None of us have played in years, derp. I really want to try Pathfinder too..

And I feel like the only person ever who doesnt like munchkin :shifty:

A DnD gamer who doesn't like Munchkin? I'd say you're a rare creature. Maybe break out the cards after settling into gaming a bit, and it might strike you as a bit more entertaining. Half the reason to play Munchkin is for all the inside jokes, after all.

I liked Munchkin but didn't love it, it is more of funny game, than a fun game.

Posted a few pics and tweets on my twitter of tonight's table top events. It's a messy Munchkin game!

Oh finally, people who agree that Munchkin can suck. There's that "one guy" in my gaming group who is amazing at every game. . . Especially Munchkin. He's also a jock frat boy who's loud and cheers himself on all the time. He makes Munchkin especially awful. :p He's pretty hot though. If he didn't Skype sex my sister (and if I wasn't married) ... oh wait. This thread's not about that.

Watching the Tabletop Day stream from earlier today and it's making me really wish I had a group of friends to play games with.
It's fun playing with my family, but there are a lot of games that I'd want to play that they wouldn't and then there's some that would just be about impossible to play with my dad for reason I won't get into here.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I figured that's better than making a new one of the same thing.

Some of my favorites: Munchkin (when we actually have a 3rd player :<) all of the DND adventure games, The Battle at Kemble's Cascade (AWESOME if you're into retro side scrollers, the art is even supposed to be 8bit, looks more like 16 though) King of New York, Relic, Tokadio, Space Hulk. Glad to see more Red Dragon inn players too!

The BF and are are massive tabletop nerds. Have friends over all day every sat (mostly for magic though, getting magic players to play new games is like pulling teeth) ...we have a collection problem <_<

Happy TableTop Day guys! Hope you're all getting to play awesome games with friends!

Why thank you lovely :)

I have been, my fiend just introduced me to Dropzone Commander. A nicely tactical game with stuff to paint that comes with pop up cardboard terrain. Most of my WHFB and WH 40 K friends are contemplating armies as it is so much more fun and balanced than WH games are.

I just got this Mage Knight game. it sure looks interesting, but, man, it has like 400 components, and now I am very scared. I'm not even exagerating... 200 cards, and like 200 cardboard chits. I'll get into it. Just like I'll eventually play that Shadowrun Crossfire game I have. yep. Except it is supposedly hard as hell. so also scares me. I am a weiner. Even the crazy Vietnam war game I got for Christmas is not nearly as intimidating as those 2, somehow.

I'd say that you are working on collection problem but have not quite arrived, but you are still young:D. Before moving to Hawaii my collection was about that large. I do have two friends that have a whole rooms worth of games one is bedroom, and the other is a 4 car garage that now only has room for 2 cars.

I love tabletop games of all sorts, but I rarely get to play them. I have a friend who lives near Seattle who accumulates them, and on the rare occasions I see him, we always play something great that I haven't seen before. I do belong to a GURPS (RPG) group that meets fairly often. It's been going on forever. I think I've been in it about 20 years now, and I'm not even an original member of the group.

I used to play D&D in high school, starting with the booklets in the white box and then the "Advanced" (read, Gary wanted to make more money) version. I played a bit in college, but I haven't played since about the same time Jerry last did. A couple times, I was set to get involved in games run over the internet, but both times they never actually got started. :(

With some other friends, I have played Settlers of Catan a number of times. It's an excellent game, although it's not that special to me anymore because I got hold of a computer version and played it to death. I've also played Carcassonne, which is great, and I'd love to play it more. At one point, a few of us at work met in the office of a guy who had a nice collection of games and played. That was nice, but we only did it a few times, and several of us (including me) are no longer there.

I loved Stratego when I was a kid. Now my nephews demand that I play it with them whenever I see them. The youngest one beat me last time. I wasn't exactly straining to win, but I also wasn't intentionally giving him any breaks, so I was pretty proud of him.

I've heard of Munchkin from Wil Wheaton's Tabletop, but I've never seen it in person. Would love to try it.

When I was in high school, one friend of mine and I used to try to play the huge, complicated games with a billion pieces. We played a game called Quasar a few times, but since a turn took about 1-2 hours for each player, we never finished it, even the time I stayed overnight. I still have a few games like that, mostly from SPI (which probably doesn't exist anymore) that I've never played.

Also, I liked Kingmaker a lot, although it always seemed like you could prevent someone else from winning by taking an heir to Calais and squatting outside the city to avoid plagues.

If anyone is starting up some sort of online gaming group at any point, I'd be interested.

Thank you for reviving the thread, battle_kitten. I hadn't noticed it before, and I could talk about this stuff for hours. And apparently I did.

I'll just leave that there...

I got a Dr Who Card Game over Christmas, and have yet to play it. It looks interesting, but I can't say, yet, as the only person I know who would probably play it with me lives 100 miles away, and is hardly up here. Well, and would, you know, know anything about Dr Who... which probably doesn't matter that much, but...

Hmm so if all goes as planned I will eventually move to Maui with a library of games too.

Also forgot to mention another gem for those of you with SNES nostalgia.

Awesome art, awesome game-play. Great fun if you enjoy screwing your friends over! Goal of the game: Build your own side scrolling dungeon and try to lure more heroes into your dungeon (and lead them to inevitable doom) then your opponents. I'm also a sucker for high quality and well thought out packaging. So the thick SNES style box was an automatic win. Just kicking myself for missing the kickstarter.

Also looking forward to this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/el ... ng-kittens

Yess, games to look for are firefly and fortune and glory both very fun moderately complex games with good online support. You can just download the rules as a PDF, so its a much more even playing field when you do finally get some people over to play it.

So I'm just gonna necro this thread. I just filled up my entire 5x5 Kallax... One of these things:

So I'm just gonna necro this thread.
Carcassonne Big Box
Carcassonne the Castle
Thurn & Taxis
Ticket to Ride

Whenever I go visit my brothers family we play a lot of board games. Mostly we like the Euro style board games which I notice a lot on your list. Carcassonne is a favorite. We have the big box too as well as splurging for all the other expansions. We use so many of them at the same time we tend to use a whole big dining table for that one when we play it.

Based on several of these that I play, and your love of Camel Up, have you ever played these two games?
Game of Thrones the board game.
Elfenland

Elfenland was another 'Spiel Des Jahres' game. Takes about an hour to play and is good pretty much all ages.

The game of thrones board game we started playing long before the show came out and none of us had read the books. So we didn't know what we were getting into. It's very detailed instructions and takes quite a while to finish. It takes several hours to finish and it's best if you have 4 to 6 people. The first time we played it we spent around 4 hours just getting the rules down. We ended up making a one page cheat sheet of the rules just so we could get the all the steps down. So be patient. But if you like strategy games it really is a good one.

There's also an expansion for the game of thrones called Storm of Swords, it's also pretty good.

ooh how did I not see this thread before?
Board games are pretty much my favourite thing in life but I rarely have anyone to play with. I bought Dominion and it sat on my shelf for 8+ months before I finally had a chance..

I think Carcassonne is my current favourite.
I'm really curious to try Power Grid! Has anyone played? I was also curious about Small World until I learned that it involves dice rolls- in general I kinda hate games that rely so much on chance (Monopoly is the worsttttttt). I think Settlers of Catan is fun of course but if you get shitty rolls it's awful. I feel like Small World might end up being like that too..?

I've played Power Grid. It's pretty fun. There is a lot of math involved, so it may be handy to have a few calculators ready at the table for people.

It's also got pretty good reviews too on Funagain. This guy on youtube shows a bit more of inside the box and how it's played if you want to see it.

He's showing other games in the vid, but Power Grid starts at that time frame.

I feel pretty much the same way about board games that rely on chance with dice rolls or wheel spinners. Once my family discovered the Euro games that rely more on strategy that's pretty much all we play anymore.

Has anyone played the card game, Exploding Kittens? I bought the original version last month, and it's a blast to play. The NSFW looks fun too if you're into whale boners, boob wizards, and penguin diarrhea. :giggle:

I will have to look into a Game of Thrones... I have to admit, as I was reading I first cringed when you mentioned it, thinking it was a game based off the show. I mostly hate franchised games.

I haven't played Elfenland either, so will have to check that one out!

@caireen Power Grid is a MUST HAVE. If it's usually 2-3 people playing, consider getting the robot expansion. :p The robot makes smaller games more fun!

And @JerryBoBerry WHAT?! Calculators?! What?!?!! You mean you don't just keep smaller denominations on hand and make little piles to set aside for each part of the round?! Hahahah! We use poker chips as money, so it's kind of easier to do it this way, and way more fun and challenging than using calculators!

Nothing is more "fun" than realizing when you're placing city markers that you bought too much trash and now you can power 12 cities, but can only place 10! Ughghgh! I feel like calculators would ruin it. It's not a lot of math, just simple addition and subtraction!

As far as Small World is concerned, the only time you use the dice is when you're making the last move of your turn (unless you have a race or special power that allows you to use it more). It's so you can make a final effort to take over a territory you don't have enough dudes for any way. I recommend this game and I also hate dice rolls. I should hate Galaxy Trucker because of the dice, but that one is just fun and doesn't sell itself as a strategy game.

Also, you should check out Terra Mystica. It is my favorite hardcore strategy game at the moment!

I was just looking and found a 3 minute tutorial. Geez I wish this had been made when we first started playing it! This gives you a pretty good idea of all the basic rules. What it does leave out is all the strategy you can use, even making alliances with other players. There's so many rounds of play, but at any time if a player has enough cities in his/her control they win. So my favorite is to try to pit other players into attacking each other when I am last to go in a round. Let them weaken their armies and move them away from places, then swoop in and get that last city I need to win the game early. The look of 'wtf just happened' when they think there's still several rounds to go as I win is awesome! (yes i get to be a competitive bastard when i play games)

As you'll see in the first few seconds, it's really a big board. Probably the largest of all the games we own.

So... what do you guys play in the real world, with dice and cards and boards??? :p

I have always had to play online, never in the real world. In February I am going to be on the JoCo Cruise though, and I hope to get up to lots of real world board game based antics for the first time since I was a small kid.
