He's been an amazing actor in the past 15 years, had fantastic roles that he played mindblowingly, but has failed to get an Oscar up until this point. People are outraged and perplexed by that fact, so it's a huge deal that he finally got one. So yes, it was "give this man his freaking award already". Way overdue.
I guess this where i differ in opinion from everyone else's. I don't find Leo's body of work that much more impressive than certain other actors/actresses who've been nominated less, which is why i found the #Leo4Oscar a little surprising. For the past week, i've read articles on his chances leading up to Sunday night, which felt like a ramped up story about an actor's tortured soul needing to win an Oscar to justify his career. Not saying he wasn't deserving for this nomination or previous nominations, but it was a subject made bigger than it should be (in my humble opinion), even if all his past performances were considered masterpieces. Edit: Felt like there was a bandwagon affect where everyone started cheering for the poor guy.
