Re: Shark Week Scandal!

Amber claims she loves Shark Week, but I am sad to report she strayed to less factual shark based infotainment in a moment of weakness. I even have photographic proof of it too!

So much for feeling safe from predator sharks in a decent sized boat. :?

The start to shark week on Discovery they showed a quasi "documentary" about Megalodon. It was as bad as the Mermaids "documentary" that the animal planet showed. Does anyone else remember a time when Discovery actually showed real science and not just a bunch of reality shows? It was a great channel at one time. :crybaby:

I think this rating story explains all you need to know about why Discovery does what it does.

Discovery Channel's 26th edition of "Shark Week" kicked off Sunday night with the highest ratings in the history of the annual shark-related programming week.

The Sunday night airing of "Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives," grabbed 4.8 million viewers, making it the single most-watched "Shark Week" episode to date. The premiere episode of "Shark After Dark," the channel's "Talking Dead"-style shark-related talk show grabbed a respectable 2.1 million viewers.

Discovery has boosted its programming for this year's edition, with 11 new shark specials, up from eight the previous year. The "Shark After Dark" program is another new addition.

Ratings for "Megalodon" were up 141% in the 25-54 demographic versus the same time period during last year's "Shark Week."

No doubt the Discovery Channel folks have DISCOVERED how stupid our TV watching culture has become... all they seem to do now is inject ridiculous doses of drama no matter how foolish and scripted it comes off.

By far, the hardest I've laughed during any shark week segment was while watching the fat guy named (Blimp?) swim to the shark cage.

There is not much doubt why they do it, but do we think it will eventually bite them in the ass? There appears to be some backlash in the social media sphere but whether it will do anything to change their programming is doubtful if their number continue to be good. It will be interesting to see after the controversy with Megalodon if the numbers drop off the rest of the week compared to previous years.

Don't do it if you can't back it up

It's not really an issue of "can't". More "didn't think I needed to".

I was alluding to the dumbing down of things being a result of dumb things being more palatable to the masses than non-dumb things. The dumber something is, the more likely it is to be consumed by people. This is why so much shit gets aired on television. We can't have nice things (in this instance, television that isn't dumbed down) because less people will watch than if things are dumbed down.

That's why we can't have nice things.

Haha. Jebus, Boce. It was a flippant comment alluding to the dumbing down of television. If I'd have known you were going to take it personally, I wouldn't have taken the time to make it. Do you work for Discovery Channel or something?

Flippantly glib went out the proverbial window when there was a leader I believed in was in charge, or you made me laugh.

Angry troll speech seems to the rule now...whether it's appropriate or not. This thread started out nice enough and like so many threads...even those that you start yourself with good intentions, you've turned into a pile of shit swarming with flies.

Might I suggest Odoul's for a few days until you get your head on straight?

I remember when there was only ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, and KTLA when we lived in LA.
Summer there was only reruns and sports.

Plus I had to walk 5 miles to school, in the snow uphill both ways
