Hi all,

I need some really basic information on Snapchat, I've googled, watched youtube tutorials, and I don't understand why it's taking me so long to grasp how it works.

What is Snap Chatters who've added me? - I've created an account using a private email and I've found people in my contact list started adding me. I deactivated the option for people to find me by my phone number but these contacts are still there? I am annoyed they now know my private email address.
I don't understand the box next to their name, I tap it and get the tick and become friends with them, I then freak out and block them.
So i deactivated that account and started again, I am yet to enter my phone number for fear of it popping up on other peoples phones.
How does the friend adding system work? I am concerned about people from real life finding me.

How do you share with members on MFC?

Do you give them your username and they add you, then you tick the box next to their name?
If I don't check the box next to their name, they can still send me snaps?
Meaning you need to add and then block everyone who adds your name on snap chat that you don't wish to snap with?
I am so embarrassed I can't get this, I feel like an elderly person who doesn't understand technology.

First, do NOT attach your phone number to your Snapchat account. It is not necessary and will try to automatically add people from your contacts who have Snapchat. Similarly, make sure the email address you use is ONLY associated with camming and has NO TIES to your personal, private life.

Next you should click on the gear to get to the "Settings" page. Once there, go down to "Who can..." and change "send me snaps" and "view my story" to "my friends". That way even if your Snapchat name gets shared (it does happen!) you won't get a bunch of people who can see your story for free, or a bunch of random dick pics you didn't ask for.

Snapchatters can only add you if they know your username. When someone adds you, click on the box by their name to add them back-- now they are your friend, and they can send you snaps and view your story. As I said, sometimes your username might get shared with people who did not pay for it-- it is very important that you make sure you know who you are adding before you click the box near their name.

As far as sharing goes, when someone tips for my Snapchat name I send them a PM or an MFC mail telling them my Snapchat username, and ask them to tell me theirs so I can add them. If you want you can simply ask for their name and add them and hope they will know it's you.

Another piece of advice to to make your Snapchat name different from what you use on camsites, so people can't just look you up by that. If your cam name is "amorousgirl" that should NOT be your Snapchat name; you can make it something similar (like "girl.amorous" or "AGsnaps" or something) or you can make it entirely different, which is what I did. There have been girls who get a bunch of random friend adds because their cam name is the same as their Snapchat username which is what you want to avoid.

Aw, Lily! So the "LilyEvansSnapchat4U" that I've been Snapping with wasn't you? :crybaby: Come to think of it, it was strange that they would only send dick pics to me!

Totally kidding, but Lily's right. Make your username something unique to deter people from randomly adding you. And I thought I would reiterate the "not adding your real phone number" thing. Download a texting app where you get a fake number. This can be GooglePlus, TextPlus, or something similar. Type THAT number into Snapchat when signing up. And if it ever asks (or tells) you that it will add your contact list, DECLINE DECLINE DECLINE.

I don't think you even HAVE to use any phone number-- at least I never did? There's absolutely no phone number associated with my Snapchat account, although I signed up many months ago.

Correct. I use snapchat on a tablet. There is no phone number that can be entered. Which is another way to really add security if anyone is worried. Around $140 for a 7 inch Asus MeMo tablet. It can do everything and every app your phone can without linking it to your phone number. Create a work gmail address. Log in to the tablet with that. No chance of cross linking family contacts at all. Just use it for camming and it's about the easiest way to separate any possibility of mixing the two up.

Thank you so much Lily! Coincidentally I had made my username something different, only in case I accidentally added family again!
I finally understand, yay. :)
