Before anyone gets excited, notice that article is from 2015. If you've installed any of your VPN software in the last year, it's fixed. And for many VPN providers it was probably not ever an issue. With PrivateInternetAccess (PIA) it isn't.
If you're at all worried, go here
https://ipleak.net/ and look for your real ip address when your VPN is turned on
Click on all the buttons for extra tests. Torrent and geolocation. It will also show you a map. See if anything looks like your real info. If not, not a problem.

Clicking the Torrent button will pop down a small magnet link. Click that to load it as a torrent in your torrent software, it will then check that software for leaks too. It looks like this for results.
(again, not my IP address. That one is Netherlands, where I have the torrent software set to use the proxy server. That way even if the VPN is off, that's always using that server. PIA offers that free for torrent usage.)
