Do you believe in conspiracy theories? Like, Obama is one of the lizard people, chemtrails, that new electronics are fitted with mind-control devices, that the FDA purposely tells people to eat harmful foods so Big Pharma can profit off of new drugs, the Holocaust was faked, et cetera.

Some that I have heard from my friends:
♦ Mr. Evvie believes that 9/11 was a false flag operation
♦ My ladyfriend Mary believes that flu vaccinations are a "conspiracy", but she wouldn't say what for or why
♦ An old friend of mine said that she had proof her father's co-worker had invented a miraculous healing drug from lizards which regrew part of his hand, but the FDA refused to "allow" it because then other companies wouldn't profit; she also said that there was a "cure for cancer" that was being suppressed for the same reasons. (she did not say which cancer there was a cure for, and she seemed a little surprised that there were different types of cancer when I brought it up). She also told me that the Antichrist had been born as a child preacher in the south - this was all about 5 years ago.

For it to count as a conspiracy theory, it has to be some sort of plot or scheme. Like, you may believe that the growth of genetically modified foods is going to make every adult in the world develop serious food allergies to all wheat and corn - but it's not really a conspiracy unless someone is behind it, doing it on purpose to kill everyone.

I find conspiracy theories to be very interesting, but I'm not sure I've ever really gotten behind one. Perhaps it makes me a sheeple, but I'd rather not live in a world where our president is an alien.

What do you guys think? Do you like conspiracy theories? Think they're nifty? Think they're The Truth? Think they're silly? What are your favorite theories?

[plz note: I estimate that the chances of this thread turning extremely bitchy are around 82%. Let's all just pretend for a while that we're tolerant and accepting of what other people think]

I'm only fond of conspiracy theories that are so outrageous that they're obviously nonsense...then I can enjoy them for the comedy.

Serious-sounding conspiracies, but which are based on half-baked ideas I believe are dangerous. Dangerous in the sense that they tend to harden us to REAL conspiracies when they occur. The news, when stories aren't properly vetted makes our lives one, long Enquirer story.

I think it's kind of silly to believe in them. I look at the world and to me it seems absolutely bonkers as is; no need to bring nazi aliens into it to make it interesting.

I do think they are interesting, though. Speaking of nazi aliens, my favorite is the Denver International Airport conspiracy theory. It's got paintings with subliminal nazi messages, nazi aliens living in the basement, the freemasons, alien imagery when looked at from the right angle, everything a conspiracy theory needs!

what is a false flag operation??

I believe the odd conspiracy theory... if it makes sense to me.
I don't know the ins-and-outs, but a false flag operation is when a country's government attacks its own people.

In the case of the 9/11 attacks, the argument is that the Bush Administration attacked the Twin Towers and other locations, which left the country enraged and gave them an easy route to go to war.

In another example, the Wizard of Oz wants to throw the Lollipop Guild in to slavery. So he pays the Wicked Witch to bomb the Emerald City. After the bombing, the Wizard releases documents blaming the Lollipop Guild on the bombing. With the citizens of Oz scared and willing to do anything to protect themselves, they give their full support for the Wizard to enslave the Lollipop Guild. That is a false flag operation.

JFK being assassinated by his own government is the main one I guess. There's a fair bit of evidence to support that one and it makes some sense.

There's some that wouldn't surprise me, like government misleading its people or regulating things in such a way that benefits big companies - although I've never bothered to research any of it.

There's always been something about 9/11 that felt a little off - the ignored warnings of terrorist activity days prior to the attacks, the ease with which the terrorists pulled it off and the way in which the Towers came down, all kinda, possibly, maybe point towards some shady shit. But I've certainly never researched any of it and would be hesitant to say that I think it was a government conspiracy. I mean, it likely wasn't. But there's that lingering doubt, I guess.

Probably the most famous and blatant false flag was when the nazis, prior to gaining full power, burned down the Reichstag building to cast blame on their enemies.

hahaha, that it great. And to think, that it was right next to the world's largest outside stockpile of nerve gas (8,000 tons) for 40 years and no one ever noticed.

If you'll check my MFC profile occupation I think you'll see where I stand ;)
But seriously, I don't think Obama is an alien...but I think there's truth to "conspiracy theories" that is often written off as paranoia in today's society. I studied journalism and communications and all that jazz for years, and It's pretty clear to me that most mainstream "news" reports aren't journalism, but in fact agenda based to cater to the political and economical interests of the owners of the major news companies. In that sense yes I'm a "conspiracy theorist." I was raised to question everything, and just because someone tells me something doesn't mean it's true. If the average person walking down the street doesn't give two nuts about you, or wouldn't trust you for a second, you're telling me I'm supposed to trust political leaders, and the like to care about what's best for ME? That's just how I look at the world, and it may be very cynical but it is what it is.
JFK? absolutely... and similar politcal events.
What we forget lots of times are the stories that at one time were deemed "conspiracy theories" for being questioned when they happened, later on the conspiracy is proven fact. There's plenty of examples including the Gulf of Tonkin, or Tuskegee Experiment.
I draw my own conclusions, but yes I'd say I believe in "conspiracies" I don't even use that word though because most of the time, it's used by the media to label anyone believing in something different a total nut job. :twocents-02cents:

There were a couple documentaries on the way the buildings were made that did the rounds after the collapse. Basically they were only rated to be hit by aircraft far smaller than the planes that eventually them, and the basic building structure was a light steel lattice with only a non structural 4" layer of concrete on each floor. The burning jet fuel weakened the metalwork so much that they couldn't support the floors above and so collapsed. I was actually watching this happen on TV at the time, and a film crew in the ground floor of the second building recorded the thump, thump, thump, of the collapse as the top floors dropped onto and crushed each floor on the way down.

As for the hijack of the planes, no one had expected something of this scale or with this level of sophistication.

While i don't believe any conspiracy theories, i always find it interesting to read up on some. It's very rare we find out if what we have been told is the truth or if one of the theories is truth so i wouldn't ever say someone is crazy to believe, as long as they can back up why they think that.

One that i find rather interesting is the Titanic insurance scam theory. The basis of this theory is that the Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic, was blamed for an incident that damaged the ship. The insurers refused to pay because of this so the owners of the ships switched them and sank the Olympic under the Titantic's name, and the 'real' Titantic served as the Olympic.

i´ve read/saw into alot of conspiracy theories out of intrest, not because i believe them all.. but it intriques me how people come up with this, especially when you see the time they spend on making video´s, reports and such.
what i found is that all the crazy sounding conspiracy theories, like the reptillians, obama beeing osama, and the ´truth´ behind the ´new world order´ mostly come with the message that we need to stick to some sorta religion..
popstars are posessed with demons, that the illuminati brought upon them, and the only way out is to convert to cristianity or islam, that kinda thing..

i just recently came across the ´paul is really dead´ video on youtube, i had no idea this happened back in the 60thies, and i highly doubt if any of it is true..
feels kinda like the reptillian stories, as long as you look hard enough, and are suspicious enough to believe it.. you will

the one that really triggered my intrest most is about the illuminati.. such dedication and time spend on explaining, and making people see that we are going to be mind controlled and supressed in the near future...
i also read the history on the actual illuminati, and it was something totally different then people are making it today..
again... it's about satan, the antichrist, satanists, and more about why we should convert to a religion not to die a horrible death..
i think a big part of the fears and the thoughts people have about this, is true..
however i doubt that it's the illuminati, i think this goes on at the goverment level in most western countries all over the world.
things are ruled for us.. we no longer have the position to really control alot of the things that are happening to the world, and yes i believe there are plans to realise the so called 'New world order'
by this i don't mean a diabolic plan to kill billions of people, or lock them up as prisoners if they don't agree, i mean there is going to be more control bit by bit

i'm still not really sure what that means... but it's a feeling.. the world has come to a point where we demand change.. and we will grab any chance to get it..

yes exactly! that's basically how I judge them all... the second religion shows it face in a theory I'm like alright nexxxxtt but the one's that are intelligent and provoke thought as opposed to just fear are the one's worth looking into in my opinion.

good post...and i agree that there are many groups, with overlapping people of consequence and influence in them, who strategize and make plans, based on the best available info regarding things like the direction of the global buildout of captialism.

but those plans and strategies aren't about controlling it all....they're just about maintaining a place in it's future.

which to me points out the reason we seem to live in an era of increasing acceptance of conspiracy theories....the world is changing fast.....old paradigms of stability are yielding to new ones that don't reassure us so much anymore.....being all civilized now, we've lost a bit our of innate ability to adapt to change...(tho our general consensus that the internet should be allowed to grow and change without power brokers manipulating remains the exception to the rule).....security feels good, and it's much easier to blame our lack of it on some small group of megalomaniacs who are out to get us, than it is to accept the struggle of individualism in a world where power and influence increasingly dictate our goals.

Sooo many to play with here.. simply stated, sure i think many of them have a good probability of being true in one way or another.

~The main one for me tho is a cure for most types of cancer does exist but is suppressed in some basement or chem vault of a mega corp somewhere. Consider how much cash big pharma would lose if cancer went away like Polio. They would indeed lose the majority of their income. Fat cats don't like the thought of lifestyle change. A little bit of fertilizer for this idea would be the inhibiting power of a plain old lemon against cancers of several types. One thing I read said only one of the ingredients in a lemon is the natural version of a chemotherapy compound but several thousand times stronger.
~JFK.. very possible, especially when you consider the time frame and how the govt operated during the cold war era.
~Chem trails.... read a lot on those back when.... all I know for sure is that for days or even over a week after crosshatch spraying locally, I'd have pretty marked respiratory issues.
~ faked moon landing... that simply points out the ignorance of so many that dont have the capacity to grasp technology or its capabilities. I grew up a NASA brat, both folks worked on the lunar project, and we knew many astronauts as neighbors and friends....wasn't faked.

For perhaps the largest conspiracy of all... there are actually folks [Sheeple] that believe our Govt in DC tells us the truth.... :laughing-rolling: Not even gonna expand on that.
:twocents-02cents:

Yes, probably the most plausible conspiracies are those that are about "conspiracy to cover up things."

Even that, though true, must be taken on an instance by instance basis. There are legitimate secrets the government keep...which pertain to diplomacy and yeah, national security. Where it runs afoul is when they hide things to cover asses rather than to improve our lives, and sometimes those overlap.

And just for shits N giggles.... Jericho (the TV series).

I could see something like this actually happening.... picture the existing Govt losing control bc people are fed up with the good ol boy network of lies and business as usual, regulating your life away. Something could easily be hatched to bring the population to its knees and back into compliance ....

that's what makes conspiracy theories so fascinating....it's usually not the ability to DO them that's absurd...it's that so few people could maintain so much silence about them.

at least, not without getting rid of some key players....like the karen silkwood story

thanks for sharing, i just watched the whole thing, i always feel i'm not in the right position to share my thoughts about 9/11.. simply because i'm not american.
however..i do wanna share that i believe after watching alot of video's about this subject... that something really dark happened that day, and i can't help to think that it's not what the official reports are telling me it was...

one last note... i don't think alot of people realize what we are capable of if we would ever stand strong against anything.. including goverments and laws
there will always be people that refruse to believe, and will follow their goverment.. but i truely believe the part of people that would like to uncover the truth, and repair our faith in this world is much bigger...

(downloading that jericho show now... trailer looked awsome! thanks bob ;) )

My brain gets too boggled to understand most conspiracy theories, but I do believe a few of the ones about vaccines.

The flu vaccine is known to cause miscarriages and still births, but it's still pushed for pregnant women to get it. The chicken pox vaccine kills children every year, and yet they still want kids to get it. I'm not sure where the conspiracies are in that, but I believe both are unnecessary. I've never had the flu or gotten the flu vaccine, but my dad gets the vaccine every year and then gets incredibly sick.

Hope that makes sense.

as a super american (a title i've just deemed myself) I say feel free to say whatever you like. I make no secret about where I'm originally from... most people can pick up on it in the way I tawk.. ;)
I haven't watched this in a long time but what I liked about this particular video.. is it's mostly science, it doesn't probe into why or who parts of the questions just how, and why what was said doesn't seem to add up. And it's true as an american (who drinks cawfee and likes the yankees) it's very hard to digest anything potentially disturbing in this particular event. Because bad things like that... sure they happen in OTHER countries... but not here... or so we've all been raised to believe. And it's such a sore spot that the idea of anything happening that day different to what we've been spoon fed is a little too much to handle for most people, even those that suspect that something's not right about it.

that made me think about something i saw on the news..
because of 'sandy' people are starting to wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to start buildings dams and such.. but when a dutch (thats why its on our news ofocurse) company suggested it a few years ago.. they were basically laughed at... why on earth would you spend billions to build something that isn't necessary.. right?
that's kinda how the states reflects itself here in europe.. i know from chatting with loads of different people americans aren't always arrogant or they don't all feel superior.. but i bet alot of people down here do believe thats how most americans are...

i enjoyed watching the video just because of the science... i never seen it explained like that... it would always go back to 'and the goverment is illuminati, thats why they did it' or 'bush did it all just so he could play war with arabic countries for their oil' ... well i think thats an issue adressed when the much needed investigation start...
this people could very well have found the right way to bring these things into the world properly.. i hope something comes out of it...

btw.. you do make me wonder now... about where you're from originally...

I love conspiracies! I'm not loony about them like Jesse Ventura is, but some of them really get me thinking.

I do think 9/11 was an inside job. There are certain missing details (building 7) and the way the towers fell still doesn't sit right with me. Call me crazy, whatever.

I don't think Bin Laden is really dead. No one saw pictures of the dead body, he was "buried at sea" before anyone could see proof. Something smells fiishy ... Osama Bin Laden is the 3rd cousin to the Bin Laden family that co-owns oil wells with the Bush family. The CIA and Pakistani ISI hired him in the 70s to help lead the Mujahadeem to keep Russia out of Afghanistan. Reagan called them "freedom fighters". I think, partly, Bush just needed an out/someone to blame things on.

As for vaccines, I will never get a flu vaccine.

Actually I would think the Gulf of Tonkin incident in which the US manufactured a fictitious naval attack in order to pass a resolution that allowed the war in vietnam, was just as if not even more blatant.

This isn't a conspiracy theory btw, the US government has released previously classified documents that confirm intelligence officers knowingly passed on false intelligence that directly led to the opening shots of the Vietnam war only a few days after the supposed incident.

also! if I ever DO get my writing ass into gear and publish anything worth reading regarding some of what I've researched throughout the years... and it gets some wings...and the mainstream media tries to use my nakedness to discredit my intelligence...back me up yos! mmkay?
;)

The main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory, is that conspiracy theorists believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. The truth of the world is that it is actually very chaotic. The truth is that it is not The Iluminati, or The Jewish Banking Conspiracy, or the Gray Alien Theory.
The truth is far more frightening - Nobody is in control.
The world is rudderless.

Words stolen ...yes...I may not believe in conspiracies but I believe in "Dis-information" (thank you Ronald Regan).
Dis Information is alive and well but to believe things like that we DID NOT land on the moon...that it was a conspiracy ...well sorry...too many things that would have come out and WAY too many people involved in that one.

See conspiracies of any kind have a failure...they involve people...and people...BLAB...even when you kill them.
(trust me that sounds less stupid when you think about it a few times)

Do I think Kennedy got killed by a group ...sure...why not ,but do I think he got killed by one man...sure why not.
One man, who has knowledge and some skill can do it if he is truly determined and prepared.
In your face Nancy Grace.

Most of them I think are complete bullshit. But there's a few that sound plausible.

The ones about drug companies deliberately suppressing the release of drugs that would cure things which we currently only control the symptoms to... not sure on that one. Part of me thinks it's people taking the movie Johnny Mneumonic too seriously (great movie, awesome message, but still...)

As far as vaccines go, I think they're not as open as they should be about the possible consequences of taking the vaccine. I do not get a flu shot, but that's because my immune system is pretty damn good. If I make sure I get two glasses of oj instead of my normal one each day, I can get through the flu in about a quarter of the time it takes the rest of the world. Seriously- 4 day flu took a day, 10-day flu took a bit over 2 days. Plus, I know that the flu shot only protects against the most common ones at the beginning of the season. The flu evolves so much faster than that!

Also, the food industry is making us fatter, but I don't think it's on purpose. Well, it is, but it isn't. They're greedy, and they want money. The government subsidizes corn, corn syrup is in everything. The cheaper stuff becomes the junk food, we get fatter. It's just the way the greed is playing out in our culture, not a deliberate conspiracy to make us fat. And this is where I think a lot of conspiracy theories come from- unintended consequences. People do something on purpose to get one result, which happens, but refuse to acknowledge the other less pleasant results. People affected by the less pleasant results think that the first group of people did it on purpose. The cause was on purpose, but the effect was not.

I think some of them are fun, until I remember that some people actually believe that. Then I figure... there's only one of two possibilities, either people are really stupid or the world is incredibly fucked up, and I don't know which one I'd prefer to believe.

But, well, in high school, I had a friend who bragged about once winning a debate in which he convinced the opposition that if all the immigrants in the US were to go back to their respective countries, the world would be so off-balance it would spiral into the sun. So I know that people will believe anything if they really want to.
