Well, my critter isn't on cam but I feel the need to share about him today. He's at the vet right now.
Two weeks ago I took him in to get his rear right leg checked because he'd been limping on it a little, he broke it about 5 years ago and the vet thought maybe the metal pin in it was bothering him, gave me a quote of $550 for the xray/anaesthetic/operation, that he couldn't do it until the new year but it wouldn't be a bad idea to run some blood tests for his general liver functions etc.
So they did that, called me back and gave me the news that he was diabetic. Ugh. I had to inject him with insulin twice a day, and bring him back in a week to get his sugar levels tested to see if the insulin dose was at the right level. At which point they told me his blood sugar was at normal levels, and his diabetes may have gone into remission (1 week later..), so I bought a blood sugar testing machine and the strips, which by the way only come in packs of 100 and cost $68...and was told to test him daily for a week. Well I did, and he has had completely normal sugar levels and not needed insulin all week. Which is awesome, so long as I don't let myself wonder if they fucked up and he never actually HAD diabetes...
So obviously, his leg was still a problem. I booked him in for his operation and they said they'd call me after the xray if there were any complications with the surgery etc. Well the surgery went fine, they removed the pin and also a screw attached to a plate in there that may have been causing him pain. Then she told me on the xray they noticed quite a large buildup of fluid in his abdomen, and recommended an ultrasound which they're doing tomorrow morning - it's not an obstruction because he's been going to the toilet etc fine, and likely not liver failure which is one of the other potential causes because there was no indication of that on his blood test 2 weeks ago.
So he may have cancer apparently. I don't want to freak out about this until I know what's going on and what can be done about this but I've had Kato for 11 years, he's my mate, and I want to give him all the help I can and feel horrible worrying about the cost when his life could be at stake, but I also kind of have to be concerned about the cost.
So far, from the blood tests 2 weeks ago to the ultrasound tomorrow it's cost around $1450.
I know this is all off-topic and apologies for that, I just needed to share.
