Oh gosh. I am so excited this thread exists.
I honestly went into the movie, prepared to think the way your fella does. I am obsessed with the older Mad Max movies, so when I heard they were remaking it, my heart dropped and I grumbled like an old man. Buuuut, I still had to see it. And I was blown away. There were some inconsistencies compared to the original trilogy, but over all, I felt like it did an amazing job of capturing the spirit of the world of Mad Max.
It was nothing like the original Mad Max, which is okay, because the first movie barely feels a part of the story. It's more of a Dystopian future, the beginnings of the decline, and too close to the real world, in my opinion. I'm not a super fan of the original. But bring in Road Warrior and Thunder Dome, and you've got a truly post-apocalyptic world of desert and wildness and pure ferocity. And Fury Road really keeps to that spirit, with everything from the vehicle aesthetics from Road Warrior to the wild children (Feral Kid, Waiting Ones, and now the War Boys). Heck, the man who played Immortan Joe was also Toe Cutter from the original Mad Max! How cool is that?!
Your fella was disappointed that the story didn't revolve as much around Max... But the same can be said about the others (except Mad Max). The movies had Max as a main character, but I always ended up remembering the people that Max helped. That's what the stories were about - not delving as much into the whys and reasons of who Max was, but watching him help others in a world where everyone else just looked out for themselves in order to survive. The secondary characters were always so vivid to me - the Gyro Captain, Master Blaster, the Waiting Ones, Lord Humungus, the Feral Kid - so watching Max step in to help Furiosa and the Wives felt exactly in keeping with the spirit of the films! That's what Max does!
I am so glad George Miller came back to bring his brainchild back to life. He did take elements from the other movies - the best ones, in my opinion, and I am glad he did, or it wouldn't have felt like a part of the Mad Mad universe. Plus, they added some awesome and unique elements that belong to Fury Road alone - the Warboys and the culture of the Citadel, the tribe of Vuvalini, the Doof Warrior!!
When I left the movie theater after watching Fury Road, I was more in love with the world of Mad Max than ever before! And to me, that's a sign of success! I can't wait to see the others!
