Alright, I'm new to the gaming world (I mean...unless you count having NES/SNES as gaming haha :() and I have absolutely no idea what system to get! I figured I'd ask everyone for pros and cons of each to help me better decide!

The system with the more pros will be getting purchased
HELP ME OUT, GENTLEMEN AND GENTLEWOMEN!
:p

I'm still stuck with last gen consoles but I'll be getting a PS4 as soon as I can afford one and avoiding X-Box this time around. Mainly due to the way Microsoft went about introducing the console, lying to their customers and being general poo poo heads. When they first announced it, it was going to require you to pay Microsoft a fee to play games you'd bought pre-owned, or even games you were borrowing. Naturally, people shit the bed and cried foul and Microsoft replied that reversing their digital rights policy wasn't as easy as "flicking a switch". Eventually, enough people complained that they relented and flicked that switch. Then there's the fact that Kinect comes built into the console. This has two drawbacks - 1. not everybody wants Kinect (some won't use it and there are security issues with the camera always being on with no way to switch it off) and 2. it means that the console is more expensive than PS4. People complained, Microsoft said if you want an X-Box One you'll have to buy it with Kinect because they will never ever ever sell it without Kinect. Then they announced they were going to sell it without Kinect. So yeah, fuck Microsoft.

Pros and cons for each console as they stand...

PROS

PS4 -
More powerful console, capable of better graphics
Better exclusive games (IMO)
Cheaper
When you join PlayStation Plus (which you have to in order to play games online) you receive two free games a month
If you have a Vita, you can use it as a second screen for your PS4

X-Box One -
Has Kinect, if you enjoy that kind of thing
You can watch TV through it, while accessing various special features while you do it
Has voice control

CONS

PS4 -
Have to pay extra if you want to watch TV through it (excluding streaming services like Netflix, which will work with no need for any extra hardware)
Camera isn't as advanced as Kinect
Online gaming now requires a PS Plus subscription (it never used to)

X-Box One -
Weaker exclusive games (IMO)
Less powerful than PS4
Online play/streaming TV services etc. require X-Box Gold subscription which costs more than PS Plus and (as far as I know) doesn't come with monthly free games
Kinect doesn't switch off, which is a security concern for many
More expensive than PS4
Requires constant internet connection, even if you're not playing games online

All that said, if you're new to gaming, I'd just get a PS3....

Huge library of great games to choose from
Most games are very cheap now, especially pre-owned
Console can be picked up cheaply
Free to play online
If you subscribe to PS Plus, you get about 4 free games every month

SO helpful! I've never been a Microsoft girl due to their seediness and this totally put the cherry on top of the nasty cake that I already thought was quite gross XD

Thank you :D !! I'll be getting a ps3!

Xbox Gold actually offers two free games a month now as well! And you don't need a paid membership to use streaming services like Netflix anymore.

But if I were getting a new console, I'd get a PS3 as well. I have a 360 and love it but Playstation has some great exclusives that I wish I could play.

If you're planning to game with friends online, I'd survey your friends to see what they have though so you can play together!

I know this is no option but i LOVE my Wii !! I can download all the old school games I LOVE :) and me and my bf have spent countless hours playing super mario world instead of camming lol. I also love to play Just Dance and its a great work out and they recently started adding more systems and games! I can play Ocarina of time without getting my N64 out its amazing. Also I would like to add i have a ps3 and an x box 360 and don't use/play either of them. I sold my xbox to my neighbor and gave my brother my ps3. I just love my Wii to much I guess.

I'm still playing Xbox 360. The games are really cheap now if you don't buy in retail stores. Digital download sales, Ebay, & used from Amazon are how I get all my games.

I don't think any of the new console games yet are worth paying the new premium price for. Many of them are designed so they can release a version still on the older consoles.

If the choice was between a 360 and PS3, I'd go with a 360. PS3 exclusives are mostly terrible and multi platform games mostly ran like crap and looked worse on the PS3. The "free" games you get with PS+ aren't really free, kinda renting them. You get to keep and play the free 360 games even if your subscription runs out. Plus, X-Box exclusives are amazing imo. You won't be playing Gears, Titanfall(maybe the sequel), or even Halo on a Playstation.

If it was between a One or a PS4? I'd go with a One but only because the PS4 doesn't really have anything worth playing yet. Gold costs the same as PS+ and you get free games but similar to PS+, you're only renting them. Kinect doesn't come built in, you don't even need it. You can buy a Kinectless One now. Doesn't require a constant internet connection.

If you do grab a PS3, I gotta reccomend The Last of Us and The Infamous games.

If you grab a 360, I gotta reccommend the Gears of War games, Halos, Titanfall, Trials HD and Evolution, State of Decay, Alan Wake games, Crackdown games, Left 4 Dead games, original Dead Rising, Forza Horizon, and would reccomend playing games that are multi plat on the 360.

Have fun with whatever you choose just make sure you know the facts of each system.

Can't go wrong with any system really, just be aware that Bob's list of pros and cons is mostly inaccurate or outdated information. No offence Bob.

:character-megaman: Damnit, Bob!

My bad. I didn't realise they'd changed the Gold stuff re: free games and not needing it for streaming Netflix. I think the rest of the stuff listed still stands though (save for maybe needing an internet connection for X-Box One, which it sounds like they may have changed).

As far as 360 vs PS3 exclusives go, I'd definitely argue PS3 has the best exclusives. I have both consoles and really only fire up the 360 for Gears of War and Halo. PS3 meanwhile has the Last of Us and Uncharted (which Punk already mentioned), as well as the God of War series, the Little Big Planet series, Metal Gear Solid 5, the Gran Turismo series, Heavenly Sword, Heavy Rain, the Killzone games, the Infamous games, Motorstorm, the Ratchet & Clank games, etc. etc.

Plus, the PS3 plays Blu-Rays, whereas the 360 doesn't.

Alright, alright gentlemen. I think I've decided and put PS3 on my wish list so I can remember what to buy!

Heavenly Sword, Heavy Rain, the Killzone games,
lol I kinda forgot how awful Playstation exclusives were at first, I'd avoid these games. Gran Turismo is dope but I remember reading that they shutdown the servers to the older games when the new one comes out, so make sure to get the new one if you want to play online. Servers for Motorstorm are probably down too, another awesome game. Meanwhile I can still play Gears 1 or Halo 3 or Forza 3 online. I can't stand when online features get removed from games but not the thread to be bitching about that I guess.

I'd defend Killzone and Heavenly Sword to the death. Okay, that's a lie. But I do think Killzone 3 is a great FPS and Heavenly Sword (while maybe a little dated graphically) is a lot of fun, especially if you enjoy cutting down literally hundreds of enemies at once. Good story and a great female lead too. And I really dug Heavy Rain, even if it is more "interactive movie" than video game :twocents-02cents:

I wanted to like all three but just couldn't.

360 exclusives are just so much better than PS3's imo. Communities are bigger, communities don't always die after a month, servers are still running, and I love the games. PS3 still gets some use but mostly as a Netflix and WWE network player. Last game I bought was The Last of Us. Most people I game with play on the 360 or One. People on my Playstation friendslist mostly play single player games I noticed. I also don't like how quiet people on PS3 are. Nobody ever has a mic, shit is needed if you're playing competitive team games. Really wanted to like Playstations Smash bros clone but was disappointed with it. Loved the PS2 and didn't care too much for the og xbox, but the 360 just had such a better library than PS3 that I started to lean more towards Microsoft. PS4 having nothing worth getting yet and XBone having a bunch of games I love already out makes it hard to want a PS4. Will get one once they announce a exclusive I'm interested in.

If you're going to have the PS+ subscription long-term with the PS3, make sure you get a PS3 with a lot of hard drive space. Many game downloads from Playstation seem to take up an excessive amount of hard drive space. I had to upgrade the hard drive with my Xbox 360, and the game downloads are smaller.

Even though the decision has been made, I felt compelled to post about my bias towards Xbox. I went from Xbox to 360 to One, and I've enjoyed gaming on all three. I had a blast playing my friend's PS1 and 2 a bit, but I never really liked the PS3. I developed a love for a lot of the exclusive franchises for Xbox (Halo, Gears, Forza, etc.), and I tend to like the controller layout for Xbox better.

I'll agree Bob's list is pretty outdated for the cons on the Xbox One. However, Microsoft's initial reveal and plans are what a lot of people still think is true, which hurts the One-- you know what they say about first impressions, after all. I think most of that, though, can be attributed to the former head of Xbox who has left to become the CEO of Zynga, I think. He seemed to be the one pushing a lot of that stuff that was much more publisher friendly (the used game fee, etc.) and the constant (semi-- once per 24 hour check) online connection. Ever since Phil Spencer took over, things have gotten better on the One's development side, including the push for more indy games.

When it comes to talking about power, we have to remember, the most powerful system has never been the most popular/best selling. The PS2 was the least powerful of the PS2/Xbox/GameCube generation, yet was the best selling. The Wii was the least powerful of the PS3/360/Wii generation, but was the best seller. Power, alone isn't what sells the consoles.

Sony's messaging was just far better this time around. Microsoft pretty much fell into the same trap that Sony fell into with the launch of the PS3. Remember Kurtaragi saying the PS3 was so good it needed to be $600 and if you wanted one then maybe you needed a second job? And remember how the PS3Gimp version was still $500 at launch? Yeah. Hubris. After the 360 was popular, Microsoft got that same hubris. Oh and I was 6th row at the E3 press conference when Sony announced the price of the PS3, and I can tell you, no game journalist was excited to hear the $500/$600 price point.

The price for a Kinect-less One is the same as a PS4 with no camera. However, the Kienct version is still more expensive than a PS4 with the camera by $40. But the PlayStation camera isn't as useful as the Kinect from what I know. But, I will say, without a Kinect, the Xbox One's OS is extremely clunky to navigate. A friend of mine just got a Kinect-less One and was asking me how to unsnap the party while we played the Destiny Beta... without the Kinect, it's harder than it needs to be.

Exclusives are subjective. I only turn my PS3 on, really, for the exclusives, since multiplatform games looked better and generally ran better on the 360. Plus I despise the PS3 controller for anything besides fighting games (while the 360's controller was great for most games and sucked for fighting games). Truthfully, the exclusives were the only reason to own a PS3 for me. And first party exclusives at that, since they were the only games that didn't look like ass on the PS3. The Last of Us, especially, showed what the PS3 was capable of, provided a studio could learn to properly code for it.

Ironically, though, the biggest strength of the 360, the party system, has become completely FUBARed on the One. I don't know what MS was thinking, but especially at launch, the party system was near useless. It's gotten better since launch with updates, but it is still wonky when it shouldn't be. If there was one thing they needed to not fuck up, it was the party system... and they fucked it up.

My honest opinion, though, is that MS got taken by surprise by Sony saying they were launching last year. The One was simply NOT ready to launch. They probably figured they had another year to get all the kinks out, but then decided they couldn't launch a year after Sony and launched the One in what could very easily be considered an early beta stage. A lot of things were missing. External HDD support, Twitch streaming, etc. Some of it has been added, but not all. So, we could say that the One is still in a beta stage as far as the OS goes.

If you can find a backwards compatible PS3 which will let you play PS2 and original Playstation games I would go for one of those models. You can also upgrade the hard drive on the PS3 as well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-Ps3-Playst ... 3392f9f80c

I would like to say before I start my choice between the two, I am heavily biased due to one companies choices during their announcement. Does that make it fair on my part? No. But I will list technical aspects as well. :) You have every right to tell me I'm wrong about those, but certain things I will not budge on :D

I personally would pick the PS4. I've had a PS1, PS2, and a PS3. But I would like to point out that I got a 360 before I got a PS3. During the time of the announcement of the XB1 and PS4, I noticed that Sony and Microsoft handled things VERY differently. I didn't appreciate that Microsoft let it be known originally that I was not their targeted demographic, and thus they could give two shits about me. It left a super sour taste in my mouth, and made me not want to even buy their products.
The announcements that made it bad for me were:
-No used games. (Changed since release). I'm in no means rich. Which means I don't have the $65 to shell out for every new game. (that's how much a new game in my state/city costs). I also have worked for two game stores that had a preowned policy, and could see the many merits in it. This really made me uncomfortable because if I couldn't try the game out either via Gamefly or preowned/borrowed, I didn't want to risk shelling out that much money.
-Constant connection to the internet (Changed) What? Seriously? This upset me because of my area. Not all houses have internet believe it or not. I know that sounds odd in our day and age, but there's a huge gap between "middle" and "lower" class. I've seen families scrape together money for years to get their kids a game console. I can't tell you how many broken hearts I saw because some jackass sold a family without internet a PSP Go. (I would take the returns because I was so angry that the cashier didn't ask them.) I know it has since changed, but that still really upset me that Microsoft would assume something.
-Kinect always on. (Changed?) Excuse me, but I like to game naked sometimes. Why? Because being naked is comfy dammit.

So with those things in mind, I was really, REALLY uncomfortable with Microsoft. Has things changed since first announced? Yes. Do I feel better? Not really. It left a sour feel in my mouth.

BUT: I will get to technical aspects.

Pros to XBoxOne:
-Great multimedia system.
-A few great exclusives (e.g. Fable, Gears of War, Halo). NOTE: I SAY GREAT NOT IN PERSONAL OPINION. (I go by sales and popularity)
-Better Online community
-History of less hacking
Cons:
-Less powerful
-Kinect. Kinect. Kinect.
-$$$$$ Online Community,
-Cheaper made controllers/accessories

Pros to PS4:
-Faster speeds
-Great exclusives! (e.g. God of War, Katamari*, PS Store exclusives like the Final Fantasy series and more, Killzone, inFamous**). *This one is my personal opinion because KATAMARI IS AMAZING. **Yeah. This was awesome.
-Choice between free or paid internet. Paid gets better perks, BUT, you can still have free community

Cons to PS4:
-Lack of multimedia system seen in previous system
-History of having hacked servers
-Really wants you to have a PS Vita to connect.
-Touch Screen. (This one is a personal preference. I don't need a damn touch screen for everything).

:D I am no console fangirl by any means. Or at least if I was one it would be with mostly Nintendo or PC. I personally will be purchasing a PS4 myself when it comes out.
A few of the Xbox exclusives do not entice me as much as the PS4 ones do, but like I said previously, for me it was just how Microsoft came out of the gate. I'm super glad I don't work in game stores anymore, because I feel like now I can just go "Eh, for me I like X because of X".
My recommendation is either finding someone whom has either or system and play on it and see what you like!
Also and this one is huge:
Read up on some games you like. Find out if they're going to be exclusives. If they are, would it be worth to spend the $$$ to get the system? Do you like the pros and can handle the cons of the system. Everyone's pros and cons will be different to each person.
I always had a rule when I worked at the game stores. I never said one system was inherently better than the other. Which, is true.
Good luck in your choice and I hope this helps!!

Now I'm gonna go sit and pout because I want a PS4 to get Batman when it comes out.

Edit: I saw the thing about the PS3.
WARNING: If you get a 60 GB PS3 with the 4 USB ports, Be mindful that a high % of those have faulty heat absorbers in the motherboard. They can fall prey to similar issues like the 360. (On the PS3, it is called the "Yellow Light".) I would recommend looking for an 80 gb with the 4 USB ports. They will be 88% backwards compatible, HOWEVER, Unless you're looking for super duper rare OBSCURE games, then I wouldn't worry.
(DO NOT GET A 20 GB PS3!!! It does NOT have wireless internet).
:D Good luck! I would recommend checking your local Gamestop for refurb ones. You get a free 30 day from them. (They just may be hard to find)

Naw, gotta pay to play online with the PS4 just like with the 360/One. The meltdowns from the Sony Defense Force when this was announced were legendary.

Been out for a while now. Still nothing worth playing yet(opinion) besides Infamous but they did announce that Kojima is working on the new Silent Hill which is either exclusive to Playstation or a timed exclusive.

Yes, but most of the Katamari games have been Sony only. And the 360 one isn't nearly as good as We Love Katamari or Katamari Forever. :D

That was a misput on my part. It was very late. I meant to say when I can afford one, not when it came out.

To me, that is still a valid approach - the way that Microsoft handled the Xbox One launch showed how out of touch they were with their audience and, unsurprisingly, led to the head of the Xbox division leaving the company and going to Zynga. It's a similar issue to what they had with Windows 8 and other Microsoft products (which led to Ballmer stepping down, restructuring of all of Microsoft...). Do they have a chance to recover now that they are cleaning up their house? Maybe. But in terms of numbers of sales for this new generation, Sony already has a better foothold and hence a bigger leverage in the negotiation table when discussing exclusives.

I try to always keep an open mind with gaming companies, but they really made it clear at the beginning that Microsoft does not see me as a customer. Not because of my gender, but because of my gaming choices and income.

Sony did the same at the start of the PS3, with it's $600 price tag (and $500 for the PS3Gimp version that didn't have all the features). Plus Kaz's comments about earning that PS3...

http://www.joystiq.com/2005/07/06/sony- ... station-3/

It wasn't until the PS3 was getting its ass handed to it by the 360 and the Wii that Sony changed how they look at things with regards to price and attitude towards customers.

I love my PS3, even when the network was down for, what seemed like, ever. I had an original Xbox, it was really good, but if I'm already paying for internet, I don't really see the point in paying to play online (even if it is a measly $60 or so a year)
