I am not sure when prequals to movies began, I can remember that jaws have 5 I think but there comes a time when the first one is good enough. One of my favorite movies , thirteen ghost's never had a prequal.

Prequel = set before the events of the first film(s). Example, the 3 Star Wars movies that came out from 1998-2006.

Sequel = set after the events of the first film. Example, Just about any film with a 2 or 3 after it. You mentioned Jaws. Jaws 2, 3D, and The Revenge were all sequels to the original Jaws.

yeah sequels (to me) kinda fall into three categories:

1. Unrelated cast and crew trying to make a buck off a successful first film (American Psycho 2, Starship Troopers 2) - interestingly both based off books that didnt have sequels

2. Films that were envisaged as a finite set, or grew into a finite set that had a fairly cohesive storyline, cast etc (Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, to some extent James Bond)

3. And then films where the first one or two or three might have been pretty successful, and might even have been pretty good, but later ones are just rolled out once every year or two to make a few bucks at the cost of the franchise's credibility (Police Academy 6, Jaws 5, Saw umm..fifteen?) Like cmon. In all those film sequences the story was done to death (except police academy which never had one). In some, like Saw it was even done after the main villain died, Jaws I've only seen the first but what is it like 5 different sharks?

For me second case is great, more than great if the first film was good and the quality is consistent. 1st and 3rd instance actually make me angry, because there are MORE than enough great stories that haven't been told or haven't been told well, that they don't need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars making trash that rehashes the same tired old premise.

My two fave sci-fi horror flicks of all time are having prequels made. One is The Thing. For those familiar with this movie, the prequel is going to tell the story of what happened to the Norwegian camp before the original movie.

I'm not looking forward to this at all. One of the most chilling scenes from The Thingwas their exploration of the Norwegian camp and the fact that we never find out what exactly happened there was a great plot point that just heightened the dread. Overally, this sounds pretty sketchy. I think I'd rather have an actual remake than a prequel. Or hell, even a sequel. To be released later this year.

I have much higher hopes for the Alien prequel. Called Prometheus, it's being directed my Ridley Scott and will star Noomi Rapace from the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It'll take place 30 years before the events in Alien and has a pretty massive budget and Avatar's 3D team working on it. To be released next year.

Another example of to many sequels to a movie is screem 4. If the first one was supposed to be scary, they really failed. It is more like the board game, Clue. Anyway, It is better as a comedy thriller than anything else.

Scream 1 scared the living fuck out of me for years, I don't think they failed.

Scream 1 succeeded for me on many levels - mainly because I do not like horror films. I loved that film (for entertainment). Some snappy "pop culture" dialogue, generating some suspense or scariness without gore or grotesque "how much fucking sick shit can be pile into a film" and one or two genuine "jump" moments and surprise as I didn't know who'd done it.

However Scream 2 wasn't that good, and Scream 3 was dire...so yes, too many sequels. It's Hollywood - taking an existing formula that was popular and worked and re-using it is a safe way to generate profits with minimum risk.

I refuse to watch Saw, Hostel or any of those as I know what to expect. Horror through horrific visuals and disturbing images. Yuck! They don't need scripts or dialogue, hence why they can just keep churning them out. People pay to see it simply to see sick fucked up stuff! My type of "horror" film has therefore been the likes of "Let the right one in" (Swedish film, excellent excellent film - there is a US remake, called Let Me In) and a "B" movie Devil (I say B because it's not great, and arguably more thriller/suspense category).

Just my opinion :D

As for sequels overall - it is mainly cash driven these days, rather than being due to limits of film/time in telling a full and rich story.
As for prequels - when the film doesn't lend itself to a sequel, a prequel is a way to generate cash. Fairly modern phenomena i think - perhaps last 15 years?

I am contractually obligated to like Star Wars films...and I hate the Star Wars Prequels.
Hate Them.
They are stupid, make little to no sense, have horrible dialogue and plots - and the overreliance on digital effects makes everything look "Fake".
Compare that to the original versions of the Star Wars films where everything was made by hand, they had model spaceships and real sets--and even though the effects may not be as "slick" as the newer Star Wars films, the had a reality to them that is missing from most modern movies.
Friends and family bought the Star Wars Prequel DVDs for me when the Episode III DVD came out, I watched them all once--and have not watched them since. Not once in five years.

But, then again I really don't like Prequels of any kind--they rob the drama from most stories.
In most films, half the drama is discovering a secret from the past--if you make a prequel, it is defeated on two fronts:
1-If you watch the films with the Prequel first then the original film, the secret of the original film is ruined.
2-If you watch the Prequel after you watch the original film, then there is no real surprise, because you know how it's going to eventually end up.

I have one more problem with Sequels, Prequels and Remakes: They are not new ideas.
I am tired of people mining the same things over and over again, simply because they are a known Brand Name.
I like new stories that I haven't seen before--that's how you stimulate people's imaginations.

(Steps down off his soapbox)

I do not mind sequels or a trilogy if they are done right and have a continuation to the original film and now just a sequel for the sake of trying to milk out even more money than the first did by itself.

Godfather II which is practically a prequel and sequel at the same time, Rocky I-IV do a proper job telling the story of a boxing career of Rocky and could have and should have ended there. Lords of the Rings, Star Wars were necessary to have three films and do a phenomenal job telling the story. I believe Aliens is better than Alien. Who can complain of Tron Legacy? Not this man.

There are a lot more cases of sequels being bad and unnecessary but even more so are prequels and remakes to movies already done especially when the remakes have so many changes made that its not a remake its a totally different movie with the same title. Prequels are tough because in some cases you are trying to find a younger actor that looks like and can act like the character from the original film. Can anyone give an example of a proper prequel?

Prometheus trailer.

Lord of the Rings, those three movies were shot at the same time. So I don't consider them sequels. It just took 3 films to tell the story.

The Hobbit movie, I think there will be 2 but like LotR its just split to tell a complete story, in a way will be a prequel.

Prometheus is a prequel that I think will enhance Alien. And I can't wait to see it.

Star Wars - *sigh* If I ever met George Lucas I think I would kick him in the jimmy for ruining my fav villain of all time. Takes a James Earl Jones talking badass and turns him into a sniveling whining fuck head . If you wanna see some good star wars prequel stuff watch the Clone Wars cartoon, that is some good shit.

The Fast and The Furious is one of those kinda rare "franchises" that got better as it went. I think 5 was the best one yet followed by the Tokyo one, just cause it was different. They are making a 6th which from the sounds of it will be as good as 5.

I don't mind sequels or prequels, its a business and you gotta make that $$$ so. The only thing that I find kinda funny is, the prequels always have way better looking tech stuff lol

But remakes or reboots? Ugh so over them. Most suck but not all. The Hulk was redone then sequeled/rebooted? and then rebooted? again for The Avengers? Very confusing. But it seemed to get better. Conan the Barbarian not so much lol. But I have high hopes for the Mad Max remake just cause Tom Hardy is Max =) I would like to see Blade Runner remade with the FX we have now, just for the visuals. I love the original tho so if it never happened that's fine too.

I've liked each Transformers sequel better than the previous one (liked the 3rd more than the 2nd, and the 2nd more than the 1st).

As far as the Rocky movies (There is 1 - 5, and the 6th one is called 'Rocky Balboa')...my favorites are Rocky III and IV. :thumbleft:

As for the Saw movies, my favorite is probably the one where the guy 'playing the game' was a husband/father seeking vengeance for the death of his son (got hit by a car). I'm almost positive that was SAW III.
