Just to confirm, you are correct about that. It's a word that's definitely okay for African-Americans to use amongst each other... From conversations I've overheard on the street, it almost tends to be a term of slight endearment that's tacked on to the end of the sentence... similar to the way the terms "bro" and "dude" are used, and I don't know if I'm right about this... but it the observation I've made (if someone has a differing opinion on this let me know, I'm just sharing observations because I'm a language nerd and if I'm wrong I'd like t be corrected) is that seems like it's a term that's much more often tacked on to a sentence directed at a male rather than a female.
