So, I had a random thought today. I'm a geek. I used to be a dork, until I discovered the wonderful world of geekdom, and went from frumpy dork to sexy geek. (Not saying all dorks are frumpy, just that I was). I've had guys come in and try to insult me by saying that I'm a nerd, or a geek, or a dork. It doesn't bother me. Mostly because, I know I'm a geek. I'm proud of the fact that I'm a geek. It actually pleases me when people can tell that I'm smarter than the average person, because I was put down or pushed aside so much as a younger person. So someone calls me a geek, and I say "yes I am, thank you for noticing".

I was wondering- if you're a geek or a nerd, does being called a nerd bother you? If you aren't, have you noticed one way or the other?

Also, another tangent for this thread is- what things do other people think are insults that don't bother you?

Another big one for me is weird. I know I'm a little off, so I don't mind being called weird. It's the truth. Other people will say "don't say that about yourself" as though I'm insulting myself when I say I'm weird, but I just say "it's not an insult, I'm not a normal person!"

I'm called geek and weird as well. I call myself those things too. Doesn't bother me at all. I also happen to be a rather large guy that people not trying to spare my feelings would describe as fat. I have to tell the people who try to be all nice about it that I don't give a fuck because I am, indeed, rather fat. Then again, I don't even mind being called an asshole most of the time. It's only when I don't remember even doing anything to a person and am called an asshole that it bothers me at all but that's mostly because I wonder what I've done to them. >_>

I have a pretty good idea of what I am and tend to be very honest with myself. If you call me something I know I am, how can I be upset that you recognized it? I suspect most people who get offended at true insults are in denial.

I suppose that's true. Some people are better at not taking themselves too seriously and laughing at themselves a bit. Others are not. Some insults may have a touch of truth to them but are just hateful or hurtful ways of describing something and those I can see someone being legitimately upset about.

Speaking of which... I've never understood how you can have a woman who will get upset about being called a bitch one minute then the next minute is proud when someone calls her a "bad bitch." Just does not compute.

I do have a habit of getting upset over insults that I don't feel describe me.

if someone calls me a bitch, I get upset because I don't feel like I am one, so I wonder how they came to that conclusion.

I laugh at ones that I don't care about and find untrue though, like someone calling me fat when I was 120 lbs...

I would suppose it's all about perception & perspective.

If you're comfortable with who you are, whether that be nerd, hippy, jock, bitch, nice girl-next-door, asshole, etc, etc, then what anyone says or thinks about you will have no relevance to how you think about yourself.

If, however, your self image is predicated on how others view you, then, what people say or call you will have an impact.

Personally, outside of a very select few who are close to me, I couldn't give less of a rodent's behind what others think of me.

A little story to illustrate the perception/perspective:

I used to have hair down to the middle of my back (and if I do say so myself, looked damn good, thick, wavy (think Bon Jovi circa 1988), but alas, time and genetics (receding hairline) have cause me to no longer sport that look). This was around the time the song "Get a Haircut and Get a Real Job" was popular. I was in a bar with my then girlfriend. Were talking to another couple (the guy had long hair), and the guy says to me "Get a haircut and get a real job" (I don't remember the gist of the conversation, just that part). This offended my girlfriend, but did not phase me in the least. Now, maybe, if this comment had come from some clean-cut preppy or business type person, I may have had an issue with it. But coming from another long-hair, it was kind of an inside joke. Now if it had been some random asswipe off the street, I probably would have blown a kiss with my middle finger extended.

OK, enough rambling. Either own it, or be offended. It's all about self image.

:twocents-02cents:

I'm with Rogue on this one. I've been called pretty much everything in the book since youth. The one time it almost offended me was when word got around to my mother that a teacher at my high school, which I had graduated the year before was telling others that I worshiped Satan. Apparently this affected her to the point that she felt the need to call my friend's mom to get her perspective. I laughed out loud when asked. The only offense I felt was that my mom entertained the idea.

Actually I'm wrong, I was offended when my step-mom accused me of the same thing to my dad. I was reading a book about different cults, so obviously, I was in league with the Dark Lord. However, I was still ordered to take care of my sister- her daughter- after school. I must say, that left me a little confused.

After a while I just realized people know nothing about me. My wife is the only person who knows what my monsters are, everyone else is just trying to place themselves in a position of power over me and they all lack the ability to do so.

Personally, I like to play it up sometimes. Especially if someone calls me a "fag" or "homo," etc. I change my posture, heighten my voice, ad a lisp and tell them they handle my sweet ass. Of course my goes around on my neck.

My favorite thing to do now is to tell people I've been called worse things...

by better people.

I've never understood some of these terms. It's as though they're trying to insult you by labeling you a 'nerd', or a 'geek' - much like schoolyard children who think its funny to call things they dislike 'gay'.

The reason why it doesn't affect me is less that the word is non-offensive, but rather - I know that what they intend to suggest (to be socially impaired) has not an ounce of truth to it.

The term camwhore comes to mind. Some find it amusing and even use the term to describe themselves while others find it offensive.

Unfortunately some room visitors just use the term "whore" rather than camwhore which makes it even worse! I hate to hear that used. :naughty:

I heard a girl describe herself on MFC as an "erotic webcam model" recently... which I kinda like much better. As a job title, it says what it does on the tin, but in a much more tasteful way methinks. :)

I'm a geek, I don't mind being called a geek.
I, do, however, mind being called a nerd. I hate it. when someone calls me a nerd, I usually say something to the effect of "I'm a geek, not a nerd"

with that said, I have flashbacks of the movie "Revenge of the Nerds" when the word nerd is used. I have visions pocket protectors, glasses taped up, skinny, bullied, straight A students etc etc. all of which, I am not.

Only people I respect and trust can hurt me with words. I could not really care less about others, I just ran out of fuck at some point in my life I guess.

I'm totally a geek. I'd argue I'm not a nerd as I'm not all that smart but I certainly have the capacity to geek (I just did it! I paraphrased Scott Pilgrim!).
I watch films and TV series that the average person likely does not; when it comes to music, I'm an elitist snob (I'm like a far less cool version of Jack Black in High Fidelity); I play a lot of RPGs (Western AND Japanese); I watch and enjoy professional wrestling in a non-ironic fashion; and I write stuff for fun - in short, I do a lot of geeky things.
But that's me, ya know? If I wasn't a geek, I'd be someone else. Getting offended by someone pointing out that I am me and not someone else would be tiring. And poopy.

Anyone who is trying to be offensive with either of these terms better be either 7, or have a very good reason why they have a piss-poor vocabulary

I concur.

But seriously (if I'm capable), I agree with almost 100% of your post (I doubt that I totally agree with 100% of anything). Very well put. No one can be anyone but who they are. If someone finds that laughable, distasteful, corny, stupid, etc., well that is more of a reflection on them than you.

Hell, I'm a proud member of the 80's hair metal society, which, you, my friend, probably find disdainful. But I'm ok with that, because it's part of who I am. I don't run from it. I own it.

And yeah, I enjoy professional wrestling as well. And dammit, it's not fake. It's choreographed and scripted, but it's not fake. So there.

Hey, any genre that produced riffs like these can't be all bad :)

Also, while they're lampooining the genre, these guys are pretty fucking good...

Yes. I don't like the term 'cam whore' at all. I'd rather be called a 'cam girl' or 'cam model'.

I love it if someone refers to me as a Nerd or Geek. That's actually a huge complement to me (whether they meant for it to be or not).
The one "Word of all Words" I hate above all others. And no matter how many times I hear it, or who I hear say it, it never fails to get under my skin is... The "N" word.
The closest thing I had to a "Dad" in my life was my older (half) brother. And being that he is 12 years older then me, u can bet he took on a lot of adult/parent responsibilities. Well anyways, he also happens to be half black. So in a sense (being as though I was raised by a black person), I kinda' feel a little black myself LOL.
But the biggest reason is because I love and adore my brother with all of my heart, to the point that I wouldn't hesitate to jump in front of a bullet for him. So I feel great empathy in my heart when ever I hear some ignorant fool use that word to talk down about another race.

I thought this thread was going to be a list of insults that aren't really insulting. My contribution was going to be "Your face is the 1%!" You are welcome, world of comedy.

I don't care what anyone calls me. People can call me a nerd or a geek...is that even an insult anymore? I thought it was the other way around these days, since it's cool to be a nerd. People can call me a camwhore, that's cool, that's what I am. Slut? Fair enough, I'm promiscuous. Bitch? It happens. Lame? Pretty much. Boring? Sometimes. Stupid? Definitely.

Actually, there is one word I HATE being called: Trekker. It's so elitist-sounding. I'm a goddamn Trekkie and proud of it. Fuck the term Trekker. Trekkie sounds sooo much cooler.

Nerds vs. Geeks, Star Trek vs. Star Wars, DS9 vs. TNG, Trekkie vs. Trekker....fake nerd wars are so amusing lol.
What's it mean if I actually have an answer to all of those?

Geek, Prefer Wars, TNG, Trekkie... just sayin' though I did kinda like Odo and Quark and their back-and-forth moments from DS9.

I've been called everything under the sun and I don't mind it at all because I clearly done something to deserve to be called such things. I adapt to my audience for since my youth I've always had my fingers in many different pies and I never thought it as a bad thing because what fun is it to pigeon hole yourself into one role?

I can talk about geeky things may it be tv shows that the common person doesn't watch, or music that isn't even close to the radio or mainstream and never will be, or even cartoons that are directed at an audience half my age (adventure time!) I like video games not named call of duty, comics, pro wrestling, and so forth. I'm not so much a nerd because nerd's are smart, and me not so smart. BUT yet if the people I'm around isn't geeky and want to talk more jock like things like sports or working out, I can do that just as well. It's just when those people get a taste of my other side that I get made fun of for caring about either one- I just laugh and shrug.

Basically I'm good as long as the topic isn't cars or hunting. Gas makes cars go, and bullets make things go dead. That's all I know.

Dammit, that made me literally laugh out loud.

I hate being called a nerd! What? Really...what would make you think otherwise?

I pride myself on being nerdy. I stumped a room full of guys last night with my knowledge of totally obscure moment in a Spiderman cartoon. Another "insult" that doesn't bother me at all is being called short. Yeah? I'm 4'9" oh noes! I should totally do something to fix that!

I'm not insulted when I get called a nerd but more so defensive of all the awesome true nerds cuz well... I'm not that cool. I'm just blind and wear glasses sometimes. I feel like I need to stick up for them and prove how unworthy I am of that title.

I'll add something though "gawd yer pale" ... yeah... duh. I'm a ginger. I'd look farkin weird if I wasn't. so, ummmm... thanks?

I get dork more than nerd...but um, given my name and I'm proclivity to referencing very dorky things... no one is shocked. I am not ashamed that I gleefully enjoy stuff. Why should I?

I get a fair amount of comments on my weight. I am either a fatfatfatty or too skinny. Or too pale. Or am lacking a soul (my response is that I have a soul, I have several. Gingers have a freckle for every soul they've stolen. ;3). Or my boobs are fake, "those are fake aren't they BB?" The popular insult today was that I was crazy. My response was, "yes and?" Dur. Also "were you cute before you got that nose ring?" :naughty: I'm a wee bull bitchface; the nose ring is a warning "here thar be stubborn", ectect.

Can always count on JJ to come up with reality bordering on the absurd. Not worthy of an insult. Classic. I love it.

I used to be a mathlete and on the quiz bowl team in high school and it really bothered me getting called a nerd or geek, but then I realized that not only was I just as hot as the "popular" girls but I was way smarter and was going to be able to accomplish more in life than most of them. So i was like "fuck 'em." and it hasn't really bothered me since getting out of high school.

But the fact that nerd ISN'T an insult was half the point of this thread! (The other half was that most insults are just lame, so people who attempt to troll by throwing random insults at models are totally fail)

I've laughed at quite a few of the responses. And yes, if you wish to list off insults that aren't really insulting, go for it!

There's this one cam girl who really hates me and is constantly calling me a whore, as if it's a bad thing. She also somehow contacted one of my viewer's family members and told them all what a "sick fuck" he was for buying HER porn that she made. She says to me "everyone calls you a whore, no one likes you"...

Here's the funny thing... I'm a sub and my guys know that when they call me a whore, it turns me on. It's a compliment! Another funny thing, she does the same thing I do, how are we any different? Lol. And how is my viewer a sick fuck for watching her porn when she's the one who made it?

Oh and she's always talking about how fat I am. The reason she doesn't like me is because a few of her old fans started watching me, on their own free will. I did not try to take them from her lol. But if they didn't like my fat they wouldn't be watching me now would they :p
