Re: Neighbor told me his Pit Bull will kill my cat. In my y

What exactly should I say to the police? I almost feel like they'll tell me that I need to call animal control and that they won't take it seriously.

If you feel that there is no way to work things out with your neighbor, then I'd just call and say that you would like to report what your neighbor said and when, then ask politely if an officer could let your neighbor know about what could happen if their dog attacked your pet on YOUR property. If they say they can't/won't do anything, then say you'd still like to file a report so it can at least be documented. That way, they will know you're serious and possibly send an officer out to your neighbor's place.

Wow...this is a really shitty situation. I'm curious about what Animal Control is going to say. Doesn't he know that he is putting his dog in danger, too? What if a cat runs across the street, or a cat is on/near a person and the dog is in full rage-mode? So many scenarios come out of animals being off leash.

If it comes time to where you need to bring your cats indoors for good then don't fret! All of my cats are indoor only sans the walks on leashes and they are extremely well adjusted. So IF that is what you end up having to do then feel free to message me any time! My house is literally set up to give my cats tons of stimulation and I have lots of tips/tricks to keep them from getting bored :h: But, this is IF, so I'll hold off for the verdict.

Hmm, I didn't think about calling the non-emergency police line.

My neighbor woke me up again this morning with her. This is getting ridiculous. I don't understand why you'd let your dog outside (especially an aggressive one) off leash to go to the bathroom because obviously you aren't going to be able to control them when they go into a frenzy if seeing something they want to attack. If I had a fence, I'd let Mishka off-leash but I don't, so even him going to the bathroom will be on-leash.

As long as you're calling the non-emergency line (unless it escalates into an emergency), you'll get someone who has the time to take you seriously. I've done this pretty often with animal related things (animals left outdoors without water/shelter, people who've moved and left pets) and I've never had anyone react as though I shouldn't be calling them. Since this involves an aggressive animal and your property, they will listen. Make sure they get a report. The more a situation is documented, the better your position. If an aggressive pet is not being properly leashed, it is a public safety issue.

Re: Neighbor told me his Pit Bull will kill my cat. In my y

Just called the non-emergency line. They said they will have a deputy call me back soon.

She kind of acted like it wasn't a big deal, though. "Have you talked to him about it?" After I told her that he came up to my door and told me point blank his Pit Bull will kill my cat in my own yard. Though, I tried to emphasize the fact that I have two nephews under a year old who will be playing outside with the cat and if his dog charges at my cat, he could easily hurt/kill my baby nephews by accident.

She filed it in the system and just said that a deputy will call me back but that I can call animal control tomorrow morning. So I dunno : / Regardless, I'm going to ask the deputy to go and tell my neighbors the consequences of their dog attacking my cat/family on my property and try to get animal control out here to deem the dog "dangerous" so that he has to either fence/restrain and take out insurance on him.

Whelp, the deputy pretty much told me that I just need to contact animal control in the morning. I mean, at least it is filed, but I'm just worried that animal control won't do anything since nothing has happened yet.

I wondered if this might happen... the attitude of police in rural area is often similar to this. If animal control won't do anything there's a few routes you can go down.. so keep us posted.

I am a HUGE advocate of Pitter Bully faces and this owner makes me so sad and angry! Grrrrr, I want to punch him in the junk!
Ugh, I'm sorry Blue. As a person who has owned a fighting rescue pit bull who was dog aggressive I know it's really not that hard to be smart and responsible with that animal and still offer them a full life. The dog will not give 2 shits about going to the bathroom on a long tether. Ugh, it just shows zero responsibility or care! For your kitty or his own dog! doesn't he know his irresponsibility could result in not only the loss of your kitties life but his own dog! Rawr!!!!!
Here's to hoping animal control does something.

That is craziness. Why should they get away with being too lazy to their job.

Re: Neighbor told me his Pit Bull will kill my cat. In my y

I think everyone has posted great advice and ideas, I just wanted to say until you can get this taken care of please be super careful with your cat, and even when you get your puppy. I would be so sad if I read that this bad pet owners negligence cost an animal it's life. It's sad because I think situations like this typically aren't ALL the aggressive animals fault. Granted their are animals who are born with a not so great tempermant it's not always the animal owners fault that they have an animal that's aggressive in certain situations. Some people are second homes for these animals and they are trying to give the animal a second chance after the first pet owner wasn't a good pet owner.

I also wanted to suggest that if you do decide to fence the yard (not that I think you should have too) you could always ask the home owner to help, or even discount your rent if you did decided to install a fence since it would improve the value of their property.

Good luck, hopefully you are able to find a solution & quickly.
