i am on Twitter since 2009, and from the first day there I gain a lot of followers and lose a little, let's say 100 followed me and 1 unfollowed.
But yesterday I lost over 1000 of my followers for less then 24 hours.
And I have noticed that I lose them only if there is something me activity on my Twitter, for example someone new follows me or retweets me or smth like that.
And one of my friends who is CamGirl lost over 1000 followers but she said during like a week. Usually she gains a lot, loses a little, too.
Did anyone had similar problem? Maybe I was hacked? please, help!!!!

Thank you for respond.
I don't even know what to think.
I have changed my password, just in case I protected my tweets.
By this moment I hav lost over 1300 followers, they never remove 1-2 followers, they remove like 100-200 followers per time.

I think that losing a bunch of followers at once is a bigger sign that it's a wave of Twitter cleaning out inactive accounts than it is an indicator of something you can address. After so long, the accounts are purged, but since they're not doing it every day, the amount to remove quickly builds up until the inactive accounts get dropped.

Twitter's infrequent purging of spam accounts can also cause the follower drops - I know I've been followed by a fairly even ratio of actual people to porn spammers/bots with suspicious links, so if you find that a good number of followers are non-entities with suspicious links, don't be too surprised to find them disappearing over the next several months.

Changing passwords is usually a good idea regardless, though. best of luck!

Twitter really is very random about their deleting old accounts too. I've read on some sites that twitter will delete your account if it's not been used for 6 months. Yet I have one person I follow, and he follows me, who hasn't been on his account in 915 days now. His account is still not deleted on twitter. I know there's been no activity, not even a sign on, because he died of cancer.

I guess I should take it as Twitter deleting old inactive accounts, I believe I have a lot since 2009.
I always was curious how come I have so many followers but getting such a little amount of likes, I guess it's coz many of them are inactive.

Have you tried using a site to see who unfollows you? It may shed some light on it. See which accounts unfollow you, then see if they are still active or deleted.

Also there have been a TON of bot accounts this year especially. I've been hearing many mention having a huge amount of them getting suspended every day.
