I've been feeling so sad today after hearing this news, Terry Pratchett was someone I greatly admired and enjoyed and he will be missed SO very much.
It is tough because he has been so vocal about his condition and about death so we do have the benefit of his opinions on death. He was a huge supporter of assisted death and spoke of it often, in addition to presenting a documentary about it. It is still really hard to imagine a world without him, though.
I'm glad that he was with his family, with his cat asleep beside him. He has given the world so much to this world and I'm very grateful.
The final tweets from his account were kind of amazing, and had me bawling.
For those who don't know, Death (who is featured many times in his Discworld series) speaks in all caps and is really a pretty great fellow (who loves kittens). Regular folks can't really see him for what he is, however every wizard recognizes Death and knows that he will come for him personally. For some this is scary and for others it is not. He's really one of my favorite characters and it is nice for Terry Pratchett to leave us with the image of him going off with an old friend, as if in one of his stories. What a magnificent guy.
I was actually just re-reading "Mort", one of my favorite Discworld books, last week. It's actually centered on Death, so continuing with it feels appropriate and might be a nice way to say goodbye.

Seeing the change in his writing style was somewhat painful for me, and I hoped so badly he was just using a ghost writer. Knowing he is at peace instead of having his mind drift away until nothing was left of the man who taught me the importance of a sock with half a brick innit is much less painful for some reason.
