I used to do spider rescues in the dorms during high school and college.

Then, senior year of college, I got attacked by a cricket in the shower. Of course, with my glasses off, it took a bit before I realized that wasn't just a wad of hair tickling my foot. Now I have a fear of creepy-crawlies in general when I'm in bed or in the shower (the only two places I don't have glasses), and freak out a little when they come upon me unexpectedly in any other situation.

This was reinforced a couple months ago by finding a fly in my hair in the shower.

I too get that "what if there's a spider there?" fear when using the restroom, so much so that I can't go without being able to see the toilet (lights and glasses must be on!)

Those 1000 leggers are fast little buggers too. I lol'd when the two girls were trying to swat it with a garden shovel. The two spiders that freak me out are the Brazilian spider that can give a guy the most painful hard on for hours and this guy who has fangs an inch long and eats birds...

I think one of the most common misconceptions that people who are NOT afraid of spiders have about people who ARE afraid of spiders is why we are afraid... the fear isn't just about being bitten, or the poisonous ones... it's about the creature in GENERAL. I don't want one in the same room as me, I don't want to see one, as just the sight of them gives me a panic attack. I know the only danger from them is their bite, but it goes deeper than just fearing being bitten.

I know there are many more dangerous things in my environment than a spider, but nothing sends me into a panic like one.

So all of these anecdotes about how we are more of a threat to them than they are to us, and how our dogs are scarier than spiders due to it being more likely to get bit by them really are missing the point.

Now BEES on the other hand, I find fascinating. The ONLY thing I am scared about with bees IS their sting. Quite the opposite of my spider hate, lol.

That is why its called a phobia. I know a girl who has a phobia about peach fur, which makes me feel a lot better about my spider phobia.

Nah, the spiders are fine, its the snakes and the wasps you really need to worry about, and the jellyfish, and the crocodiles, and the poisonous octopi, and the stonefish, and the sharks of course, and a couple people have been killed by Cassowarys - which is a kind of emu - other than that it fine. What could possibly go wrong?

Nah, you will be fine! Stick to the cities and the marked beaches and the only worry will be spiders jellyfish and sharks. The jellyfish almost never kill anybody - but it will it hurt so much you wish you were dead. We only have 2 potentially lethal spiders - and another one that makes your limbs rot off - so you will have practically no chance of dying from spider bites, and the couple weeks in hospital recovering will seem like a holiday. If however you get bitten by a shark, you're pretty much fucked.

I get it. It's one of the most primal fears in humanity. While I love and am fascinated by spiders, I admit, when they're unexpected, they can play with my head. I used to work on motorcycles and I remember one day I popped a cover off of a bike that had been sitting up for a while and discovered cobwebs all over the thing, I don't remember if there was a live spider or not, but the whole time I was tearing it apart I could swear I felt on crawling on me. Another time I was lying on the floor to look under something and as it was summer and the floor was cool, I just laid back for a second. Then I turned my head and saw this eight legged monster stomping toward me at a high rate of speed. I'm not sure I've jumped up so fast. I laughed once I saw his actual size.
But then I played with a rose-hair tarantula as part of BDSM demo. The wife wouldn't let me keep it (her, we think), despite my protests that it was a fuzzy, cuddly thing, just like the rabbits.

I miss that thing.

Ive recently moved to Arizona, only to discover these guys:

Giant crab spiders :crybaby:

Spiders really gross me out.... This would really help curb my coffee addiction:

^THIS^

I really don't wanna hear "Oh, stop being a baby...you're so much bigger than a thousand-legger!" Dude, I DON'T CARE...lol. I don't want it on me or near me. You don't see me making fun of people who are afraid of clowns.

I can completely understand the fear of thousand leggers, but you know they aren't spiders, right?

Yeah, I know.

I hate centipedes too.

I won't scream if a little ant is on my arm though. :)

Why do I keep looking? I have enough spider problems right now.

Oh well JJ, Be glad you don't have them like I did one summer. Parked my Jeep under a nice big oak tree and left it open. Forgot to close it up that night. Next day, I found the spideys had decided they liked it for a diner and has set up their kitchen inside that night. For the next almost 2 months I kept finding evidence there were still some inside. IDK where, maybe under the dash or even under the seats, never really saw them but the leftovers were fresh every morning... :?
mostly hard shells but there were a couple of small banana spiders too that had commandeered the roll bar supports....

I would gladly trade that for my current basement/camroom invasion.

BTW.. to get rid of them, spraying Raid or such doesn't do much to them unless you hit them directly. With the pesticide residue left that does kill roaches and other bugs, spiders points of contact are so small they they just walk right over it and they will abandon a web that's been contaminated. Hairspray and a bic lighter works well tho....
