Finishing up baseball season. Football season has started. How do you like your hotdogs?

Boiled? Grilled? Steamed?

Nathan's? Ballpark? Hebrew National?

Beef, pork, chicken, turkey?

Mustard, ketchup, onion, relish, sauerkraut, tomatoes, chili, cheese?

Anything weird, unusual or out-of-the-ordinary?

Tell us all about how you like 'em.

There's a shop local to me that allows you to have a lagniappe of toppings, and you can pick things like beef, pork, gator, guinness, bison, all sorts.
For me, I prefer a nice chopped vidalia onion and mustard pork hotdog.
Something about that makes me think of home BBQ's. :3

I like mine grilled and if that's not an option I fry them on the stove which apparently some people think is weird? But it's yummy to me! I eat them with just ketchup usually..
Yes, grilling or frying is the only way I like hotdogs at all...and I split them lengthwise when frying. Hot mustard or maybe pickle relish on top.

I have no preference of type of hotdog or how it's cooked, as long as it's smothered in chili and cheese to such an extent that it's unrecognizable on my plate. :p

This thread is blowing my mind. How are onions beating ketchup and relish?!
I think we can all agree though that if you don't put mustard on your hotdog you should die in a fire. Unless you eat that sucker plain, then I suppose it's acceptable, but should be frowned upon.

I live in Chicago and putting ketchup on a hot dog is seen as a travesty. Some restaurants simply don't serve it, and there's one that will make you ring a "bell of shame" before they'll give it to you. This is not an unusual sort of thing to see:

Personally, I would never put ketchup on a hot dog, but mainly because I just don't like the stuff in general. I don't see any reason to be snobbish about it. I'd do mine more or less as above, minus the relish. Not a fan of sweet condiments. And I might see if they had some giardiniera instead of just plain sport peppers. And then I'd probably change my mind and just get an Italian beef instead.

Where I'm from, people put Ketchup on burgers, and mustard on Hotdogs. (I break the rules and put mustard on burgers).
Onions, especially if they're grilled vidalias, bring out a sweetness to combat the tartness of mustard. It's a great flavor combination ^-^

You're starting to sell me on this whole anti-ketchup (and relish) stance on hot dogs. It does cool the dog, unlike mustard. This is not something I've considered, I just took it as gospel that you had to have ketchup and mustard on a hotdog.

This thread is turning out to be incredibly informative and life changing! Well done Zen!

My ultimate hot dog is not quite a hot dog at all. First of all, I'm eschewing the traditional frank for a brat. Then, I don't want a bun, but a tortilla. Inside that tortilla we're laying down the brat, brown mustard, chili, cheese, diced onion, pickled jalapenos & tomatillo salsa.

I am pretty openminded! I like mustard, a bit of ketchup, relish, raw onions, and cheddar cheese for a classic dog. But I've had some fancy ones and I loved those too. Most importantly is a good quality bun + hot dog. Whatever goes on top is just a bonus :-D

That sounds amazing.

I have two ways to eat hotdogs:
Grilled and slathered with BBQ sauce and onions on a bun.
Microwaved with a slice of American cheese wrapped around it.

I prefer the "Chicago Style" hot dog with two minor changes. Celery seed instead of celery salt and Jalapeno peppers.

For a change-up. I'll wrap the dog with bacon and roast, the cover with cheese sauce.

Hot dogs are near and dear to my heart. I do love me some dogs!

I like 'em any way, but my go-to is:
*Grilled all-beef frank please, nice and blistery - charred food is delicious food!
*A slightly heated bun
*Chili - lots of chili!
*Cheese (chili con queso preferred, but shredded cheddar is pretty amazing too)
*Chopped sauteed vidalia onion
*Mustard
*Possibly bacon (no no! most definitely bacon! lots and lots of bacon!)

Give me all the dogs of hot!

Grilled or boiled.

I make the BEST homemade hotdog sauce! I can't tell you every ingredient but if you like spicy toppings on your hotdog then I just might end up being your BFF! :-D

All Beef big f***er hot dogs off the grill
Jalapeno (sliced)
Hot mustard (brown/yellow color with the little seeds in it)
Hot peppers
thin sliced dill pickle
touch of diced onions

:angry4: feel some burn and call it the Red Hot Dog...if left to my own devices I'd eat a dozen of the f***ers with some ice cold beer in front of a ball game...and let me belly explode! LET ME BELLY PLODE!
Damn the rules of "proper" hot dogs...we all have a right to pick our own deaths :)

I've recently discovered Steak 'n Shake's Chicago-style footlong. Oh so good, and only $4.
So, pretty much every thing on this is good with me.

Just give me a bun with some homemade hotdog sauce!

I can't do the hotdog part :p

@eyeteach - sounds wonderful! :drool:

Just for that I'm pm'ing you my recipe! Please raise your hand swear you'll NEVER divulge the information that you're about to be entrusted with... :handgestures-salute:

Incidentally, it makes a pretty good dip too.

cant believe cheese of some sort isn't in the options list. Pffff. :snooty:

Also observationally speaking ... most kids prefer ketchup on their dogs no matter what else is on it. The majority of adults seem to have preferred other things.
