Susanna Gibson and her husband streamed on CB for tips. She is now running for a seat in the Virginia legislative house. Apparently some bozo downloaded recordings of her stream off of Recurbate and sent it to the press. I think that none of us support recurbate's ripping off of models but it also being used to create what is basically revenge porn makes it even worse.

  • Sorry to hear that.

Saw the Washington's Post article earlier, and the article is really weird.. They mention a bunch of things that took place in their shows which means the writers spent quite a lot of time watching, despite the fact that the shows were illegally recorded, which is also mentioned in their article. There's really no good reason for them to spend a few paragraphs describe their live shows

I've worked for newspaper companies in the past. They know sex sells. If you can include a whole lot of descriptive smut and justify it as news reporting they will do it.

The NY Post that broke the article is conservative and heavily pro-Republican. Their article is written as a hit piece. I read a bunch reporting on this, and in at least 2 articles they talk about the possibility of the husband being disbarred for violating CB terms of use. The Rs are really going deep on this one to attack her and her husband who was also performing with her. A source from the Virginia bar says if he took tips in exchange for performing acts, then he violated CB terms and could lose his license. I took a look at the terms, and it really does say "Requesting or demanding specific acts for tips may result in a ban from the Platform for all parties involved."

I know that area. It is a swing district but this will kill her chances of winning the seat

It is some bullshit

If she doesn't use this to figure out a way to nuke sites like recurbate from orbit then she's missing her purpose.

I’m with you on that, although I worry that it could result in politicians going too far and going after the industry in general, just for appearances.

I don’t have much faith in lawmakers to take nuanced approaches to the issues these days. Too many of them are playing to an audience that enjoys extreme rhetoric/extreme proposals.

this case already has the R-led state government going after Chaturbate for violating state age verification laws

The whole thing is probably a violation of revenge porn laws - it seems like using this stuff for political gain SHOULD fall under that

I'll be paying close attention to it for sure. But, I have little faith in anyone who wants to be in office so I won't be expecting a positive outcome.

Um how? This happened in 2022. The stupid verify age law was passed this summer.

because when state lawmakers went to the site to check it out (first time, yeah right) they had concerns about the current compliance with the age verification stuff. That's in some of the articles

As far as I am aware the only site compliant with their stupid overreach is OF. None of the others are and Pornhub isn't accessible at all with a Virginia IP address.

Stripchat just instituted some checks due to several state laws

but yes, it is overreach. I don't agree with it at all. In VA they are using this case as an excuse to go after Chaturbate if they can is my understanding

On a state level. Chaturbate is federally compliant and that matters. The worst they can do is at a state level and there are already lots of reasons to not live in Virginia. Adding one more would hurt them more than it hurts CB. Virginia doesn't get to set the laws in California.

^^ This right here!
Legally, Recurbate is the only "bad guy" in the scenario. Not the candidate, not Chaturbate, not the whistle-blower that found it and brought it to the press
Recurbate copied, archived and published content without the content creators consent.
Recurbate is the only player in the story that did anything unethical and illegal.

However, I think her "revenge porn" argument is weak at best.
Virginia State law states:
Any person who, with the intent to coerce, harass, or intimidate, maliciously disseminates or sells any videographic or still image created by any means whatsoever that depicts another person who is totally nude, or in a state of undress so as to expose the genitals, pubic area, buttocks, or female breast, where such person knows or has reason to know that he is not licensed or authorized to disseminate or sell such videographic or still image is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.
While Recurbate and their ilk are pieces of shit, proving that Recurbates intent was to coerce, harass, or intimidate the candidate is a hard-sell. Recurbate's business model of wholesale, widespread, en masse copyright violations for the sole purpose of profit is egregious and illegal and a legal case pursued on those merits would be more successful and take them offline.

That's why this quote is so on point

Instead of deflecting and blaming the 'other party' for this whole thing (I'm a democrat like her), she needs to own her past experience and use it to advocate for legal SW's rights and right to privacy from predatory platforms like Recurbate.
However, given the state of todays politics, she'll be railroaded out of the race and likely never have a platform to advocate against the real 'bad guys', which in this case are sites like Recurbate.

That just shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the site and camming in general, because what the way the information is presented would mean that 99.9% of users/models would be breaking the terms and conditions. Though it's not very clear, but I think the key words are "may" and "specific", which likely means that certain requests that violate their rules listed elsewhere in the TOS can result in a ban.

I don't disagree. But these conservative lawyers are using this one sentence in the TOS to go after the husband's ability to practice law.

I'm wondering if this was discovered due to her financial records? I.E. What is "multimedia llc" in her income records and someone went digging?

Could be. These campaigns are pretty ruthless when it comes to finding any little crumb in their opponents’ pasts that they can use against them. I guess it’s easier for them to try to disgrace an opponent than it is to, you know, actually win an election on their own merits.

Nailed it. But depending on the "crime" depends on the "punishment". Take Lauren Boebert as an example. Married her statutory rapist and is now a grandmother before the age of 40. But it's okay because she didn't have an abortion and married her abuser and her kid is pro-life so that's GREAT.

Be a female in charge of your agency and doing things that other normal everyday people are doing to make a living? BURN HER. BURN THE WITCH!

Fucking scumbags, each and every goddamn one of 'em.

Tbh she must have known this was going to happen. Not just politics but fame too.

Ofc it disgusts me that she's being shamed for this (no one should be!)

Speaking as a brit (who voted to remain in the eu) american right wing politics sure r odd af.

I strongly question Recurbate's compliance with record keeping laws. They clearly don't have the proof of ages for everyone they vaccume up.

Also the republicans are so hypocritical about this. Having totally consensual sex with your husband in the framework of a monogamous marriage is bad. But giving a handjob in the audience of an all ages musical while vaping in front of a pregnant woman is acceptable to these people.

In one everyone involved was consenting and in the other not so much.

Oh but she's about to get it. The guy is a Democrat and owns a bar that hosts drag shows.

She can try all she wants but the problem lies in that those sites are intentionally set up in places that do not honor the DMCA.

The fact that the main stream media included the Recurbate website name in those news reports suggests to me that some "influential" group is doing a hit on her, and maybe even getting their o/s cousins' business some free publicity as a bonus.

But maybe I am just too cynical....
