Another government threatening jail if you don't answer their intimate sexual questions...

That's weird that they would ask such objectionable and explicit sexual questions - would have been nice if they had said what the questions were. I've had to answer questions for security clearances about my sexual orientation, my girlfriend at the time and whether she was a foreign national, what foreign countries I'd visited in the last 10 years etc. I didn't find those questions particularly intrusive. I mean even if they ask how many times you and your wife have sex each week - as long as their ID says who they say they are (and you can ask to see the question on the sheet if you're really concerned) just answer the damn question, even if it's once a week, or 0 times a week, the surveyor seriously doesn't give a shit.

If you don't mind some government employee asking you and your wife questions like how many sexual sexual partners she's had... that's fine. A lot of people, including me, would tell them to go pack sand because it's none of their damn business. You don't see any problem that the government is threatening to fine or jail people for not answering personally intimate, private questions?

Well with me, I'm pretty much an open book. I have no problem being open about my sex life/preference/kinks or whatever. But I *DO* have a huge problem with the government sending workers to collect this info, and being able to put you in jail for refusing to answer. I know, I hear people say "well if you're not doing anything wrong, you should have nothing to hide", but that's not the point. If you let the government get this much power, where does one draw the line? The right to privacy is a basic liberty for everyone. You have to put your foot down on stuff like this, or one day you'll wake up living in Nazi Germany wondering "how did this happen?"

That guy is full of shit, I've done that survey and there was nothing objectionable in it. It was quite detailed and took about 30 minutes, but i had the right to decline to answer any question.

He's talking about the “Monthly Population Survey”

The Australian government has been conducting what they refer to as a “Monthly Population Survey” (MPS) since 1960 in order to provide regular information about the country’s workforce. However, recent complaints have revealed the questions are much more personal than how long you’ve been out of work.

Residents are randomly selected for surveys based on their address. Despite the contradictory information on the ABS website, once residents have been chosen, they’re required to participate in the invasive surveys once a month for eight months. One Aussie in particular was told the only way to get around the survey would be to change addresses.

Yahoo Australia reports in the last year that the ABS took action against 1,500 Aussies, in which 94 were referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The ABS harasses and even threatens over 350,000 homes each year. The only question residents can legally refuse to answer are questions regarding religion.

As i said, bullshit. I cannot remember any of the questions as being particularly intrusive and was told that she preferred that "I decline to answer rather than make anything up". I didn't have any trouble with the questions, we had a very friendly conversation and it was all over with in one interview. She asked I she could return and I said yes.

ACA is a rag that beats up all kinds of stories with no basis, and their source is Yahoo? 1,500 people out of 350,000 did what exactly? and 94 were referred to the director of public prosecutions for doing what? No answering questions? Assaulting the person making the surveys? Its just another of their beat ups.

Here's his profile, you can personally tell him he's full of shit.

http://au.linkedin.com/pub/chris-le-roy/25/b5/201

Here's the news show you can also contact to let them know they're also full of shit:

Today Tonight Adelaide
http://www.todaytonightadelaide.com.au/
Today Tonight Adelaide, South Australia's Leading current affairs program, 6:30pm Weekdays on Channel 7.

or here: http://au.news.yahoo.com/today-tonight/

Awww, what's the matter, no one taking you seriously? Funny how sensationalist rag in South Australia needs to do a 4 minute article on a guy in Queensland. Could it be nobody cared about this wanker or what he is claiming. One person on linkedin has recommended Chris out of the 313 that know him from his business :D sounds like a pillar of the community.

Take it or leave it, I don't give a shit what you believe, or don't. I would assume the news show that aired the segment has done at least minimal confirmation to back up their story, otherwise they're opening themselves up for lawsuits.

According to you, the former Senator on the segment is also full of shit?

Like I said, feel free to contact them about their bullshit.

Tash is awesome, and she was the national leader of the (minor) party she was in. She is well out of politics now, but even so, with her million dollar a year superanuation package and all of her contacts in government could not change the way the ABS gathers statistics? And on one will say what these offensive questions are?

You do know Australia, like most of the rest of the world, doesn't have a bill of rights? We have the right to freedom of religion and trial by our peers the rest is entirely up to the government. Even so, if I were you I'd be more worried about people going to jail for 20 years who fired a warning shot on your own country than how the ABS conducts its business in Australia.

Australians are the ones who shoud be concerned. It may not be a wide spread occurrence, but even once is too many if they are indeed doing that.

As to the warning shot case, once again, look into the FACTS about her sentencing and the reasons why she was found guilty. IIRC, she had to actually leave the scene to get the gun and then she returned armed to fire the so-called warning shot. That's a whole other thread though.
