I just noticed that Turner Classics Movies is having a Political Theme night tonight (Friday in the US). While this genre (or black & white movies, lol) may not be your cup of tea, they are all worth a look...especially right now.
Advise & Consent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advise_%26_Consent_(film)
This concerns events surrounding a newly appointed secretary of state's confirmation hearings. It has it all: hidden pasts, lies, blackmail, back-room deals...everything. This movie is 50 years old, but it is very relevant today. Henry Fonda leads a very good cast. Look and you will see a young Betty White.
Next up is All the President's Men (in color
) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_the_Pr ... _Men_(film)
This is of course about the Watergate scandal. It should serve as a lesson to all of us about the perils of unchecked power. Redford and Hoffman lead a great cast in a very good telling of a story that we should all know by heart.
Lastly, we have Seven Days in May http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Days_in_May
Holy crap! A General's aide accidentally discovers a conspiracy in the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Kirk Douglass and Burt Lancaster were at the height of their powers. The technology is dated (payphones, etc.), but the story is riveting. JFK reputedly read the novel and believed the scenario as described could actually occur in the United States.
So, if you are tired of movies with too many special effects...get the popcorn out, but be ready to grip the edge of your seat
