Recent Netflix watches that were worth recommending

Wetlands
Freaks and Geeks (finally finished it and now watching it again cos I loves it)
Bob's Burgers
Gilmore Girls
The Young and Prodigious TS Spivet
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Kingdom of Dreams and Madness
Atari: Game Over
Garfunkel and Oates

Not sure if it's been mentioned before but...

I watched Hits today. Would highly recommend if boredom arises. Also, it seems like they only launched it as available to be torrented online and it's a film about... online stuff and social media and things like that.

The Babadook.

Terrifying!

Much like The Exorcist which, altho slightly dated, I still find horrifying.

Thanks Gween for my insomnia

Nightcrawler (Canadian Netflix) - Stylishly shot commentary on 21st century news dissemination with a pretty unnerving and convincing performance from Jake Gyllenhaal.

St Vincent (French Netflix) - Bill Murray is amazing. He pretty much plays a softened version Henry Chinaski. The film kinda gives over to sentimentality in the final third, but it's well-earned sentimentality. Naomi Watts is great too (and nearly unrecognisable) as the pregnant Russian prostitute.

The Babadook (American Netflix) - Creepy for all the reasons you'd expect but legitimately scary for reasons you wouldn't necessarily figure going in.

Sense8

new netflix original series, brought to you by J. Michael Straczynski, the genius behind Babylon 5, and the Wachowski's, best known for The Matrix.
(the following slightly edited from wiki) the story of eight strangers: Will , Riley , Capheus, Sun , Lito, Kala , Wolfgang and Nomi , each individual from a different culture and part of the world. While living their everyday lives they suddenly have a vision of the violent death of a woman called Angel and find themselves reborn as Sensates; otherwise normal human beings who are mentally and emotionally connected, being able to communicate, sense, use each others knowledge, language and skills. While trying to both live their lives and figure how and why this connection happened and what it means, a mysterious man named Jonas possessing the same ability tries to help the eight and protect them from another stranger called Whispers who is similarly empowered and is hunting them down to tap into their psychic link and capture them all.

it starts off slow, but the pay off is worth it, so stick with it.
envisioned as a 5 year series and completely planned out as such, so I expect the following seasons to only get better (if renewed), just as B5 did

tl dr
watch it.

Echoing Crumb and Liora...Sense8 is fabulous. It needs some kind of "do not ingest hallucinogenic substances and then watch this" warning or something. I spent a really weird night trying to figure out how I would be fundamentally changed as a person if I could somehow witness my own birth, and I was mostly sober.

I'm mainlining Grand Hotel right now. It's like Downton Abbey, but better because there's more sexual tension and murder and stuff. The clothes are gorgeous and the main female character (Alicia) is preternaturally beautiful. Also, forbidden love, scandal, all the other stuff associated with period dramas.

The Source Family is good if you like cults. Not in a "I love and am interested in joining a cult" way, but in a morbid fascination-type way. Full disclosure, probably would have joined it if I'd been ~20 at the time. I don't even have an excuse, part of me is just The Worst.

Four Rooms is an older Tarantino movie but maybe the best? It's hilarious and weird and has Tim Roth and Antonio Banderas in it (?). A bellboy at a hotel has to deal with murder, bratty kids, BDSM, and the best bet ever.

(I'm terrible at synopses, sorry :/)

It's an anthology, so technically only 1/4 a Tarantino movie. Each room was written and directed by a different person. "The Missing Ingredient" (the witches) was written and directed by Allison Anders, "The Wrong Man" (the kinky roleplay) was written and directed by Alexandre Rockwell, "The Misbehavers" (the bratty kids) was written and directed by Robert Rodriguez, and "The Man from Hollywood" (the bet in the penthouse) was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino.

It is definitely a fun movie, and indicative of the "take chances" vibe Miramax had going for it in the 90s. I think time has been kind to it, and it has held up well as a cult favorite.

Anyway... don't know why I went full geek over Four Rooms, of all movies. I guess I just like the idea of people having some fun with film.
