And I have no idea where to look for a cheap and decent one! Preferably as large as possible, not looking to spend over $100 or so... any of you have any suggestions? I have a mac if it matters. Thanks guys! Ive already browsed Amazon - but when it comes to tech stuff, Im not so great at shopping around.

This one looks like a pretty great deal - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136471

Radio Shack or Best Buy should have them. Prices have come down, so a 1 TB might be around $100 now.

If you're just moving media, then it won't matter if it is formatted for a Mac or PC. It only matters if you plan on moving programs to run to it.

Does your Mac support USB 3.0 ("SuperSpeed USB")?

If it does then you damn sure want to get an external hard drive that does too.

Transferring a massive amount of data over USB 2.0 ("Hi-Speed USB") is like watching paint dry.

The Western Digital Elements 2TB Desktop External Hard Drive that you are looking at is USB 2.0 ("Hi-Speed USB").

If I was you and if your Mac support USB 3.0 ("SuperSpeed USB") I'd probably get one of these two drives.

Seagate Expansion 2TB USB 3.0 Black Desktop Hard Drive STBV2000100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822178116

Seagate Expansion 3TB USB 3.0 Black Desktop Hard Drive STBV3000100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822178117

I'd probably get the 2TB model. I have ran into some weird issues and have heard about some weird issues when using drives larger than 2.2TB. Both hardware and software related issues.

You probably won't run into these issues with a Mac and if you are only going to use it with a Mac then maybe go with the 3TB model. But IDK. You might want to do your own research and talk to some Mac experts.

For my Mac, I've always gone to

http://www.smalldog.com/category/Storage_and_Backup/External_Hard_Drives

first. Dependable and reasonable prices. With a hard drive, I wouldn't go for just "cheap." Any HD can fail but I hate to trust my data to a HD that fails after a month.
