Hi Everyone! Ok ladies and gents I have a question about a new PC or Mac...

I've always cammed off my laptop but never been able to stream HD (I upgraded my upload speed and I have Logitech c920). I switch to my tower and its amazing (I can stream the best HD settings that MFC has to offer and the same on Chaturbate) but its an eye sore in the bedroom and it takes up loads of space which I don't have...

I'm going to go for an all-in-one but what specs to do I get?

My laptop was:
Intel Celeron
8gb and 2tg memory
Ethernet port 10/100

My Tower is:
Intel core i7
8gb and 1tg
Ethernet port 10/100/1000

I always stream using an Ethernet cable so is the reason I wasn't streaming HD before was because the Ethernet port in my laptop couldn't support the '1000'? Or does the Intel have a lot to do with it? I know the Celeron was designed for people who use their comps for general use not heavy use unlike the i7 which is designed for heavy business use which it gets...

Would I be ok getting a computer that has:

Intel core i5
8gb and 1tg
Ethernet port 10/100/1000 ? - An all in one with these specs are around £200 cheaper than the ones with the Intel core i7.

Or is a Mac more ideal ?

Sorry to mind boggle people's brains I'm just confused as to which to get lol. Ideally i'd like one with an Intel core i7 but they are around £700-1200...little bit expensive lol...

I don't want to throw water in your face, but you found something that works well, and you want to downgrade?

First off, you should be aware that a laptop/notebook with the same specs as a desktop (CPU/RAM HD) will not perform as well (read: fast) as the desktop, nor are they as reliable or sturdy. An all-in-one PC is just a glorified laptop. To gain portability and save space, sacrifices have to be made. Repairs and upgrades are also generally more expensive with a laptop/notebook/all-in-one.

There are *plenty* of camgirls who successfully cam with a laptop, and have for years. But it only takes one thing: a spilled soda, a shower show, bumping it off the desk, etc. and your out of business. If I had a nickle for every camgirl I have seen through the years that have had a distress sale or laptop fund to replace a broken machine...well, that would be a lot of tokens :p PC manufacturers do sell notebooks with beefed up specs, marketed as "desktop replacements". Same with all-in-ones. But they are pretty expensive.

My experience with notebooks is that for over 10 years I have been provided with one for work. And these weren't cheapos (primarily Thinkpads), and when I traveled I had a super-duper padded notebook bag or back pack. Not once was my work PC dropped or bumped off the desk or soda spilled on it. I had to have 4 replacements over the years because it just "died". And I am pretty sure you gals give your machines a better workout than I ever did.

So since you already have a desktop (tower) that works great, why change? Eyesore? I'm sure most members wouldn't be turned off by the sight of your tower, but I could be mistaken. Space? You must have a tiny room, lol. But say that's an issue. Have you thought about putting the tower in closet or moving it to the other side of the room (more out of sight)? You can cheaply get a wireless keyboard & mouse (30 foot range), usb (for cam) and monitor extension cables. Just my 2 cents.

PS, comparing a Celeron to an I7 is like comparing a MINI to a Jaguar ;)

but its an eye sore in the bedroom and it takes up loads of space which I don't have.

Do you primarily stay in the same room while camming, or do you move around the house to do cooking, bath, other shows?

If you stay in one room I'd definitely just keep using the desktop. Sounds like a pretty good rig there.

Definitely a good idea. Amazon has 10 foot USB extension cords in both 2.0 and 3.0 for under $7. They also have HDMI monitor cables for same price, or you can even get a 25 foot cable for $16. Basically for under $40 you would be able to shove your computer in a corner somewhere and have your webcam, monitor, keyboard, and mouse anywhere in the room you want.

I have another job outside of the cam world, for the past 5 years I have worked as an Image(photo) editor. So I use the likes of PS,LR,PSP. I got the Tower around 3 years ago for this work and it's always stayed in my office near my printers (I have various ones for different work). It's a lovely little set up for that job that I do.

Plus I sometimes have a client who wants to go through the editing process with me so they will sit at the side of me whist I edit. I can't really invite them to my bedroom lol. That's why I have an office...So at the moment if I have a client booked in it means having to re-set it all up in the office then back to the bedroom.....it's not a light Tower either and i'm rather on the clumsy side lol...

This is really interesting to know...if this is the case then I would be tempted to buy another tower and leave it in the bedroom...

The room is on the small side so I do have wireless all in one keyboard and mouse which helps loads....

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply, its really appreciated :) xx

I am not really an IT specialist, but could you run a cable from your office to your bed room ?
My thinking is about a small simple machine in the bed room connected to your tower who is doing the main stuff in your office...

But not sure if it is a good idea ..

Okay, just to answer your original question. An i5 would work fine.

I did find an i7 laptop with Win 10 and 8GB ram for £623.99 inc. vat (829.84 USD).

What's sad is we can get a similarly spec'd laptop in the US for £417.90 ($555.99 USD). So your vat tax is ridiculously high!

But just by going down to an i5 with the same amount of ram and hard drive space, it drops the price down to £379.98 inc. vat (505.41 USD). Massive drop.

For reasons that I don't understand we've always had to pay a premium here for electronics.

Our VAT rate is 20% so for the £623.99 one if you remove the VAT it's still £519.99 which is over £100 more than you would have to pay for the one in America.

I read somewhere once that the price difference was due to our plugs being different from everywhere else in the world but I don't buy that, even if fitting UK plugs added a few extra pounds there's no way that makes up for £100 difference.

Take it in again, Jerry explains it so well.

I live in a world of cheap plugs and it's just as bizarre to me.

Damn, five minute editing - went for better phrasing, got caught overworking the text.

Maybe you find this intereresting:

Why are we paying more?
So we are paying more, but why? In the past, when manufacturers have been accused of charging UK consumers more they have come up with a list of reasons; some believable, some more creative.

Higher VAT
Usually the blame is shifted to the government and our 20% VAT rate, but given the difference between the average 8.1% sales tax in California and our VAT rate is only just under 12% it doesn’t account for differences of up to 26%.

Cost of doing business
Retailers also claim that the cost of doing business in the UK is higher and that the increased cost of hiring staff, rent and other overheads is passed along in the price tag. One of the more solid answers is that the larger customer base in the US allows shops to buy the actual products in larger and thus cheaper quantities.

Funny plugs
One of the more novel reasons for the price hike is our plugs. Because manufacturers have to fit a specific UK plug to products destined for sale here it contributes to a higher price.

VAT aside most of the reasons above seem understandable, although I’d still struggle to see how the price of a special plug and the cost of renting a shop in Croydon contributes to a 26% difference in the price of a Macbook.

As mentioned above, your processor is a key difference between what you listed between PC and Laptop. Macbook Pro would be a better option but you could get a pc laptop with the same processing power for less than a macbookpro (at least 50% less). Another issue that no one brings up is the vid card. Desktops in general have far better video card than a laptop. A webcam will choke at at least one of three points, Vid card, bus or processor typically. It is far easier to upgrade a vid card in a pc than a laptop.

Alot depends on you, if you want a easy solution and understand what you need for software Macbook Pro may be the way to go, simple and easy. Yet way more expensive. I do not recommend Macbook Air. Then would come a mulitmedia platform laptop, and finally a PC tower geared toward video. For laptops and PC, you can search out equipment geared for gaming and get the components you need. Shop around, your local Costco, Sams Club, Office max and Best buy. May have exactly what you need for a great price. A slightly older model that they want to get off the shelf but may be well worth the price for your purpose.

Swoobie brings up a point that not many cammers think of unless they are heavy gamers or tech savvy. Some years ago I got a refurb I-5 that was pretty well loaded for its time. Graphics were fine and Id say comparable to most decent TV pictures. I decided to upgrade the box and double the memory, add another drive and swap out the vid card so I can run 3 monitors.
OMFG! The picture difference was astonishing. The ghosting that is present in many systems was totally eliminated. Moving water looked like moving water instead of a reasonable facsimile. The picture clarity was so sharp you could see individual eyelashes. That said, the card was almost $300 which was only $100 less than the original desktop. IMHO, for gaming its well worth it, camming too.
