, he said, according to the warrant.

"Mr. Brown said that he basically got 'sucked in' and continued to do it because it was fun," according to the warrant. "Mr. Brown stopped … buying tokens in September 2014 because he started running out of money, and he was worried that someone else in the post would find out."

The post's commander, Raymond Gantick, calculated the total loss at about $144,000, according to the warrant.

"Mr. Brown said he was very sorry about what happened, and he took full responsibility for his actions," according to the police warrant for his arrest. "He summarized it by saying he got hooked on the website and things got out of control."

The VFW did not usually have large amounts of money in its accounts, but had more than $100,000 after the sale of its building on Moose Meadow Road in August 2013, Gantick said.

The post discovered there was a problem in December 2014 when a $100 check to a local Boy Scout troop bounced. Gantick then went to the bank and found that the post only had $23.32 in its accounts.
