A library in Scotland has hit upon a novel way of boosting attendance: pole dancing.
The Mayfield Library in Dalkeith, Scotland, erected a stripper pole over the weekend and treated residents to free exercise classes as part of “Love Your Library Day,” STV reported.
“The pole fitness session is a fun and interesting way of encouraging more people into our libraries, trying out all the services on offer and ultimately borrowing more books,” Midlothian Council member Bob Constable said.
Clad in black shorts and a red tank top, Nikki Clark, a pole dancing expert, showed off her moves before inviting onlookers to give the stripper pastime a try.
Library officials said they were thrilled at the turn out in Dalkeith, a tiny town with just under 12,000 residents.
“It’s a day of excitement and engagement and bringing the community into a library, which people who have never been into a library before will see so much happening,” Constable said.
Other featured activities on Saturday included ping-pong, Scottish country dancing and head massages, STV reported.
Still, for all the gyrating, spinning, and general merriment, there was no word on how many people at the event actually checked out a book from the library.
