I love tabletop games of all sorts, but I rarely get to play them. I have a friend who lives near Seattle who accumulates them, and on the rare occasions I see him, we always play something great that I haven't seen before. I do belong to a GURPS (RPG) group that meets fairly often. It's been going on forever. I think I've been in it about 20 years now, and I'm not even an original member of the group.
I used to play D&D in high school, starting with the booklets in the white box and then the "Advanced" (read, Gary wanted to make more money) version. I played a bit in college, but I haven't played since about the same time Jerry last did. A couple times, I was set to get involved in games run over the internet, but both times they never actually got started.
With some other friends, I have played Settlers of Catan a number of times. It's an excellent game, although it's not that special to me anymore because I got hold of a computer version and played it to death. I've also played Carcassonne, which is great, and I'd love to play it more. At one point, a few of us at work met in the office of a guy who had a nice collection of games and played. That was nice, but we only did it a few times, and several of us (including me) are no longer there.
I loved Stratego when I was a kid. Now my nephews demand that I play it with them whenever I see them. The youngest one beat me last time. I wasn't exactly straining to win, but I also wasn't intentionally giving him any breaks, so I was pretty proud of him.
I've heard of Munchkin from Wil Wheaton's Tabletop, but I've never seen it in person. Would love to try it.
When I was in high school, one friend of mine and I used to try to play the huge, complicated games with a billion pieces. We played a game called Quasar a few times, but since a turn took about 1-2 hours for each player, we never finished it, even the time I stayed overnight. I still have a few games like that, mostly from SPI (which probably doesn't exist anymore) that I've never played.
Also, I liked Kingmaker a lot, although it always seemed like you could prevent someone else from winning by taking an heir to Calais and squatting outside the city to avoid plagues.
If anyone is starting up some sort of online gaming group at any point, I'd be interested.
Thank you for reviving the thread, battle_kitten. I hadn't noticed it before, and I could talk about this stuff for hours. And apparently I did.
