How about audio horror? It's lately very under explored. Horror was almost mainstream with radio dramas of old. Along with Suspense, and several of the Mercury Theater productions, CBS Radio Mystery Theater kept it up till the 70s.
My nomination for listening is the BBC adaptation of "I Am Legend" performed by Angus McInnes. It's truly excellent, faithful to the book and oh so good on a dark night.
Of course if you want to go 1938 style, queue up War of the Worlds at 9pm Eastern.
Definitely it counts! I'm a big fan of radio plays. I'm pretty stoked that the art form has seen a revival with podcasts and even Youtube. I've been watching Night Mind's newest posts this week on Youtube, and pretty much all he's been doing for Halloween has been telling stories about monsters and ghosts. It's not at the same level as more dramatic stuff found on OTR or even stuff like Welcome to Night Vale, but it's been great to have on while I work. He has a very good voice.
