Call me a youngin in regards to mfc...but I keep reading stuff about the cake...fuck the cake...the cake is a lie.
And I'm not sure what it is??

It's from the game Portal. If you complete the tasks the person is asking of you he tells you there will be cake. As you go around you find signs/graffiti that the cake is a lie. It basically means that the awesome reward-the cake-is a lie. I'm sure someone could explain it better then that though because it's used for other references on the site. But pretty much the same thing lol.

Either way, at least you asked about it instead of just repeating it. I believe that at least half of the people who spout it out all the time have never beaten the short game.

Portal 2 should bring some new jokes though.

I believe there is cake in Portal 2 as well, but it too is a lie.

I had to Google it a long time ago too. The cake is a lie roughly translates to "your promised reward is merely a fictitious motivator". Popularized by the game "Portal" (found on Half-Life 2's "Orange Box" game release for PC, X-Box 360, and PS3). During the game, an electronic voice encourages you to solve intricate puzzles using cake as a motivating perk. When you have "broken out" of the game's initial testing phase (from threat of death), you find scrawls on walls of the innards of the testing center warning you that "the cake is a lie".
