I got my mom a PS3 as an early Christmas present and apparently it's too difficult for her. She can't even get past the ghosts on Little Big Planet.
So what are some games that old people [or three year olds] can play?
She's 57 and my aunt that lives with us is 60.
I already got them Wheel of Fortune.

I'm trying to basically get her to teach herself how to use the controller comfortably do she can play things like God of War and Assassin's Creed and stuff like that.

My 4 year old started playing our PS3 at 3 - he is good at anything Lego....you basically can't screw those up. He also likes the Sly Cooper games, but those may be a bit more advanced.

LittleBigPlanet does have somewhat sketchy controls. The floaty jump and the weird auto-switching between the three planes. And some pretty bad collision detection, too. I'm not surprised that someone not accustomed to games would have some trouble with it.

Here are a few ideas off the top of my head, roughly in order of difficulty. Many of them my mom has played, or expressed interest in playing.
  • Flower — It uses only motion controls to steer and one button to accelerate (almost any button works). And aside from the last few levels it puts little pressure on the player. You can just float around and have fun.
  • Costume Quest — simple RPG. My mom loved it.
  • Journey — Simple but rewarding. One of the best games of the past few years but very accessible.
  • Mini Ninjas — fun and not too hard
  • Ni no Kuni — Very pretty, decent story, relatively easy.
  • L.A. Noire — It's a “real” game but even when you fail at things it will let you progress through it anyway if you set it to the easy difficulty. (Note: Not for 3-year-olds. It's rated M for good reasons.)
  • Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction — The first of the series to appear on the PS3, it's a good starting point for this series.

See, as far as *real games* go, I had only thought of Heavy Rain. But she would probably find a way to fuck that up too. =P
Thank you for the Costume Quest suggestion though, I forgot about that.
I love that game! ^___^
Plus we were only thinking about physical games. We haven't even checked the Playstation Store yet.

I wonder if she would be able to play Stacking or Naughty Bear...

You can't go wrong with Tetris... imho. :-D

A lot of my older friends (late 50s & early 60s) seem to like playing Rock Band and Guitar Hero. ;)

Ni no Kuni? for a beginner? Nah... that is a Level 5 grindfest RPG (what they are known for, really).Sure, it's Ghibli, and cute, but that is not a starter game at all.

And for something useful... there was a Trivial Pursuit game for 360, surely it was on PS3, too. It was actually pretty fun. Especially the faster modes. Though, I'm not sure it had a single player mode at all, now I think about it.

Def. agree with Costume Quest (and basically any other Double Fine game, incl. Stacking (which is AMAZING btw)), Journey, Flower, and the Guitar Hero games! Ni No Kuni is fun and cutesy but HECKA frustrating unless you do lots of grindng. Possibly not fun for moms.

The LEGO games are good bet - they're easy to pick up, super fun to play, have good replay value, and they have all the different franchises too! Does she like Harry Potter? Comics? LotR?

The Rayman games (Origins and Legends) are super fun platformers too! Lots of pretty music too.

Not sure if these are on PS3 or the network but also check out Braid and FEZ. She might enjoy simple puzzle games like that too. :)

Old people? There's a woman over 70 in my guild who's an MMO guild leader. You'd be better off asking about games for people who aren't really good at video games.

My mom must just be weird. She loves grinding in JRPGs. She was always at ridiculously high levels when she played DQ8.

Braid is on PSN. Fez isn't yet. (It's supposed to be coming to PS3/PS4/Vita sometime this year though.)

I am a person who has a fundamental inability to play anything on PS3. I always got really confused with all the controls and would get super lost in any kind of 3D open world (I'm not OLD old but I grew up playing super nintendo)

I recently tried to play LEGO Lord of the rings on PS3 and it only took me about 5 minutes to learn it, now I am SUPER addicted. They are funny and easy and you can't really die or get lost. Highly entertaining and good. To be fair, part of the appeal of this game to me is that I love LOTR anything but there are lots of games in the LEGO franchise, so choose one that might be relevant to her interests.

Also, I can't beat the ghosts on Little Big Planet.
