I just can't wrap my head around it, sorry! I highly doubt that teenagers are going to start flooding into abusive relationships because of a book. I always thought it had more to do with upbringing through years/moments of abuse and psychological disorders. I will never, ever understand the line of thought that suggests books will corrupt the innocent. It's just offensive to think about.

I'm fairly certain you're just making a joke here, but on the off chance you're not and since I'm bored at work...

Books and media in general don't corrupt the innocent. They corrupt the stupid. The kids that watch Superman cartoons and jump off a roof, the teenagers that kill themselves because of heavy metal music, the women that follow the relationship advice in Cosmopolitan, anyone that looks at a 6 foot tall supermodel that weighs less than 100 pounds and thinks she's the pinnacle of human beauty, and the men that believe a cam model when she says she wants to watch us jerk off are all stupid. An intelligent person can read Twilight and understand that its fiction and flight of fancy, but an idiot is far more likely to follow something they see or read. And unless you're a complete recluse then you've got to understand that the majority of people are a tongue-stuck-to-a-frozen-pole away from being a level of stupid that not even Sarah Palin is capable of. I can't fight against stupidity, but I can fight against things that are likely to keep the stupid that way.

I think my main problem is that too many people think that the words good and like are completely interchangeable. They think that they like something and therefore it is good. Anyone that's ever had a Hot Pocket understands that you can like something that's utterly horrible. I will never argue against someone saying that they like something. Personally I enjoyed the movie Green Lantern even though it was pretty bad. I didn't like The King's Speech, but its a good movie. Opinions are opinions, but saying something is good is making an assessment or reviewing something and that enters the realm of objectivity. You may have liked Adam Sandler's Jack and Jill, but saying that it was a good movie is incorrect and you will be told as much. The same goes for Twilight, Dane Cook, Nicolas Cage, jarred spaghetti sauce, Michael Bay movies, and many other things.

Sounds like you could make a whole thread out of that. :shifty:

Quote of the day!
(and I don't even like Hot Pockets, but if you wanna talk White Castle...)

 Possibly, but I envision no one posting to it past the original post. lol Kind of like saying train travel is superior to air travel because you get to see more of the terrain close up. Or that air travel is superior because you get there sooner. Both true, but which is important to whom and when? lol

Myself, I don't compare movies and books because silly arguments ensue.

No offense to you, but if there is no book to base some movies off of would the screenwriter have thought of them? Would there have been a Princess Bride (movie) if William Goldman hadn't have written the book? Maybe, but would it have been nearly as good? Probably not.

It is just my opinion, but books are the basis for so many movies, and thusly, again in my opinion, that is why the books are better than the movies. (Due to detail and tapping into the reader's imagination, instead of a movie putting an image that has to be stuck for characters, setting, and concepts.)

There's no way to compare both series. >_<
Both are different genres, have different target audiences.
Harry Potter target audience: Everyone
Twilight target audience: lonely middle aged women
Can you tell which book this genre is for?
Genre: Young Adult Fiction (with elements of thriller, romance)
It's both. Harry Potter also includes elements of action, adventure, mystery and fantasy.

Also you can compare apples and oranges. Example: Oranges are orange while apples are red, green or yellow (or combinations there of). Orange skin is peeled off and discarded, apple skin is usually eaten with the apple (but is also sometimes discarded). See, we compared those bitches.

And in conclusion, Discworld wins hands down.

Oh dear god, I feel my inner Twilight obsessed fan a stirring.....why must there even be a comparison of the 2? They are so completely different that it's ridiculous to even try to compare them to each other. Stop sippin on the haterade, they are both good, and both completely unique. Leave it at that.

As I said at the beginning, I only ever intended this to be light-hearted.
So although we disagree on their relative merits, there's no sense continuing if it's not fun for everybody anymore.

I feel the need to defend Twilight a little here.

And if all of you now go to my profile and rate me 1 Star because I enjoy the books, that's okay too :)

Never read nor watched either. Got bored and starting reading this thread. Rated 5 stars just because I could.

Oh dear lord, Harry Potter is better. And this thread was a crazy fun read! I think I've thanked the appropriate posters.

Also, just bought The Princess Bride (book) on my kindle. $5.12! Not bad. So excited to read it.

I stumbled across this today.
Honestly, I wasn't looking for it!
But I couldn't NOT share.
Never heard of this Twiglet thing, but I do like a bad review. :D

This one got to the point about the pointy-headed one, even if the author happens to prefer Tolkein's Middle Earth :snooty: :
Harry Potter and the Decline of the West
By Spengler, Jul 20, 2005
... Harry (like young Skywalker) draws his superhuman powers out of the well of his "inner feelings". In this respect Rowling has much in common with the legion of self-help writers who advise the anxious denizens of the West. She also has much in common with writers of pop spirituality, who promise the reader the secret of inner discovery in a few easy lessons. ...

... The more one wallows in one's inner feelings, of course, the more anxious one becomes. Permit me to state without equivocation that your innermost feelings, whoever you might be, are commonplace, dull, and tawdry. Thrown back upon one's feelings, one does not become a Harry Potter or Luke Skywalker, but a petulant, self-indulgent bore with an aversion to mirrors. To compensate for this ennui one demands stimulus. That is the other ingredient in J K Rowlings' success formula. Magical devices distract us from the boredom inherent in the characters ...

The Company of Wolves was originally a short story by Angela Carter; her retelling of Red Riding Hood, complete with a very vivid description of the wolf.

She adapted it for radio, apparently elaborating on the conflicting tales told about wolves. She then co-wrote the screenplay for the film with director Neil Jordan. The film located all these within a dream, arising from the subconscious of its protagonist, who faces her own metamorphosis. The combination of folklore and fantasy, laced with irony and ambivalence, is enchanting.

I'm sorry, but the insistence that its about romance is flat out offensive. If you want real romance then I have two words for you. Westley. Buttercup. End of story.

I would say that Willow and Tara or Zander and Anya are the best romances, though even spike and buffy had quite the relationship going.

And Edward is still a paedophile for fucking something that dumb.

Other Stuff

I disagree, but I'm not open to debate the (many) subjects brought up. I have my reasons for avoiding debates on this forum, so I hope you understand. I did want closure here without extending the conversation and didn't want to make you feel as if I ignored you ;)

I couldn't post again without saying that, sorry it took so long! So onward about how AWESOMER Harry Potter is than Twilight. I can compare whoever I want, damnit, and I'm comparing the two and saying that Twilight sucks the Elder Wand's Avada Kadavra.
