While vacationing on the Big Island of Hawaii, years ago, we notice there were hundreds, maybe thousands of feral cats at The City of Refuge park (Puuhonua O Honaunau). While eating lunch facing the ocean, we noticed a noise behind us--a couple dozen cats had formed a semi-circle around us, and when we looked at them, they began begging (meowing) for food. Yeah, we tossed a few bits of chicken toward them which they rapidly made disappear.
Later, talking to one of the park rangers, he volunteered that they mostly ignored the cats (also the dozens of mongoose living side by side with the cats--they apparently used different hours to do their thing). Then he told us that when the population became out of hand, they'd take a few days randomly shooting the cats and mongoose to get their populations "in line." We were kind of horrified at the time, being a family of cat lovers.
Anyway, it's not just eastern Europe that has dumb ways of dealing with feral or stray animals.
This was years ago, so I hope they've come up with better ways...like neutering and spaying.
