Nah, some people just enjoy the public aspect. Most people don't follow models on social media and even though OF is popular people have been tipping for public shows for far longer.

Thanks for this thread. I joined this forum last year because I was interested in the model’s perspective; I think it’s kind of fascinating to share observations from both sides of the glowing screen.
Yep. I spent the first-ish year on camsites without even considering a private show. There was just too much chaotic fun in the public chat in the rooms I used to visit. One of the models didn't do privates at all, and it probably wasn't necessary business wise either.
I've done a few now, and I agree with @Smoothie's perspective on them. Haven't done any since last summer though, since the model I used to do them with began having expectations of an hour long pvt every time I showed up, so the dynamics of the whole thing became weird. She's left (or changed site or something) now anyway.
I can confirm that. A model I visit almost daily usually gets the same members, but sometimes someone I have never seen before, comes in, and goes private, only to never see him again. Or makes a big tip for a Skype also to never see him again. I've seen it in several rooms.
Is it really that hard to stay in the room a bit and be part of her community? It helps the room to feel more alive and active and thus helping the model and maybe in the end even more than the tokens for the Private.
I don't know, maybe it's a time issue; People not having a lot of time to spend an hour in a room, and only looking for a quick cum or something.
I get your point and I agree with the sentiment because long term it's nicer and I've been a model cheerleader and regular myself, but sometimes you just want (or need) to be a total slut. You don't always want the kumbaya campfire experience when you go to cam sites. I pay for the model's time, but I don't think I have any obligation to show up the next day and the next day after that. It's not what I want.
Some models desperately want to connect with you, while other models desperately don't. I pay my dues and move on. Is that wrong?

Nah. The same way that everyone runs their cam room differently, everyone uses cam sites differently too. It's strange to expect that everyone has the ability, time, energy, and desire to take part in them to the same extent.

I haven't since October, but I do look around on chaturbate and streammate (that I learned about through here haha) just out of curiosity some times.
It’s far more common to have to pay for it. On a few occasions, I’ve had models offer me their WhatsApp number as a way of keeping in touch once I became an established regular that they trusted. But those were exceptions to the rule.
That's not the case for every model, they might make less money by declining pvts, unless they have larger followings and make significantly more from public shows. Say someone has tks they want to spend on a pvt but they spend it tipping for towards a public goal, once that is reached people are going to tip less, they got what they came for. If they took the model pvt the model could return later on and finish the goal if it's not a super long pvt.
I once won a model's WhatsApp number after being the highest tipper when a goal was achieved. I unfortunately failed to notice what the goal was, so I tipped for this and for that without second thoughts. I tried to explain that I don't do WhatsApp or any other offsite comms, but she pasted her number into a PM anyway. I felt pretty weird about it, like refusing a gift or something.
You won the opportunity to get bombarded with "hey babe I miss you" messages.

Who knows. I've had some pretty mixed experiences with WhatsApp, Snapchat and cam models in the past, so I just removed offsite messaging from the equation completely. Tbh, her WhatsApp was on her tip menu, so I think it was just a way to engage the users and build a following. Then again, "bombarded with messages" can go both ways, I guess.
12 months ago I barely knew this world existed, as I know it now. Back then it was to me just models laying spread out in front of a webcam masturbating for my pleasure, to be found on different tube sites. Then a bored night last spring I went to Chaturbate looking for one of the models I enjoyed watching on tube sites. But something strange happened, 2 other models doing the exact opposite caught my attention and I started following the chat in their rooms, as a grey at first, but I soon made up my mind to buy tokens to show my support to them. I have since moved on due to 1 of them retiring and a change in my daily schedule meaning I have to sleep when the other one is streaming. But I found a couple of other rooms that suits me, and that I spend 95% of my online time in, in 1 of them as a moderator and the other as a regular and Fanclub member (1st one to join btw).
Like several others have said, to me the personality and feel of the room is very important.
To illustrate, entering the room where I am a Fanclub member this headline met me. In case you wonder today is my birthday, I was sung Happy Birthday by the model, one of the other regulars tipped her to make me the DJ for the day, and basically I was the center of attention for most of the stream. And what makes it sweeter for me is that it didn't prevent her from getting one of her biggest audiences ever, and reaching page 1 on CB. I take some pride in having helped her growing her room from the 20-30 users, mostly silent, she had 4 months ago, and today she has a room that is capable of reaching page 1 with a lot of chat going on. Not by myself but along with a handful of other regulars, and most importantly her.

And surely, believe me, never thought of her as a friend or a gf. And I can assure you she never tought of me like that as well. Just poor behaviour on her part that pissed me off. But I mean, no biggie, really. Just being pissed off, I admit, really pissed off for a while. Deleted the account after a sec, made a new one. Didn't even say bye. Also, it should be said that no real GFE would have ever behaved like that or dreamt/tried to pull that shit.
I've read some forum members posting similar experiences. I think I might have posted mine somewhere, don't remeber when or where. Totally agree with you when you say

I can't even recall WHAT caused me to first discover CB about 7 years ago.
I knew instantly that I loved it.
The business model there is remarkable in letting everyone view, and then banking on the "1 in 300" who will actually pay to interact on some level with the models. Most unique is to incentivize amazing (people, really) from all over the planet who by themselves create and represent a variety of humanity never witnessed in one spot on Earth.
So if your friend is a cam model... new, or just taking stock of herself and her presentation in 2021... she should instead harken back to advice offered by her own mother in about 4th grade:
"Just be yourself" (*** it is indisputably the best way for you to be noticed for uniqueness among such a vast selection)
And since you're not on some civilian dating site somewhere... err on the side of believing that the tipper behind the curtain admires YOU for "you" ...

There is no way for you to (fathom) why some lonely guy working on a Russian oil rig in the Sea of Okhotsk is drawn to YOU alone. Your genetics and bone structure may be as unique in his eyes as are those of the Colombian cam model you have long envied for some reason.
Nobody in the webcamming world is stuck in the equivalent to a "small town" harboring only 6 suitably-aged social prospects... so assume everyone CAN find what they want in a cam girl, and expect that those who found you are content.

Like many people I first visited out of curiosity and lust. But I'm no longer really interested in stuff such as cumshow, and my few favorite models are some non-nudes who are very good at creating connection with users and play good music. I love our conversations and I'm happy to support them, especially in this time as Covid makes social interactions very difficult.
