Basically it would have the same potential downsides as an escort has. It's basically the same thing only with GFE or friendship thrown in to it. That is if you're taking the most common form of sugaring which is $$ in exchange for companionship and sex.

The ultimate problem with having a sugar daddy is the simple idea that you're using someone. Not based on principle, but this is problematic because one person can generally only give so much and this is where issues arise. Eventually, "taking care of someone" just isn't enough. Often times the relationship becomes more demanding physically or emotionally whether on purpose or accident.
Then there's the whole having a relationship but not really having a relationship with them. It can affect your life in areas that you wouldn't expect. Current relationships, friendships, even work. I've known a SD who demanded a girl to drop what she was doing and come to him at any moment. Typically, you set the rules and boundaries in the first chat with a potential SD so this may or may not be an issue.
Another major downside is that you may or may not even like the person you're exchanging services with. I think this is the worst part for me. I rather enjoy having sex with people I like and find attractive but some people can just shut it off.

There's definitely downsides, I think. Some more important than others
- There's a stigma attached to sugar babies that isn't overly flattering
- You're in large part financially dependent on another person who could stop giving you money at any time
- You'll be expected to interact sexually (to some degree) with someone who you won't really know, and may not find physically attractive
- The door's wide open for coercion ("I really need money for x" "I really want a blowjob" "I don't want to give you a blowjob" "If you want money for x badly enough, you know what to do")

Yes I have heard a lot of horror stories from sugar babies. From tumblr and other places. Guys who basically wanna pay bottom dollar for an hour of your "time" (meaning body) and think it's cool since you're not a professional escort so you should be fine with it, and it makes them feel better calling you a SB. To them not wanting you to have a bf and them be your only thing to live for daily but without commitment on their side in any way. To setting girls up in places to live then dropping the girl like a hot cake and she's homeless overnight. To the men just being overly disgusting men (don't shower/bathe, smell, disgusting habits or homes, etc) and expecting the girl to look like a playboy model and act in love with them or else. To guys demanding to not use condoms ever. To guys lording the money over the girls head at all times in an assholey way. To guys starting not to pay anymore since they feel you have moved past that point in the "relationship" (all in their own head of course.) The list goes on and on. Of course every girl has a right to decline any SD for any reason but these are the people you will have to wade through in order to find even a half decent one with a lil respect. And frankly the time it takes to find a good one would be so much even if I could get past sex with a stranger aspect it would not be worth the time.
