In one of the rooms I frequent, the model can't always post user created emots. This is generally with newer emots. So I was wondering if anyone knows if the model interface just doesn't update the emot shortcuts as often, or what the deal might be.

User posts an emot :example, that works. and other members can use that emot too. model types the same thing, and we just see that text rather than the picture. (and its not a emot fail like the red X, you actually just see the text :example as if it wasn't a shortcut)

So either something flaky with mfc (I know, shocking right) or maybe the model has a foreign keyboard and the letters aren't really the same. (I'm going to have her try a cut and paste of the text to rule out the keyboard).

2 things:

1. It absolutely drives me bonkers to see that word without an e at the end. Emote.

2. If she's using the old model software (the .exe instead of the new and updated model web browser broadcaster) then she's more likely to run into this.

Here's the link she should be using to sign in to broadcast. http://www.myfreecams.com/modelweb/ It has more features than one could imagine (many more than the outdated .exe) and is updated more frequently since, you know, it's browser based and cool and shit.

I use the "updated" model software because the web version doesn't seem to work for me. It pixelates my image quality no matter what browser I use. My internet is ok too and the software doesn't seem to mess it up so i stick to it.

Finding the right combination of cam software, flash and browser will fix that, but I know a lot of girls don't want to go through the trouble of trial and error to see which one works for them.

For me, Manycam with my logitech 9000 and chrome with the browser version of flash is the best combination.

emote. That would be an acting/theatre term.

emot - at least to me, is short for emoticon. Thus is an acceptable abbreviation.

If you'd like to argue that the images people post and call emots aren't emoticons, I'd agree with you. Emoticons are the smilies formed with : ) but its the common usage, and I dont know of a better term. You haven't persuaded me to switch to calling them 'emotes'. No one is projecting their emotion to the back row of the theatre.

:)

I did talk with my friend about the new 'top member' section. I'm assuming that is in the web version only. So she must be doing that. I'll ask her at some point, just to double check.

Top member section is in our administration pages, nothing to do with the .exe nor the web broadcaster.

I think both words are actually acceptable to use as short for emoticons (per the current trends and usage in society) but I guess it's just a preference/pronunciation thing for me. I pronounce it "ee moat", so when it is spelled with no e at the end, it doesn't sound right in my head. Emot = "ee mawt" to me.

This is the first time I've seen someone spell it "emot." Emotes are emotive, they suggest something you're feeling. Also, keep in mind that the same word can have many meanings.

According to the Urban Dictionary (not a scholarly work but handy for current trends in casual language) "emot" means "generally used in internet talk, means to express an emotion of some sort is generally preceeded and followed by a *, or ::, or <> to show a feeling or emotion you are having while conducting written conversation." Like *literacy*. :)

And from Wikipedia:

In MMORPGs with visible avatars, such as Everquest, Asheron's Call, and World of Warcraft, certain commands entered through the chat interface will print a predefined /me emote to the chat window and cause the character to animate, and in some cases produce sound effects. For example, entering /confused into World of Warcraft's chat interface will play an animation on the user's avatar and print "You are hopelessly confused." in the chat window.[3]

Thanks, I knew I wasn't the only one! :)

Yeah, they all jumped on me in playboymegan's room telling me I was wrong when we discussed this thread.

Its a shame this is the first time we interacted, Amber. Now I'll always be that 'emot' guy. :)
This really isn't a hill I'm willing to die on.

hadn't really noticed how other people were typing it. I'll pay more attention.

As a parting shot, http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=emot&word2=emote
google fight compares the number of search results for emot versus emote.
(I know, it proves nothing, I just think its funny)

and thanks to all who commented on the original question as well.
