Miley Cyrus VMA performance sparks moral outrage

I think it was trashy and tasteless, IMO. So is the video but at least in a video it's appropriate. I think younger crowds also watch the VMAs and people need to remember that. It is definitely geared more toward an adult audience, but even 12/13 year olds don't need to be exposed to that train wreck massacre, not that anyone else should be either!!! lol.

I wonder how old everyone here was when they started seeing this kind of thing. I was watching porn when I was that age and having lame cybersex and I think we would all probably agree that's a whole lot "worse." I'm not sure how much damage the VMAs are really going to do to young teenagers and how scarred or polluted young minds will become when they see an adult woman rub her bottom on an adult man. I don't think I agree with the argument that, "it's made for adults but kids might see it so we should make it for kids."

Young people do imitate what they see, but isn't Youtube full of sexualized dancing videos that most teenagers have free access to? It's tough for me to see how a televised event is any more widespread or worse than what can be found on non-porno sites by anybody.

I just feel that most adults were exposed to this kind of thing at a young age and the world is still turning. When most kids these days start watching pornography at 11-13 years old I find it hard to believe that a sexy video award performance is going to do any harm.

I actually quite agree. My post was more like from the thoughts of a parent to quite young kids, I do realize VMA performances tend to be wacked out, & I think when my kids hit that age I'm sure my views will probably be a little more "well it's not the worse they've seen!" It's really easy for me to be all "MY KIDS WILL NEVER BE EXPOSED TO SUCH THINGS!" now :lol: Real life will bitch slap me later!

& I also don't think the VMAs are the "worse thing ever" or anything. YouTube definitely exposes youth to massive amounts of WTF. I just implied that I believe performers should be more conscious of their audiences. It's real easy to be like fuck it I don't care & most do, it just leaves a very small percentage of people left for our up and coming youth to actually look up. I could name a million celebrities my kids know about that I wish they didn't and very few who I would say are good role models. I am sure it's always been like this and just now, being on the parent end of it, am I noticing it.

It's 100% my responsibilty to monitor my kids as much as I can to ensure their watching appropriate things and forming healthy ideals about the world. That doesn't mean I can't wish that more people would step up to be someone who my kids could enjoy and look up to instead of all the train wrecks & mass amounts of sexuality (& typically not the SEXY kind either) we're seeing lately.

Now I'm not a parent, but do your kids imply or let you know that they look up to celebrities? I can't ever recall thinking of a celebrity and going "gosh I sure look up to him/her and want to follow their example," up until the very first day I watched cam models. The people I looked up to as a kid were all fictional characters in books, which I think isn't necessarily the best way to go. I feel that with celebrities or real people, you can sit down with your kids and have talks and discussions about what they do. Miley's performance could be seen as a great chance to sit down with your son or daughter and talk about sexuality, appearances, motivation, and a host of other issues. On the other hand, as a little bookworm, my parents had no fucking clue what ideas were being imparted to me and those ideas were NEVER challenged or explained to me.

My kid is way too young for me to know if this still happens, maybe kids now are different than I was, but I can recall plastering my walls with magazine clippings/posters for artists/actors, etc., that I loved and I can't imagine that it would have been all that difficult for my parent to look around my bedroom to see who I was idolizing or what books I was reading.

I do, however, completely agree that instances like this are a great time to sit down and talk to your kid about all sorts of issues.

We've been talking about this a little in the Models Only section, but I'll post here too.

The only reason I watched the VMAs is that I'm a huge Justin Timberlake fan. I adore that man, and he's one of the few artists who I'll actually spend money on to buy their CDs and concert tickets. I thought Miley Cyrus' performance sucked ass too, but I'm not mad at her or "outraged" about anything she did.

And the VMAs isn't exactly considered a kid-friendly awards show anyway, right? It's MTV, dude. You're probably better off watching the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards (or whatever it's called) if you want to see "role-model"-qualified music artists perform...lol. Hell, sign up your kid for the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program instead of relying on a Pop/Rock/Rap artist to be a role model. Or better yet, be a parent and stop relying on t.v./music celebrities to be your kid's role model.

I remember an old Snoop Dogg interview where he was commenting on people who accuse him of "not being a good role model." He said that he didn't ask to be anybody's role model.

As far as Miley goes I just do not know her or much about her other then the fact that the show she was on was a huge hit and produced TONS of merchandising. I don't think her outfit was wild by any means. I do think her hair looks bad but it's hers to do with what she wants. I guess maybe I am getting too old for moral outrage. I'm so sick of hearing about miley cyrus. The more you talk about her, the more you give her what she wants... ALSO in case anyone didn't realize, the ozone layer has a hole in it, there are currently 10 wars/conflicts raging on this planet causing over 1000 violent deaths per year, children, women and men are still being raped, sexually assaulted and told its their fault, gay people can't get married in some places, and 3-4 million domestic animals are euthanized in shelters the USA every day. That's the population of my entire country. Oh and Africa is still starving and Japan is still killing whales. Can we get outraged about something thats REALLY ACTUALLY IMPORTANT NOW?

I get that people have opinions on stuff. I really do. I have some too. But all i see lately is detailed, enraged debate over someones stage performance and no one seems to talk this much about the things that are really truly horrific on this planet.

I was the same way with books!! That's why I think it's important to also know what your kid is reading so that if you feel there are issues needing to be discussed, they can be brought to the table. So yeah- basically I agree with everything you just said!
