As far as I know, they haven't been very clear about how anything works because they have absolutely no clue themselves. Which is... also fairly worrying.
Pretty much this. I don't want to paint the older generation as a whole as not entirely understanding technology because there are plenty of people out there who are very tech savvy who didn't grow up with it, but, unfortunately there seem to be a lot of issues surrounding those who are in positions of power and authority not understanding technology and then making laws on it. I know someone for example who went on jury duty where certain texts were misunderstood by the judge because they did not understand text speak. This can obviously pose as a huge issue where people are perfectly competent at jobs they've been doing well for years which suddenly now need a certain level of understanding. It's like politicians often try to get involved in "science" and basically misunderstand and talk a load of nonsense which does more harm than good because they just don't understand how it works. In the case of the porn ban it's like people have agreed that there needs to be some kind of block, yet haven't got enough understanding of the internet to know how to put it in place.
I guess an example of this being, they are making this ban because "research" (I term this loosely because the survey company used has come up with some questionable results before) has found that most children first come across porn by accident. Ok, that's a problem. But, making a porn ban is likely not going to change this as pop ups, ads and probably places like twitter and social media are the main culprits of seeing unwanted porn and the ban only covers sites where porn is the majority of their site. So essentially it's actually stopping those specifically looking for porn. Ok, so in theory making everyone identify themselves every time they try to access porn isn't the worst idea. But in reality the issues with data leaks in entering a copy of your ID and even taking a photograph to every site are pretty serious.
And oh wait, getting a VPN is so easy that a teenager could easily do it themselves? Like, we're talking about kids who have grown up playing with iphones. If a horny dude in his 60s can do it, so can a horny 13 year old. I mean fuck, I learned basic code at 10 and coded my own website and built a computer at like 11/12. I was wayyy more tech savvy at that age than I am now. Also, how hard really would it be to gain access to your parent's wallets and take photos of all their cards and ID's. If the verification sites delete all the info and never make contact then that'd be so easy to trick.
Like, if they were going to do something like this then they need to know exactly what they're doing, because this is just a mess and a blatant attack on porn rather than anything to do with helping children. If they cared that much then they wouldn't have fought so hard to try and keep having topless girls on "family" newspaper covers.
It's not the first time in the UK that they've gone after porn. Remember when face sitting and squirting became illegal in videos?
