And yet 41 years later we're still talking about Linda Lovelace. Seems like 'household name' has been confirmed.
That is not what I said, nor was I disputing that she was a household name.. Kim Kardashian & Justin Bieber (to name 2) are household names. Only history will tell if they will be icons, but I think not (IMO) ;)

I've never seen a camscore climb so quickly. :D I'm glad Jenna's on MFC! She has a huge fanbase and will probably bring tons of new traffic to the site. And those guys don't have their lives timed up perfectly with Jenna's schedule!

I'm sure the new guys she brings to the site will log on when she's off and wander around checking out other models that they like. Some of the biggest tippers I've seen tip a LOT of different girls... So I just don't understand why anyone can think this is a bad thing for other girls.

I think she started at a 10k camscore. Regardless, that is still quite some movement.

I agree it will only be a good thing for other models as it will drive traffic to MFC. Once the novelty and newness wears off, I can guarantee the numbers will level off. In all the time I have been on MFC some famous porn stars have come and gone and in the end they do not want to do the work that is involved to stay in the top echelon MFC models.
She started at 1k like everyone. I saw her rise to about 2600 after an hour.

I wish people would stop thinking that since she's a porn star she started at a higher camscore. It's not true, it's just a rumor.

I hope that is the case because it was not true in the past. All known stars started at 10k. I was also going by MyCamgirl.net is the reason I thought they might have started her at 10k.

It takes into account the last known camscore of the day. You don't see the initial camscore because she finished her first day on cam with a camscore of 13722.100. But she did start at 1000.

Code:
2013-09-10 01:16:00 1000.000 > 2763.300
2013-09-10 11:11:22 2763.300 > 8329.500
2013-09-10 11:31:49 8329.500 > 8346.500
...
2013-09-10 21:03:35 10741.200 > 10746.100
2013-09-10 22:34:32 10746.100 > 12878.800
2013-09-10 23:28:39 12878.800 > 13722.100

She already got a "Double or nothing" badge for jumping from 2763.300 to 8329.500.

Just out of curiosity, if she finishes the month in top 20, she will become the fastest girl to make top 20. The current record belongs to ChloeLamb (her old account) who finished in top 20 (#10) 26 days after joining MFC.

There is certainly room for more than one icon in porn. Names like Lovelace and Chambers are definitely on the same level of recognition as Jenna Jameson, if not more so, as would be personalities like Christy Canyon, Nina Hartley, John Holmes, Traci Lords, Annie Sprinkle, and of course, the Hedgehog himself, Ron Jeremy. All of those are names that were easily learned by people who weren't all that into porn and its subculture, even before the internet was a thing.

I think that the idea of who fits the list of "porn icon" in this case is a generational thing. I think it could be broken down into three recent classifications: the "film generation" of the 60's and 70's, the "home video generation" of the 80's and 90's, and the "digital generation" of the mid-90's to now. Each generation is going to have their icons. All of the names I've listed above were already legendary by the time I was getting into erotica in the early 90's. If you were born in the late 80's or early 90's, that means that you'd start looking at porn by the early 00's, and most of those who I've mentioned above would have moved on and been replaced by the next generation of stars, like Jenna Jameson. Unless you were a really eclectic teenager who was into retro skin films, I just don't think that the hall of famers of decades prior are really going to be on your radar.

Betty Page was before all of those, but I'm going to use my brain just a wee bit and guess that Jolene meant household name who was in charge of her own business enough for girls in the adult industry to tip their hat to her. I don't think the word "role model" is especially appropriate in business, but it's cool to give credit where credit is due. Jenna Jameson held on in an industry that throws most women out after 5 years. She has her own line of toys. She has her own video company. She's a best-selling author. She made porn her bitch and got rich while tons of other women got chewed up and spit out. She's a porn unicorn.

To be sure, but she really isn't the only person ever to pull that off, and she wasn't the first. It is absolutely rare for it to happen, though.

I am probably not expressing myself very well. Of course, the folks you mentioned are "porn icons". No doubt about that, and there are plenty more that fit that bill. I did not intend to dis any of the folks you mentioned.

My point was that Jenna has become a "cultural icon" (at least in the US), due to her crossover into the main steam media. NYT best seller author, her business success, her ability to get into the main stream media spotlight whenever she wants (and when she doesn't want), etc. Ron Jeremy fits that due to his longevity, and his crossover to main stream media. Kim K and Biebs fit that right now (cultural icons, not porn, lol), but will they remain there years after they stop performing.

Examples abound in other fields. In sports, Babe Ruth was a cultural icon. He crossed over into all media of the day, including movies. Ted Williams was "merely" a baseball icon (merely, lol). Michael Jordan is another example. Time will tell if LeBron will make it to that level or if he will have to settle for being the best basketball player on the planet (tongue in cheek ;) )

Sorry if my early post was confusing, it was not my intention to slight the performers you mentioned ;) And of course, this is just my opinion.

I saw this a few days ago and didn't pay much attention until last night when Jenna's cam comeback was a topic of discussion on the SiriusXM "Radio Sex" network while driving home. At that point, I suspected she chose MFC, or broadcasting from her own site. Looks like I was right on the MFC part, though she still hasn't appeared on my MFC home page.

Admittedly, Jenna [Jameson] has never been my "type." When she was last active in the business, I would have been more interested in Jenna Haze or Stoya. And on MFC, I'll be more likely to watch Amber or KayleePond. That's what I like about watching cams. There's a performer online for just about every taste and kink out there, and I'm happy I've discovered several models that appeal to mine.

Overall, Jenna will be a great addition to MFC. She'll bring in the gross to cover Leo's cost of paying for the metro Ethernet and some new servers. She'll also bring the pervs who will be looking for more after she logs out, and there will be plenty of ACF models to welcome them with group and private opportunities they'll want, but likely won't be worth Jenna's time. Even the pervs visiting just for the novelty or those leaving her room less-than-impressed can benefit other models who may be more their style. If this were TV, it would be like getting the time slot on CBS immediately after The Big Bang Theory. Sometimes, having the right lead-in fuels success.

Oh, thank you! Thank you thank you thank YOU!
And schlmoe too. You nailed my point EXACTLY! Ron Jeremy can't even hold up to her "level" of mainstream recognition in my opinion because he is know as being gross and distasteful. Jenna became a mainstream household name because she showed there was class, brains and business sense behind the "bimbo". She's not just famous for being in porn, she's famous for being a boss ass bitch in porn. THAT is the difference.

Lovelace, Lords, Page... NONE of them did anything close to that. They did not help to make porn more understood and respected in mainstream society as a business... they are and were famous scandals.

Not to beat a dead horse, but Linda Lovelace was FAR more of an icon than Jenna Jameson in her day. Her name was basically shorthand for porn at a time when it was actually common for "respectable" people to go out and see Deep Throat, etc. Johnny Carson had her on his show, and Bob Hope used to make jokes about her by name. Hell, Woodward and Bernstein nicknamed their Watergate source "Deep Throat" precisely because the movie and its star were household names. She was about as mainstream as you can get. Little old ladies knew who she was; I doubt very many know who Jenna is today. It's not a competition, but to claim that Jenna Jameson is/was anywhere even remotely in the same UNIVERSE as popular and mainstream as Lovelace was in 1972-74 is just incorrect.

Now I'll agree that TODAY (and for the past 20 years), Jenna is the most famous female porn star. But come on, why the revisionist history, folks? It's not like it takes away from your point to note that Jenna was NOT the first, and not the most famous. You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

I completely agree with this. My freshman year in college they showed Deep Throat on campus in one of the main auditorium. Now this was Berkeley, and not Texas bible college, but still it was just extraordinary to see a porn film anywhere outside the red light district anywhere in the country even in the late 70s. Playboy had been doing poll and most woman had never given or received oral sex in their life in the 70s, so to see that on screen was unprecedented. Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems brought porn into the the mainstream and popularized blow jobs   . There needed to be a Linda to set the stage for Jenna to be considered a successful businesswoman/porn star and not just a porn star.

I'd say it worth contemplating that both Linda and Jenna later turned their back on the industry, although in Jenna case maybe not permanently.

ALSO, a bunch of people have said they witnessed first hand that she started at 1000 (I saw her right at the start of the first day and she had a score in the 1000's) so I would say it's not even a question anymore. We know the way camscore works and it makes complete sense that her score is enormous now!

Yep, her score was well under 1500 when I was first alerted to her presence. (I think it was around 1200-1300, but I don't remember exactly what it was.)

Exactly. I guess it can be hard to comprehend social forces that came a generation or two before one was even born. To say that nobody is as big as Jameson is now is correct. To say that nobody has ever been as big as she is now is incorrect. I wouldn't be surprised if she's made the most money of anyone in porn, though.

I think the perception has to do with age. The younger people are thinking Jenna because that's who they've known most of their lives. Older people have the perspective of Lovelace.

If you think about it even at the time Traci Lords, mentioned in a prior post, was the biggest around. She actually did it rather smart. Yes most of her movies were underage and pulled from the shelves now, but at the time it happened she had put herself in a position to make her own porn movie and keep the lion's share. That ONE movie she produced just happened to be made right after she turned 18 and 'someone' mysteriously tipped off the authorities so all her previous ones would get pulled and the buzz would be at an all time high. Then that movie hit shelves. At the time there was no more household name in porn than Traci Lords.

And she parlayed that notoriety to become a legitimate post-porn Hollywood crossover.

I don't think we're experiencing an age gap here. The REASON that Linda Lovelace, Betty Page, Traci Lordes, John Holmes and Ron Jeremy are household names is the fact that they did NOT do anything to make their industry better. They are what people expect and are comfortable thinking of when they think of porn. Jenna is a household name because she was successful. You can get hung up on bullshit, pointless words like "icon", but you can't deny that in her chosen field (whether you like her field or not) she is a success. No one gets into porn saying "Someone get me a dog and an abusive dude to take all my cash. I am going to Lovelace all over this joint!". Hehehe.

Sidenote: If someone did help make a path for Jenna, it was obviously Nina Hartley. :geek:

Linda Lovelace's biggest personal accomplishment was actually quite hurtful to the industry, since she headed an anti-porn movement.

What Jicky said.

I think people have not been discussing this not based on apples and apples. More like apples, oranges, bananas, strawberries, cantaloupes and possibly kumquats. Household name, icon, empire builder, what has been done for the industry, role model, etc.

I haven't really seen any faults in any of the posts based on the posters perception of what the topic is.

My previous post was strictly on the idea that Jenna was the "first and only household name". Not icon. Not empire builder. Not as someone who furthered the industry. Not as a role model. Not as someone to be admired. Not as anything other than a household name.

And yes, there is a generational thing there. As well as a semantics game going on.

That is all. Carry on.

What Jicky said.

No the reason Linda was famous is the first sentence in her wiki entry or her NY Times obit.
Linda Susan Boreman (January 10, 1949 – April 22, 2002), better known by her stage name Linda Lovelace, was an American pornographic actress who was famous for her performance in the enormously successful 1972 hardcore porn film Deep Throat
In the 70s all of her anti porn work was in the future. Nobody would have cared about her anti porn work if she hadn't done Deep Throat first.

It seems to me that Jenna's comment. " she will no longer “spread her legs again” at the AVN awards" isn't particular helpful either. But even if Jenna spends the next 20 years trying to ban porn, she'll still be most famous as being a super successful porn star, which brought porn to a wider audience and showed that porn stars could cross over.

Finally, it seems to while the porn industry is much better than it use to be, there is enormous room for improvement in how the industry treats both its performers and its customers. Whatever harm Linda, or Jenna, or Traci did to the industry pales in comparison to the sleaze practices which are sadly still pretty common which really hurt the industry. Most of what they have complained about needed to be said.

Most definitely. She's been at it for 30 years, and she has done it right. She's whip-smart, charming, articulate, and incredibly sex-positive, even for a sex worker. She has evolved with the times, and managed to keep herself fresh and relevant within the industry, and at 54, she's still bangin' hot. She is the one porn star I would love to meet.

If anybody is interested in the phenomenon that was Linda Lovelace/Deep Throat, you should watch the documentary "Inside Deep Throat," which really focuses on how the movie impacted society. All the bad shit that happened with Linda Lovelace happened/was revealed later. That doesn't make her influence any less important. As somebody noted, many Americans didn't even know what a blowjob *was* before that movie. There simply would be no Jenna Jameson, and no MFC, without Deep Throat.

Not that it's a good movie. It's pretty stupid and gross.

In my own personal opinion, I like JJ...She has aged a lot and looks quite different..hence the fact why I wasnt able to distinguish, if it was really her...But all and all, I like her personality and I like the fact that she is coming on and talking to her fans. Now would I spend money on her? Probably not, but I only spend money on selected models or ones that make you feel welcome in their room...and hve a good attitude. I personally do not think that it's hurtful to other models--Like I read on this thread somewhere else, it will fade away, she will have her follows and certain group of guys in her room, but when the "newness" factor of "omg, JJ is on mfc" dies down it wont be such a big hype and besides, she doesn't fit all men's categories...Can all the hater models just pipe down now, please? Relax.

Jolene has the benefit of that being her nickname which makes the confusion more natural. I'm just ridiculous.
